    This has feng shui (specifically Wu Xing) involved,. In the application of the the elements vis a vis a human personality, one has to conclude that we will meet people in our lives and some will be more active and fighter spirit, some more laid back, others more emotional, some talkative, others less and yet others practical, cold (or calculating). The next stage would be to find a way to know other's people's intentions without having them speak their minds. Aforeknowledge if you will.

    Value depends on context, one thing may be valuable in one context in another, and often it's the case that the only value something has is merely imposed on the object by the mind of the observer, and that person was conditioned to believe that that certain something has value, when in reality the value is not there, it is merely be created within the mind of the individual(the observer).

      The goal of philosophy is to abstract from those particular instances to find out what makes those things valuable in some situations and not in others. In virtue of what is a particular object valuable? If it is not valuable in all situations, then it is not the object itself which is valuable, but some property which can make particular objects valuable and others not.
      Note that we are also asking about objective value, something being valuable regardless of what people believe about it. For example, many people would claim that a human life has value even if no one (even that person ) believes that it does.

      There once was a man who told the government it did not exist, and therefore neither did its tax system. He told them it was something like a value that was not really there -- it was simply imposed on him by people who were conditioned to believe in the existence of governments... That man is now doing real time in a real prison.

    Values depend on the fullfilment of properties that define a concept: "Something is good inasmuch it fullfils the meaning of its concept" - Robert S. Hartman, Scientific Axiology: Vx = 2n - 1 (n is a power, and it represents the number of properties)

      This video made me think of the tulip bubble as reported on by Michael Pollan in "The Botany of Desire". I think what we perceive to have value can be tricky. For example:
      Yachts have more value than toilet paper. However, of the 10 people on Forbes top ten richest people in America, ZERO people are yacht manufacturers, but 3 of them make or sell toilet paper; so it would seem that. measurably, toilet paper is more valuable than yachts.
      I think about this stuff all the time.

      In one sense, those would fall under Value Theory, then Political Philosophy since they are theories about political systems. In another sense they would fall under the theory of value, since they provide the necessary and sufficient conditions for something having value (number of hours to create etc). However, it is important to note that in philosophy we are talking about categorical value (good in itself) not necessarily hypothetical value (good for something) (ua-cam.com/video/Zb88tiIG0tY/v-deo.html). So if you are only talking about value in the sense of how much something costs, your argument belongs in political philosophy, but if you are talking about value for itself, then you will be at home in Theory of Value.

    I would think it is uncontroversial to say that nothing has intrinsic value, and that valuing is a function of a mind. So, value is something that is externally imposed, and subsequently, tending to be perpetually in flux.

    • @CarneadesOfCyrene
      @CarneadesOfCyrene  7 років тому +6

      While it seems to me that one might argue for such a position, it seems anything but uncontroversial. It seems to me that there are many people in the world that believe that there are some things that are objectively good and objectively bad. You might argue that a robot that wanders around torturing and raping people is not something which is inherently bad, or intrinsically lacks value, but I would say that there are many people that would claim that such a device is objectively bad, or objectively lacks value. I'm not saying they are correct, I'm saying it is a controversial claim.

      It is definitely controversial. Value theory is the most fundamental difference between capitalists and socialists. It's not so much whether labour determines value, but whether value is intrinsic, that implies either the majority of marxism or of austrianism.

    Exchange Philosophical | A Contribution to the Theory of Value: The Survival Principle of Economics
    "Humanity is positioned into its life process, and survival is the first imperative of this experience. Every individual member of the human species possesses an innate desire to survive. The Desire to Survive is the Will to Life. The psychological and physiological disposition of the human species are related to survival. In order to establish the determinant criteria for value we must first accept the fact that survival is the primordial objective demand of humanity. The concept of value must first be assessed in the context of survival. Survival is the only context in which we may objectively analyze the concept of value and the activity of exchange. From this point, starting with first principles, we may definitively establish the substantial foundation on which exchange is facilitated and value is derived."

I met someone who told me the avocados in Mexico are dirt cheaper than in Canada (dollar value), I remeber that in Japan meat was like 40 dollars for a steak, yet Canadians buy and eat it everyday. So the conclusion (or question) was the value had already been decided by (uncontrollable factors and considerations), the buyer could not make that decision. Does anyone else have a story with similar consequences?

    • @sethapex9670

      @@MarcDufresneosorusrex The price of any given product is a fuction of both supply and demand, however the supply of any given product is in part a function of the demand for the alternative uses of those inputs. Avocados in mexico are cheap because the resources used to produce them are not being used on something else. it also helps that Mexico happens to have an ideal climate for growing them wheras the only way to grow them in canada would be to use greenhouses, which are resources that could in turn be used for other things. Ultimatley the demand for a product and it's related products, with a few other factors, determines how it is priced. value on the other hand is subjective. that mean if you value avocados more than the price of them (not in terms of money but in terms of the other things that money could buy), you will buy them, if you value them less, you won't. that is what subjective theory of value means.
