If I were to ask "What can you do with an API?" you might respond with "What can you NOT do?" or "You can do almost ANYTHING". But before diving into the syntax of how to use the API, I would like to know what you can do with one.
Well the Flare Portal offers many API's, it's not just one. So, for example, there are Flare/Songbird/Coston nodes which you can use for apps to query data on the Flare blockchain (ie. an FTSO data provider uses these kind of nodes, and even normal users which they put in their MetaMask account). But also there is the Flare Explorer API, you can do things like get the ABI of smart contracts or query data it has indexed. It depends on your project how you would use these APIs.
