I've been using a 2007 Epiphone G400 Standard as my main guitar for quite some time now, and it's a very well made guitar. One of the best, if not THE best, playing necks I've ever played. It sounds amazing as well. If this Iommi signature edition plays even half as well as mine, which I'm sure it does, then congratulations on your purchase of a fine instrument.
I have this guitar... one of my favorites also. I love the Iommi signature pickups. Those alone make this such a deal for $799.00 USD, especially since those go for about $179.00 USD apiece. These Epiphones give any standard Gibson SG produced within the last 3+ years a run for the money. Pretty shoddy quality, for what they're asking lately, from what I've played in the stores, and seen of the negative reviews. You forgot to mention that beautiful white binding around the fretboard. Talk about Epiphone paying attention to detail! Nice review!
Just got my lefty version a couple weeks back...in my overstocked guitar stable this is one of the few that if I pick it up first ,it's so hard to put down. I'm not a huge signature series guy, but that tony iommi tone is something I love and is very synonymous with the whole genre....also can get a wide spectrum of heavy rock ,bluesy stuff and metal tones .aside from the heavy headstock (which I understand is a SG issue not this guitar alone) I'd say get this one.
The new model absolutely looks better and I wish my g400 had the ebony fretboard and the bigger and added crosses but the g400 was my main guitar for years also. The fretboard isn’t ebony ( I don’t think) but it’s very dark wood unlike yours. The neck blends in well with the blackness of the rest of the guitar. I like the black chrome and the way it wears. I prefer the old Epi font I don’t like the front Jack because it can get in the way. I’d love to try the new one but it is more expensive Also I prefer to have my Tony Iommi signature on the front.
Great song at the end, but I'm getting older and memory getting ... well you know, what was that tune again. Also, wondered why they chose not to go with a scalloped fretboard. What are your thoughts on that. Thankyou.

+Ucmy Tank The riff I play at the end is from The Mob Rules album, a song called "Falling off the edge of the world" As far as I know, Tony Iommi hardly has any guitars (that he uses) with a scalloped fretboard. So it wouldn't make sense for a Tony Iommi signature guitar to have scalloped frets :)
Definitely wouldn't lay my beautiful limited edition Tony Iommi SG that I haven't even played yet and lay it on the floor like that. That's just a bad habit. Do that over the years you'll have a warped neck guranteed.
5 років тому+5
You will be glad to know it is not on the floor, and has never been put on the floor. In the video the guitars are on a pool table with a grey bed sheet stretched over it.
This guitar should come in a Tony Iommi hard case, such a shame! Regardless it's awesome that an Epiphone SG finally had binding on the neck. You can see why they don't put it, it looks exactly the same as a Gibson.
Hi, I agree with you that the new model looks way better but which one is better in terms of playability and manufacture quality? I think the old model is made in Korea whereas the new one is made in China. In my experience Korean made guitars are pretty good. Thanks😁
I picked up one of the old style g400 iommi guitars used few weeks back. My question is do they sound pretty much the same? I think pickups are same .
8 років тому
+rlta04 Yes, the pickups are the same as far as I can tell (except for the colour) Both have a pair of Tony Iommi Signature Humbuckers so they should sound, and do sound pretty much the same :)
What I like the most and prefer over a regular SG, is that these guitars have the strap button on the horn instead of the neck joint. The 24 frets also got rid of the gap between the neck pickup and fretboard, which makes my ocd tingling. I hope all guitars come with the strap button in that place, in guitar world's video it came on the back, probably a prototype.
8 років тому
+ivse Nice obeservation, I completely agree that securing the strap to the horn is the way to go!! These SG's really are good value!
+StoråsStudio I've watched several videos, including yours, and all guitars come with the same placement of the strap button. In a few videos, one with Tony himself and one from Guitar World Magazine's UA-cam channel, the guitar came with the strap button on the back, but Off-centered, must've been prototypes. I'm Glad it comes on the horn. And the no gap between pickup and fretboard is a big deal for me.
+ivse Finally, someone else who mentions the strap button. I LOVE the fact that it's on the horn, it makes it much more balanced when you play standing up. Although when I got mine last Summer, it came with the strap button on the back, which really pissed me off.
8 років тому
Really, your Epiphone Iommi SG came with the strap button on the back? I have seen some Gibson Iommi SG's in the past that had the button on the back, but not Epiphones.
I got mine in a sale the other day, lefty one too. Only big issue I have is the nut slots are incorrectly cut, the string heights at the nut are all over the place.
I just ordered one! I was originally set on the esp/ltd EC1000 in vintage black but i came across the Iommi custom and i am a huge sabbath fan and it was 100 bucks less so i just went for it....How do you like it? This will be my first epiphone im usually an ESP guy i really hope i made a good choice ...

+Frankie Boots I obviously love this guitar. It is everything I need in a guitar, and excels at playing heavy music. (Although you can play any music you want on it, well that is unless you need a whammy bar...)
I think both are awesome, envy you having the pair. One thing I noticed on the neck side by side is that the frets on the 05 are in great condition. So much for the nay sayers.
8 років тому+1
Yes, the frets on the old one still look great after 10+ years. And it has been in constant use the entire time, it has not been stowed away in storage :)
All the pics I've seen of this guitar show the strap button on the back, like a traditional SG. I much prefer the placement on the upper horn like yours.
8 років тому
+Thomas Kirby I agree, I don't know how you can ensure that you purchase one with the strap button attached to the horn. Both of mine have it attached to the horn, and I bought both of them brand new from respectable instrument stores in Norway. So I was just lucky I guess, 'cause I've seen lots of pictures too where the button is on the back....
StoråsStudio those pictures were before the guitars release they were just prototypes when epiphone announced the guitar and the button was moved later on in the development process
Sweetwater. com sells these with the strap button on the horn. And you know for sure because you get to see the actual picture of the guitar you'll be getting. I've bought many guitars from them, and they've been just as in the picture.
Very nice review, which makes me think even more, which one to get ;-) There are nice old one's second hand for a good price. What do you think about the quality of the saddle on both, like you show in the video at 5:05-05:15 They look a little cheap and not well done.
I bought one a few days ago, but it came without the little white square stamp with a code, but more importantly, the picture is missing aswell as the right side with the serial number and signature of Tony. They told me they are going to get me a new picture and the paper signed by Tony,.It can't have the same serial number since it's a different piece of paper, right?? What would you guy's do? Imo i think i should get a brand new one instead.
@@lauriecarter8931 i finally got the autographed picture with the serie number by mail. 2 months later... Apparently it comes separately the guy told me, seems sketchy but at least i got what was missing. And the serie number on my guitar matches the one on the penflet.
i bought an epiphone les paul custom sg w/maestro as my choice when i went sg hunting. I did however play this awesome Tony Iommi in the store, the neck is amazing so fast! i almost bought it. I think i will have to end up with one sooner or later lol
I bought one,the bridge pickup has failed twice, sweetwater has made right both times by sending me a new pickup.

StoråsStudio *Cool, I'm from Brazil, and my country is a shame things cost dearly here. I'm researching a guitar for import. Thanks for me listening!!!*
New one color scheme is better. But i prefer the round black pegs over the chrome triangle. Chrome triangle makes it look cheap. I prefer the cable plug near the bottom edge rather then front. Cable sticking out the front is not nice looking.

+Flowthrough You should get both models swap parts and make the perfect super guitar! :)
StoråsStudio Strat shape jst feels like it fits best in hand and when your sitting down. LP jst is too bulky. But i do like other ones like the thin Ibanez RG and flying V. Less weight to carry if your standing with it for long time.
I like the blacked out treatment on the old guitar better than the chrome on the new guitar, but that ebony fretboard looks better than the rosewood. Each guitar has it's good points, and both look great. So..., enjoy them both, I guess.
I have one it is nice very nice but not as nice as my Galaxy Trans Starr which also has a finished neck like Tonys 64 SG Special an has killer pickups.
im getting one within the upcoming 2 months ..... but im going to change the color from black to cherry red i have a lot of black guitars xD + to make it look like his stolen GIBSON

the new 2015 signature model. I LOVE it!

Why didn’t you mention the neck binding?
I have the 2015 edition and it came in a well-fitted Epi hard case. I thought they all did, but I bought it used so maybe I just got lucky?
They didn't come with cases. I just scored one second hand. I need a case. All I have is a 💩 gig bag.
Thank you for the job. And what about the sound of each other? what are the differences?
Got myself a second hand at a gd price..love it totally awesome

Did the pickups can spit coil?
What about comparing the important differences?
By the way. Are the Tune-o-matic bridge and stop bar tail piece still Lock-tone? You know, the ones that stay in place when yo removed the strings.
+ivse I haven't changed the strings on it yet, but yes, this guitar has the LockTone™ Tune-o-matic/Stopbar :)
This is the Iommi Sig guitar that his fans should have
