Rocket Stove | Coffee Maker for the Shop

- After wanting to design a Rocket Stove for myself, I got the opportunity to make one for the Millerwelds WIYW (What's in Your Weekend) Series! The design might look a bit complex at first, but once you see how it goes together, I think you'll agree it is fairly straight forward...
This is a great exercise for people who are learning to weld or who are looking for a fun weekend project! For other projects, checkout www.millerweld...
The premise behind a rocket stove is that the chimney provides a draft that brings in unobstructed fresh air directly to the combustion chamber. Although this project is a little bit tongue-in-cheek as the shop coffee maker, the final stove actually worked really well!
Thank you to Miller Electric and Millerwelds.com for providing me with the PPE I used in this video. It is very important to be safe while welding and to wear the appropriate safety gear. (Please check out the links below as it will show your support!)

my new favorite quote: "The best thing about working with steel is how fast the glue dries"
I laughed quite hard at this as well, my thought was, you don't want to accidentally put your hand down on that glue line though. Might hurt alittle more then hot glue lol.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
I personally prefer a wood welding
@@billyjones9045 and what wood you weld? :D
This is my second Keurig Coffee Brewer. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxBrV-RbF5Nk0Rlt9i15aao-YMzqzTG8Vf The first one lasted 6 years. It worked beautifully until the day it didn't. It was hard to go back to the drip coffee for a couple of days while I waited on my Keurig to get here. There is a huge difference in the taste. Keurig makes a really good cup of coffee. This new one is a little different from my old one. I find putting the water filter in was easier than on the old one. Attaching the water reservoir was also a little different but once I figured it out, it too was easier. This new one has the auto off feature but is not programmable like the old one. Only three cup sizes instead of four. The odd thing for me was how much lighter in weight this one is compared to my old one. More plastic and much less metal in the construction of this one. The price is so much less than the original Keurig that I bought and the coffee tastes the same so all in all I am satisfied.
I don't know what impresses me more: your simple, yet ingenious designs; your meticulous skills in all manner of materials; your perfect voice overs; or your extremely polished videos. Well done, sir! Thank you for sharing!
Thank you for your comment!
@@Grunblau Any chance that you’d be willing to sell plans? I bought one of your foundry years ago but lost it. I’d love to buy a PDF.
Agreed, so classy!
@@Grunblau i would like to acquire these rocket stove plans also. Please contact me or comment how and how mych they would be. Thank you
@@Grunblau honestly your voice overs are so perfect that for 3 videos straight I thought it was a text-to-speech voice!
So smooth!
Beautiful result. Fantastic work as always, Brian!
I'm going to have some words with you soon sir if you don't stop watching UA-cam and continue work on the Kawa. 🤣 I keep finding you every where Ronald, very pleasing to see you! All the best!
Very clever use of square tube, looks like a good way of getting a perfect radius on the edges without needing an industrial metal brake.
Yup, exactly!
I never work with metal, but really like your magnetic holders 👍🏼 And not to mention all the great creations you share with that old days voice of a tv presenter. Great stuff!
Actually reminds me of old 1950's military technical instruction film narrator. It was fun and great video.
I always love your design aesthetics. Your attention to detail and meticulous work ethic
Thank you, that’s nice to hear!
@@Grunblau absolutely! I know many are always excited to see a new video from you
Hear hear!
I'm going to steal that quote: " The best part about working with steel is how fast the glue dries."
Any time I go back to wood working, I get antsy…
Yeah thats getting added to the repertoire here too
Warm coffee,, whats that,, 🤨???
Cheers and thank for sharing B.O,, 🍻😎👍!
Wonderful video as always. Your voice sounds exactly like a Canadian television presenter from a 1970’s documentary on industrial design in 1930’s Ireland. I could listen to it for days 🥰
First time ive seen someone doing stop start weld technique to prevent cooking the steel, nice work
Functional and beautiful.
Also, it somehow has a Star Trek feel to it. Like, I imagine Kirk using on a camping trip.
Could be because I have been binging Next Generation for the last couple months?
Normally the last video I would ever watch would be yet another rocket stove build, until I noticed this one is from Brian!
I hadn’t realized they had gotten so popular until I was half way into the build! Oh well, at least it is a different take.
Nice to see you back. Love the vid. Love your pot and mug.
Your voice and cadence reminds me so much of trade school training video presenters, it's awesome. If you kept the playback speed normal throughout the entire video and added some VHS sound and visual effects I think it would be indistinguishable.
I’ll add a blue screen and a PLAY > at the beginning next time!
Always a good day for a Brian Oltrogge video! ^_^
That's really lovely. I wish I could buy one of this quality.
I'm so glad you're back. Your projects are so well designed and executed.
Awesome project
I thoroughly enjoyed this splendid video.
I am glad you found it!
Honestly even a rocket stove is turned into a piece of art if it's made by you.
Beautiful yet simple design.......Meticulously done......Awesome job......Good on you
That is a great build and you have the best training voice out there God bless
That's the most futuristic
rocket stove I've ever seen ! It could be scaled up to do some real cooking !
That saw is sick
Solving the problems that we didn't even know we had. Amazing work man!
This was very therapeutic!
A tutorial worthy of an academy award. Thank you Sir.
The coffee nerd in me recoils at the sight of a percolator haha
Percolators make me think of camping and fishing with my Grandpa…. I suppose we can throw in a pour over for you… :)
@@Grunblau You do you, coffee is about enjoyment first and those memories do sound important to you.
Love the retro style of narration !!!!!!!!!!
Wow. A new video.
I have seen hundreds of these DIY rocket stove jobs many of them are bloody fantastic, but this one is just amazing, such accurate detailed work, and awsome design, looks like it was done with a CNC machine, - my hat off to you sir, - had to subscribe.
Thank you and welcome! Be sure to check out the deck chair if you are interested in how else you can go directly from the computer to steel! It isn’t CNC milling, but I used laser cut patterns to aid a hand held plasma.
The way the world is changing and energy and fuel prices are currently through the roof, this mini-rocket stove design “which is by far the best design I’ve ever seen” would sell like hot cakes! I’d personally buy several for myself and family. Let me know if you ever start selling these, thanks.
Cred că nu scoate fum. Forma E buna. Eficienta maxima. Bravoooooo. Top 1 de pe tot netul la arderea racheta. Și gustul preparatelor este superior.
I like your style Brian
Hey, Thanks!
Please keep posting. Nice to watch someone with a flare for good design.
Thank you!
Totally reminds me of an old two-stroke crankcase ports!
Great work and thanks!
🇦🇺🤜🏼🤛🏼😎🍀
Finally someone who doesn't use a grinder to cut everything out!!!
Yeah, I think a lot of people buy a welder and a grinder…. For like $20 you can get a reciprocating saw and a metal cutting blade. I bought my saw fully intending to use it for wood, but it hasn’t left the metal shop.,,
Functional Art...simply the best!
Easily earned my sub. Time to go watch the back catalog.
Ha! Thanks and welcome! Hope you enjoy!
You're a Rocket... man, I just love watching you work, it's inspiring.
Thank you!
That is the nicest rocket stove I’ve ever seen
Thank you!
This video introduced me to the moka pot. My French press is now a milk frother.
That is very cool. 👍
I love how you're able to use this stove indoors!
Finally a truly useful shop project, I hate cold coffee when I'm working. Job well done.
Beautiful work! Pleasure to watch you create ❤
Thank you!
Awesome, thanks!
I made pretty much the same thing . I was stuck out in the cold trying to repair my truck after my house burned down . so I cooked everything on that thing and of course coffee .. I wrapped copper tubing around the chimney Part. have water dripping 50 tubing then going up to an insulated tank so it works as a hot water heater to . then I went ahead and wired it then Mixed vermiculite with concrete and covered it . then I started adding on and I built the heat riser for the pipe inside it that it's hot and then a fan blows so it works of the heater to .
Wow! Great
Glad to see you making more frequent content. Your stuff is A++.
Thanks! With the new algorithm, fewer and fewer actually see my content (1/4 of the #s before the change). So I am trying to continue to make it a priority.
I’d like to get back to once a month, ideally…
Know that’s a classy rocket stove excellent job ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thanks!
I wish you'd post more videos, hands down the best content on youtube, the merge of intellect and design is extraordinary
Thanks! I wish I could post more too! I have quite a few in process that are getting close though!
Great you´re back doin´ your thang again!!!!!!
Nicely done. I love rocket stoves but this is beyond my expertise. But my father would have loved how far soldering has come. I remember watching as he used flux and solder wire and a crude iron. That was many years ago. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for the nice comment!
Now THIS is a rocket stove like no other
Nice idea man!
Always great videos. Happy to wait the time it takes for you to put them together. Quality trumps quantity. Keep it up. 👍🏻
4th times watching this. I’ll watch this again next month.
There are other videos too, ya know…
Really nice. Good things often take a bit of effort. Thanks for the post.
Flat out excellent-thank you very much for sharing your design in a top-notch video (as usual). There is no shortage of rocket stove plans on the internet so I would have thought it impossible to come up with one that stands out-but you have done so. Achieving functionality, aesthetic, and (clever) constructability all in one design really puts your design in a class of its own-well done and thanks for sharing!
Great video and narration! Amazing!
what a badass rocket stove
Slickest looking version yet. Nice work.
Good looking design makes such a difference!
Thank you!
Красивая работа - РЕСПЕКТ !!!!!
10 out of 10 out of 10.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it!
Nice to see a non traditional looking rocket stove. Love the looks!
I love your design aesthetic.. You encourage me Sir!
The synchronization of the music to the tack welds at 11:07. Mmmmwwwwaaahhhhh.
Just spoted it last night. Great work will buy plan got to make one thanks.
Have fun! Good luck with your build!
The best background music in youtube videos! 😁👍
Yours and my music tastes are in the minority recently…. Crying-baby-underwater-dubstep seems to be everyone’s favorite now…
@@Grunblau oh yes, that can destroy even an otherwise good video
Welded the chimney up. Then I welded the bottom half. None of those match. Gonna be some thiccc welds to make this work. Really appreciate your design. I new to welding
It's been a fun project 😂
Slice through the seam on the side that is too large with a cut off disk. This should get you closer! Also remember that the pieces are wedge shaped. You might be able to ‘slip’ one against the other and have it match up. Then just grind the excess off the ‘lips’. Good luck!
Very cool video! Thanks.
Awesome.. The truly rocketlike concept was just on point. BTW. I love your workspace and equip. Much love from Nigeria.
Beautiful as usual.
Your welding hood is dope. I always talk about buying it but never pull the trigger.
The view screen is wonderful on the helmet! I am not sure why you would need that much peripheral view, but it sure nice to have! Thanks
Love this show 👌👍😇
You can bet your ass I enjoyed it! Can you imagine I postponed a This Old Tony video to watch your video first. 😁
Yeah, I usually watch those right away, too!
You recently got some love in the Rhino forums, where your miniature canoe build was featured.
There could be an hour long tutorial video on how I built that Kayak in grasshopper with hydrostatic calcs and everything…Thanks!
@@Grunblau I'd like to watch it! :)
@@Grunblau I'd watch that one too!
That's badass love it. Just built a rocket batch stove heater with attached bench seat. Keeps a 600sqft room at 70 all night long in 27 degree weather. Never haven to get up one time to stoke it are feed it. Works great now I'm going to have to try this.
That sounds awesome! I’d want to design something that uses pellets next time…
Your talent is amazing and inspiring as always, Brian! Thanks for sharing your creativity with us! Always feel fortunate to get to watch your videos!
That’s a piece of art! Well designed and expertly crafted. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks!
Beautiful! Such a steady build!
Well done Brian, your a very gifted craftsman.
Thank you, Mr. Anderson!
That's a clever way to make that.
any news on the canoe? cheers. this is a gorgeous stove and a very good video. bravo
I have a couple projects that are taking priority, currently, the buck is cut out. I am looking for where to build the full size one as well. There was a moment there when Baltic birch plywood was a prohibitively expensive. Someone asks how much the Kayak was and I started with “well, the buck was $900…”. I also proofed the kit and built another model Kayak off screen for the guy that let me use his laser.
I am very happy about your program I wish you the courage and longevity to carry on a project like this
What a Brilliant Design :)
Thanks!
WHOOOOOO, NEW VIDEOOOO
Yay!
This is the best by far looking extremely great rocket stove. Great workmanship.
Such a cool design
Beautiful design 👌
Thanks!
One of the best channels online. Love it.
Thank you!
Another beautiful episode great job
i made one of these in high school' brought it home and made some ramen on it. Great Success
That sounds like a absolute triumph! BTW a little coconut cream, Thai hot oil and peanut sauce FTW.. add some bamboo shoots and chives if you are feeling fancy.
That is a work of art my friend. An optional fuel source if you can find a restaurant supply is bamboo chop sticks. They work great and come with a paper wrapper.
Huh, that’s hilarious! Thanks
Sir, I have subbed and 'Liked' your Rocket Stove video. Your presentation, with easy to watch, clear and 'instructional' overtones was a delight to watch. The absence of loud endless electric music is a gift as so many youtube video's today seem to demand loud stomping noises with absolutely no context, explanation or helpful narrative. Your video Brian, shows how a good video is put together. I tip my cap sir.
Thank you. I hope you find some of my other videos! I don’t post often so they are easy to miss. I call the music genre “underwater-electronic-screaming babies” and I am not sure why it became a thing. I suspect it had something to do with Casey Neistat as a lot of UA-cam was influenced by his great documentaries. Welcome to the channel!
Casey managed to teach a lot of us how things should be done.
Another great video! Thanks for sharing your talents.
Great design! Cool!
Thank you!
Always kept an eye on your channel over the years hoping that you'd come back. Thank you for taking the time to film once again. Excellent
You know there is like 4 other videos since I came back, right?
@@Grunblau
Yea it started with the kayak then the storage was super cool and practical but definitely next level mechanical engineering patterning which we see in this video. After that was some casting which brought me to the channel originally. I missed the koi project but I see the very high level water jet cut outs which are near impossible to replicate without the insanely expensive equipment that you have. Very cool to see high level professional preparation, design and manufacturing process. Thanks again
Sounds like you are up to date! 👍 I paid to have the Waterjet cut… “Better to know someone that has a WJ than to own one!”
