- The obsession with skin care among young people has skyrocketed, with kids under the age of 13 now flocking to the beauty aisle to purchase high-end skin care products. Should this be a cause for concern for parents? NBC’s Emilie Ikeda reports for TODAY and board-certified dermatologist Dr. Marnie Nussbaum weighs in on teen skin care needs.

I think facial cleanser, simple moisturizer, sunscreen and lip balm are reasonable for tweens.
I think that’s good, but maybe some pimple patches if they need it.
@@thefloralgirlie yea but if they have on tiny pimple they wouldn’t need it
@@thegamingsisters101 I agree but maybe incorporated in their makeup routine (if they have one) a concealer to cover zits and pimples.
First of all a twin which is someone under 13, Do not usually have pimples. And if they start getting pimples. Take them do a dermatologist.
As a tweenager (12, soon to be 13) I agree with this however, I just don’t think age is a skincare routine, but people shouldn’t use products that will damage their skin or things they don’t need.
Younger generations need to also understand that it’s an inside out, eating healthy promotes healthy skin
Yup, they will spend all this money on skincare and then run to the fast food places not knowing that it starts from the inside.
a lot of skincare is bs and unnecessary, just another way to spend money on stuff you don't need@@lpgilber
Mhm, I love me some raspberries lol
AND I HATE MISINFORMATION GEN ALPHA STARTS IN 2013
@@badmaidzFR!
Bad parenting! Tell your kids no! Stop letting them run the show. Basic cleanser, moisturizer & sunscreen is all they need
Exactly no one is telling the gen alpha kids no they are using no discipline these kids are born with an iPad attached at the hip and get a TV in their room at age 6 it's crazy. 😭
It's just bad parenting. They're letting them grow up too fast, meanwhile those of us who are 10+ years older miss our girlhoods. That little girl has fake nails too. And the mom is not reading the labels carefully if she's letting her daughter use Glow Recipe toner which is harsh to the skin and contains a TON of fragrance.
I’m 13 and need a retinal because of Acne so everyone’s different. Not everyone 10+ year old has perfect skin.
@@ethanchasejackson Hopefully it's being recommended by a dermatologist. Retinol speeds up the shedding of dead and damaged skin cells, increasing cell turnover. This is damaging to children's skin because it is irritating.
@@mairinsullivan3432 Yes it was. I have a dermatologist
Even if mom reads the labels, she doesn't have the expertise to differentiate. I applaud young persons adopting a skincare routine, but all they need is a cleanser and SPF...
His comments about parents just not buying the products, to begin with, is the most valid point.
It’s not bad parenting. These days there isn’t much things made and directed towards pre-teens.
"You could stop buying these products for them, too!"
I love how they blame social media. I grew up with commercials on tv and beauty magazines, which, let’s be honest, is 85% ads promoting beauty. We grew up in an age where we couldn’t even google ingredients and we knew better than to use retinol, aha, or anything with the word acid. Also, I feel bad for these girls. The old tween spaces at the mall have closed. There’s no where to shop. There are no cool toys out there for them to want. When I was 9 years old, I wanted a cabbage patch doll and strawberry lipgloss. These girls don’t have options or tween outlets designed for them. As for being rude to staff or other customers, that’s on the parents. As parents, it’s our job to guide and teach our children to be productive members of society and not a menace to society. Today show, didn’t show that part of the tiktoks. We have 10 year olds destroying the stores and samples and being rude to Sephora staff and customers. It’s ok to be a kid but not ok to be a destructive little bully. Kids will be kids but hopefully they will learn how to behave in stores.
They do not belong in stores, and especially the mall in general without adult supervision at such a young age. They are handed fistfuls of money and gift cards without any oversight.
the biggest factor are the parents funding all these expensive brands
I started having a skincare routine at 30 LOL
The only thing I wish I started earlier is sunscreen.
i did not have a skincare routine until i had acne lol 😂 which was in high school.
Wasted youth. There are so many more important things to be focused on during that developmental period. There's plenty of time in one's thirties on to focus on looking one's best, particularly given that 'one's best' typically means 'what you looked like before 30.' This isn't harmless 'the grass is always greener elsewhere' but actually costing them money, skin health, and missed opportunities for meaningful growth. I was focused on creating service project and volunteering in my community at age 14, and on making friends and doing well in school before that. Anything productive would be better than focusing on trying to fix what isn't broken.
I had lots of acne when i was a teenager and didnt know anything about skincare, now in 2024 theres so much information about skincare on social medai and they might do too much to their skin at such young age....
but what i learned is just to make sure to moisturize and if youre a teenager, less is more
Parents and children should really study what these products are. They would not be so willing to expend huge dollars for unneeded products.
Parents and kids would still get those products because the whole point of using them is to show status and how in trend a tween is. That’s why DE, Glow Recipe, and Bubble are the brands you’ll see being used the most by tweens on Tik Tok. For makeup it’s Channel, Glossier, Nars, and a couple other brands. Not sure why a 9-13 needs all this, but it’s interesting to see.
I feel like it’s OK for young people to have skin care routine if their skin is really bad if it’s not, they don’t need a skin care, routine, other than cleanser, moisturizer, sunscreen, and lip balm
I agree
Im almost 11 and my whole skincare routine is washing my face in water and some of my aunts nourishing cream from nivea 😅 ill get a cleanser soon
melanie martinez warned us with mrs potato head! ''kids forever, kids forever, baby soft skin turns into leather''
purrr
This is why i dont allow me kids on tiktok and i watch their device

I remember those neutrogena commercials with Kristin Kruek, and she talked about get this product for acne. In middle school, this one girl wore cake and cake of makeup and we didn’t like that. Times have changed.
I tried all those stuff and I think I gave myself chemical burns bc all it did was dry my skin out, made me red and crusty on top of still having pimples. I still remember thinking is it suppose to burn when I used it. Don't believe all the selling points! I just use face wash and toner to remove any kind of day grime off and moisturizer during the winter months. Everything else has to do with your diet. Fix your diet, fix your skin probs.
For tweens, I suggest mineral sunscreen for sensitive skin.
why are they saying young people these are literal children
They are YOUNG people? Hello?
I’m obsessed cuz I have acne. This is all. I will do less skincare after get rid of acne
My routine :
Face wash
Moisturizer
That’s it :)
(Btw I know everybody’s face and skin are different I had like a little bit of acne when I was 10 and 9 and If you need it and want to just take care of there skin is ok I’m a teen and I’m just taking care of my skin )
Same (I wash my face sometimes and moisturize)
If they have a Mom who is obsessed with their own beauty care, then guess what? The kid will be too. Not good.
I started skincare when I was 13 because of my bad acne, and begin makeup at around 16 or 17 😅
They do not need skin care and makeup. They do not need social media. They should be playing with Barbie dolls, watch tv, and read books.
Oh great. Raise the kids to be consumers. The American way!
I’m 13 almost 14 and I love skincare, but I don’t use makeup. I see 9 year olds having a complex skincare routine and they use crazy amounts of makeup. For example when I went to Ulta, I saw this girl age 10 at most with a BASKET full of skincare/makeup which I think is crazy, when I was there age I was shopping at Claire’s and Justice get accessories, clothes, and hunting for L.O.L. dolls. I wore shirts until I was 11 having those cute little sayings on them, now it’s straight to lululemon, crop tops and short shorts. So many kids are rushing to grow up because of what they see on TikTok and UA-cam. Back to skincare the amount of skincare and makeup used by girls younger than me is INSANE, here’s my routine.
Mine
-face wash
-toner
-serum
-moisturizer
-sunscreen
-(sometimes mascara, very rare)
-setting spray
At that age, I rolled out of bed without combing my hair and the only reason I wash my face now is bc I immediately get a pimple when I don't -bc oily skin. And at 9/12/13/14, my skin was pristine so I couldn't be bothered. I probably had sun damage tho bc I was just roasting outside in the sun -no kinda coverage.
@@shad0wCh8ser ngl days when I’m just at home I just brush my teeth, if I do wash my face it’s when I have a pimple or my face is extremely oily
"You could stop buying the products for them too..." 👍
And are they teaching them to be frugal because they don't want to waste all their money on skincare? Plus, they have to be very careful because some of the ingredients can be very harsh. Some older women have serious skin conditions because of using the wrong skincare.
i literally didnt have ANY social media until i was almost 12 and i didnt have a phone until i was 14 in high school...WHY DO THESE TINY KIDS GET SOCIAL MEDIA AND PHONES AT LIKE 7 😭
This is so stupid
As a kid from gen alpha, using too much skincare just damages my skin which is why I prefer just an acne cleanser (for my forehead lol) and moisturizer/sunscreen which is reasonable. Skincare is morely recommended for kids like me who developed acne and pores at this age but I wouldn’t use too much like this 10 step ones .!
Don’t use that garbage.
Media has overthrown parents and kids dude what a crazy idea or an influencer making influence of bad choices and products on your life dude when i was a tween all i cared about was videos games and my lil crush and playing with my dogs n friends after school maybe even going on the tramp or taking a bike ride or walking in the park now it’s all about sephora or ultra like bruh what is this generation alpha
My 12 year old daughter just bought 100 worth of skin care from Target. I'm sooo annoyed!!!
Then parent her
Tweens only need,
-1 face cleanser
-1 moisturizer
-1 sunscreen (usually whatever the family has)
For teens,
-1 acne face wash
-1 gentle face wash
-1 toner/serum (optional; that pink oridinary one is popular)
-1 moisturizer
-sunscreen
Late teens, like age 18 to mid 20's (25) is when you should add, vitamin c serum, exfoliator, toner, other serums.
Mid 25 is when you should add a retinol.
You don't need it before then unless prescribed by a doctor.
I was from the millennial era, my mom bought me neutrogena acne face wash, proactive face wash, etc, and I never got a moisturizer.
Sometimes I'd use sunscreen if it was sunny outside.
I don't even remember there being any moisturizers on the shelves but I'm sure there was.
The moisturizers were probably expensive and sold to 30 year olds, so I as a teen, I never noticed them.
@@specialtwice4975 I’m 13 and need a retinal and vitamin c serum because of Acne so everyone’s different. Not everyone 10+ year old has perfect skin.
@@specialtwice4975My dermatologist prescribed it
Where did she get the $$?
as a teen, I research, think about, and pay for all of my skincare - I also kept it really simple with a cleanser, moisturizer, gentle wash, and lip products, I JUST WANT TO TAKE CARE OF MY SKIN
im a gen alpha and im so glad that my mom and dad taught me well-
As a tween, I’m only interested in skincare that I’ll never get because I have acne. And I have actual knowledge rather than just using random skincare. Too bad I’ll never get to have proper skincare.
The parents I guess doesn’t care about their children health and that’s sad the parents should make sure that the brand is safe and they should probably ask their doctor if skincare is safe for their children
Omg... How sad. Just say no parents. Good lord. It's ok to say no. Maybe they cut the DARE program and ppl didn't get that memo...
I am one of the skincare girls but only use it because my parents had horrible acne and I check the ingredients to make sure the ingredients are good
What happens when you let yo kids watch randos on tiktoks selling GRWM products bc they don't want to watch their kids themselves and then they buy them chemical product that will get absorbed into their skin. You know some can cause acid burns.... that's the point of some products. It's made to remove the top layer of skin to force your body to regenerate a new layer that is "newer" aka softer and more supple but with young or sensitive skin, it can cause skin burns and rashes.
Meanwhile I only started having a skincare routine last year, at the age of 22 bruh
9 isnt a tween
Yes , nine years old is a child
All they need is soap and lotion.
This is creepy. Take away the social media. Let kids be kids.
"They were born with their phone". No, they were not. Their parents bought them their phones, and then pay for the data. They failed to monitor what apps they have on their phones. Or do tweens have incomes? Take responsibility for your children.
Why is a child's skin routine more expensive than an adult's? Strange
Stick to a simple facial skin care of cleanse tone and moisturize with a high SPF and cleanse am and pm
I am 13 and I use face wash, moisturizer and spf. That is a good routine for someone my age.
I’m glad I stopped shopping at fancy stores it really is a waste of money all you need is the dollar store Walmart and Amazon. These stores are a complete rip off. Also VASELINE is the goat for skin care routine. Soap, water, vaseline cocoabutter. Thats it, too much skin products can damage your skin. Only use moisturizer before you’re putting your make up on but use vaseline everyday
“If she can learn and take care of it” yeah.. kids are known for following rules and listening to their parents. More and more taxes to restrict things because yall can’t parent
This is the parent's responsibility.
First of all certain things are not for teens. And lash curlers are not necessary for Anyone, unless your lashes are going down. Which now ones are. They also do not need Anything that has acids or peels. Their skins are not even fully developed yet. You don't need wrinkle creams my God you haven't even gotten to period some of you.
Guess who, are the one's getting "RICH"
2010-2012 is still gen z. You have to be born in 2013+ to even qualify for gen alpha.
Well it depends, many websites say 2010+ is gen alpha but many also say 2013+ is gen a, although I’m not sure what is the cut off year. I did some searching and I found more appearances of 2010+ , although I am not sure.
clarins made a line specially for them and its not cheap!!
Kids don’t even need serious skin care! The skin cells impeccable because they are KIDS!
Btw gen alpha is 2013 onwards
I don’t have a problem with it unless it’s retinol or something at least they are not doing something else that’s bad
evereden and cerave daily moisturizing lotion also cetaphill cleanser
Gen alpha is 2013 onwards…..
im 2010 but im gen z
Help my skincare is legit face wash ( only if I wear makeup which isn’t a lot) moisturizer and sun screen and I have SUPER dry skin so I use the tiniest bit of hyloronic acid
Nothing wrong with this skincare regime at all. No dermatologist would have a problem with it. Keep doing what you're doing, and don't listen to companies who simply want your money.
I'm on the youtube app
LEAVE US ALONE PLSSSS
So happy Im gen z
This is ridiculous and bad parenting I never did this when I was a kid and I don’t do it now with my daughter
Social media influencer 😂😂😂
as long as they dont use retinol their fine quit yapping (i am apart of gen z)

I myself as a 13 year old girl am quite infuriated by the amount of people who say ''back in my day we would play with barbies''. Times have changed, and no one can control that. people need too stop calling mums that let there daughters use skincare ''bad mums'' because its not like its ur child, its there's. I personally as a 13 yr old use a cleanser, toner, lash serum, and a moisturiser. Some days I do wear a little bit of makeup like a tinted lip gloss and clear mascara and brow gel but that's it . I may have alot of skincare and makeup but I don't actually use much of it. Honestly not to throw shade at you adults or anything but at least we know what we are doing with skincare because when you adults were 15-18 you would roughly scrub at your skin, put rubbing alcohol on your face, pop pimples and use hayers toner.
all u need is cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen. honesty u sound influenced by the internet but not trying to throw shade
@@gabbyisyogirl69 what I do to my skin is not your concern. maybe I am influenced easily but thsts fine. I use skincare because I want my skin to be nice when I'm older, not because I want to be ''trendy''.
I was 13 in 2018 I thought all of us were starting skincare back then , idk why it’s such a huge deal to people now, I get because more kids are posting about it but even then there’s nothing wrong
