He would actually be a very strong meta option if you know USSJ2 wouldn't exist.
It's many things. The only reason he even started tapering off in the first place was because of the introduction of strike-countering gauges, so Janemba and UI (more importantly, UI) would've had Nameku at a lower level, even if Gohan wasn't around, but Gohan IS a major part.

The problem now with him isnt the character kit himself well accept that the green card is a throw card that doesn’t draw a card everytime. But it’s damn melee counters. If there was no melee counters he could hang out with the boys in the meta so would VB but they added a million melee counters back to back
Getting red on the third slot feels impossible, they really should do red slots easier on unique equips
