Loved the video Sam. What a list and is a great representation of how diverse our common interests are in terms of film watching. Lots of love for many of your picks. Loved Aftersun. It’s so powerful by how understated so much of the filmmaking is. It never hits you over the head with anything and it’s to its eternal credit. It respects the viewer to have e worked out enough before that end scene. Wonderful film.
Glad to see Aftersun as your #1. Best new movie I've seen in a couple years. That final moment is a bomb. Messiah of Evil was another fave for me. Lastly, the two best for me this year were BFI's Deep End and Criterion's Love Streams. Can't believe I took this long to see those, and the discs are quite good looking.
Good video and a good range of titles. A few unfamiliar to me but several also that I have really enjoyed including Sword of Doom, A Ghost Story and Aftersun. I’m not sold on current attempts to reappraise Tough Guys Don’t Dance as a masterpiece but at the least it’s an interesting watch
WOW! Absolutely brilliant video Sam 😀🍿🙌🎸🎶 I rewatched ‘The Sword Of Doom’ last week and it is such a great film that indeed; very underrated IMO aswell; that was such an immense ending too 😱 ‘Messiah Of Evil’ was very good mate; some effective imagery in there; well narrated in/out aswell; the coastal setting worked well; loved that cinema scene in the film! I really like ‘Enys Men’ aswell; can’t wait to see what Mark Jenkin is going to bring to the table next as I have really enjoyed what he did with this & ‘Bait’; both great films. ‘The Guest’ has such a great 80’s buzz about it; I sort of wished we got a sequel; but nonetheless a really awesome film 👍 ‘Big Time Gambling Boss’ another home run from Radiance there man; I got the next 3 titles of theirs coming in the post. ‘Aftersun’ is definitely one of MUBI’s finest Sam; absolutely heart wrenching stuff and an incredible directorial debut from Charlotte Wells who is going places 😊 Fantastic list bud; keep up the great work and oh I love the cap btw 😀👍
Thanks, I too enjoy the hat aha Sword of Doom is an absolute doozy! Been on my mind alot recently. Messiah of Evil scratches a particular itch that few others have and for that reason I rated it so highly on last year's watches. Thanks for your kind words, got some more videos in the pipeline, including Soft Focus, which I'm excited to launch soon. Cheers 👍
@@FilmBloggerSam awesome stuff Sam; really looking forward to the future content you got lined up 😀👍 I just set up my channel last week; started it off with my Blu-Ray collection which is split into parts; more to come 😊 I definitely be revisiting ‘The Sword Of Doom’ again for sure; I reckon that 4K Criterion of ‘Dreams’ is gonna look stellar; gonna have to upgrade it to 4K man 👌
Solid list! Quite a few I haven’t seen yet. I need to check out the Messiah of Evil release from Radiance. I’ve only seen the Code Red release and it looks okay but from what I’ve heard this new scan is much better. Here are some of my favorite first time watches. 1. Bullet in the Head(John Woo) 2. Morgiana(Juraj Herz) 3. The Inferno(Tatsumi Kumashiro) 4. A Bittersweet Life(Kim Jee-woon) 5. Burning Paradise(Ringo Lam) There are a few that are lower on my list I want to mention. The House That Screamed got a release from arrow this year and I really enjoyed it. It’s a Spanish horror movie from 69 and Argento cited it as an influence on Suspiria. Definitely worth checking out. The Appointment is a British horror movie from the early 80s that I think is right up your alley. It has a BFI blu ray. Really interesting movie. Last is a comedy from the 1930s called Stage Door. It stars Katherine Hepburn and Ginger Rogers and has an early appearance by Lucille Ball. It’s got great, witty dialogue and the characters are so likable and well written. I’m amazed this hasn’t received more attention. I watched it when I saw that Pauline Kael had said it was one of the best comedies of the 30s and I totally agree. This might be the longest comment I’ve ever left. Discoveries are fun to share though so hopefully you don’t mind.
Thanks for the wonderful comment. I watched Burning Paradise and Inferno in 2023 as well and enjoyed them both a lot. Thanks for the other recommendations you made, lots for me to look into 👍
