I bought my Mrs your mum’s book for Christmas. She started reading it and is so excited about it. She just sent me a text from the bedroom saying it’s really good!
By the way, I introduced my mum to your adventure vids and she loves them. We've binged both the "how not to" adventures, the Birmingham missions and we just finished up Norway last week. Having lived in PNG years ago (in Lae no less) I was so confident the last one was PNG, and as you became more confident in Jamaica, I was thinking 'yeah he's probably right', only to get reaffirmed in the reveal 😅
The first time i saw the landscape and vechile type, i thought the same this is PNG, but when tom said Jamaica and lot of resort there i was thinking maybe he's right 😂😂
As a Queenslander, my first thought for the PNG round was somwhere up in far-north Queensland (obviously ignoring the theme of the map) so PNG made a lot of sense at the end.
Jurassic Park was filmed in Hawaii. But I did think this last one was Polynesia somewhere, from my knowledge of the area. I was thinking Fiji or Samoa, based on the landscape and people, so not too far wrong.
Sitting in my bedroom, I did actually call PNG. Reasons - the cars looked very Australian, Lots of Toyotas, and a ute. The crocodile in the pool said it was more likely in Australasia than the Caribbean to me. The Germans had a bit to do with the founding of PNG from a western perspective hence the Heineken bits. And lastly, the place had the look of accommodations for a mining camp rather than a tourist operation. Not sure if that's what it is but just gave me that vibe.
For the China one: First, all the signage is very standardized in all major airports in China, so that was instantly a domestic Chinese airport based on the signs for gates, exits, etc. Second, all the people you saw were Chinese. The hairstyle on the younger guy is very Chinese if you live here, and that old guy at the end, same. The fact there aren't actually any foreigners here is a giveaway the opposite of what you were thinking (non-major city). The real clue though was the multiple stores with Sichuan (四川) in the name, especially the one with the ladies out front. Those stores indicate that you're in that province and they are selling touristy stuff for people to buy to take home/give as gifts wherever they are flying to. Chengdu is the capital of Sichuan and likely the only city that's going to have as modern an airport as you're seeing here. Very hard without knowing Chinese of course, but quite simple if you can. Also, side note that Shanghai does have two major airports if you're doing something like this again. Pudong (very east side of the city) is the bigger/major one, Hongqiao (more west, the one you picked) is also international but more domestic focused.
Even if you can't read Chinese, the logo of Sichuan Airlines was visible on the flight information panel. Sichuan Airlines flight to Shenzen is likely to be in Chengdu - although Chengdu also got two major airports, and in this case, it was the older and less busy one.
The departure board also showed the flight number so if you allowed yourself to Google that, you'd see it was a Chengdu-Shenzhen flight. As someone who has lived in China in the past, for me the most interesting thing is how good Tom is at recognising random foliage but then it seemed to take him ages to realise he was in a Chinese airport in spite of all the clues - just goes to show how different we all are.
Interestingly enough I looked up the Tyler you called a fraud about Lichtenstein's straight line mission, and he's actually in a big controversy right now for doing "journalism" but editing problematic videos from completely different places to fit his narrative. Not surprised he was doing scummy stuff years ago as well but it's interesting you mentioned him with the current events taking place. Loving the geoguesser as always and I'm excited to hear your plans for the new year
5:45 That's when I immediately knew where it was. The characters are the clue. Not just their form (which narrows it down to the country), but their meaning (which narrows it down to the part of the country). Red sign at 6:39 is a clue to the city.
I didn’t play along but it was fun watching that last round. I used to live in Papua New Guinea, and when I saw that guy from above I thought he looked Melanesian and started suspecting PNG. Then I saw the Hevilift helicopter, which is one of the main ones they use there for mining and started being more sure. If you had zoomed in maybe it would have been possible to see the tail number that would have started with P2. But then you zoomed in on the beer advertisement and saw clear as day the bird of paradise. From there on it was just knowing that you were about to get completely wrecked.
The Helicopter defeintely deserved a lot more attention than Tom gave it. I could not make out P2 though, I thought it was PT or PY, of which PT would have put you in Brazil...
As soon as I saw all the Toyota troop carriers and tropical location that reminded me of far north Queensland my mind instantly jumped to PNG for the last one.
The opening shot of the second photosphere rather gave the game away - 四川 (Sichuan - ‘The Four Rivers’) - is a large province in Southwestern China. Chengdu its capital has an International Airport. The large signs in that duty free concourse said it was a Sichuan Speciality gift shop - Happy New Year :-)
Even without any knowledge of Chinese characters, it was clear given the near total lack of English signage that this airport was deep, deep inside China. No way in hell it was going to be Shanghai or Beijing fo example. That would've been enough for a decent guess, even checking major airports on the map for matching Chinese characters.
Love the videos, GeoWiz. An English straight-line mission idea: from Bournemouth to Stonehenge. This was the journey taken by Tess and Angel at the conclusion of Thomas Hardy's Tess Of The D'Urbervilles (though Hardy renamed Bournemouth "Sandbourne" in his fictionalized Wessex). Keep up the good work, man. I always enjoy your geoguessing and real world antics. You're a legend!
This is for sure one of my favorite type of maps. Managed to beat you for two of the rounds even, but did horribly in two of the ones you did good in. Round 1: Clocked the South Asian looking clothing but my gut feeling wasn't as sure on India or Pakistan for some reason. The landscape wasn't looking the part for me, so I went for the greener more mountainous northern parts of Iran, close to Tehran and got 1751 points. Round 2: Recognized the Chinese, clocked that it had to be an airport in a major city in Mainland China, and it had to be a relative distance away from Shenzhen, so it could not be Hong Kong or Guangzhou, and I was not picking up on any Beijing vibes. On a whim I decided on Chongqing Airport, which happens to be close enough to Chengdu to net me 4268 points. Round 3: Flubbered this one big time. I was convinced that mostly all of Europe has official coverage, including the East and there are no truly obscure Street View countries in Europe. So based on the Christian cross, small spread out towns and mountainous landscape, I just guessed it would have to be some obscure place in South America. I had never seen a Paraguay round so I decided on the mountainous parts of Paraguay. 13 points, big oof. Round 4: Easy, got it spot on. Went to Dili and found it within seconds. It helped here to know that "masjid" is just another word for mosque. Round 5: Had to guess completely based on vibes like you did, but my vibes sensor was picking up more on the South East Asia or Oceania looking foliage. Though instead of noticing the off-road cars clue which would point to somewhere less built up like PNG, I decided on Brunei as a wild guess. 569 points, so not a huge win on distance but at least I was roughly in the correct region of the world.
That last one was rough. Jamaican cars are mostly Mitsubishis, Toyotas, Suzukis, and Daewoos imported from Japan, so they look totally different from the American models despite being near the Americas.
I was wondering where I'd heard of the city of Lae, Papua New Guinea before and I remembered. That was the last city Emilia Earhart departed from before she disappeared.
From the last one I could tell it wasn’t Caribbean. The cars and utes are very Australian, so to not travel too far they must be close to Australia. Also another reason as to why so much is in English. I have lived in Australia so that may be only something you would notice after living there but something to consider for future rounds. On the road they were driving on the left, Ik both PNG and Jamaica drive on the left but I did find it strange Tom didn’t mention it.
10:21 I've been there! Photo's I took on top of that mountain have been my wallpaper for a long time, I even thought I was looking at my desktop for a second.
the last round reminded me a round you were upon fire station in suriname. i thought it'll be same country. because of the dutch texts in suriname round and heineken advertisement in this one
Didn't expect to beat you on the challenge. I messed up the frist one, considered Punjab but thought you would see taller mountains on the horizon there. Went Shanghai just like you on the next one, lost two points on not getting the correct mountain (but for some reason instantly recognized Liechtenstein from the street layout of Schaan and the Rhine), perfect score on the mosque and at last I at least got the correct country. It looked Australian to me, but not too Australian, if that makes sense. That lead to a total just over 17k points.
As a boy from the West Midlands, it was funny that you ended with the Crossroads Hotel. 'That's right Miss Diane, but we're a Motel not a Hotel'. Peace All
Timor Leste is only obscure if you're not portuguese since it was a former portuguese colony. "Leste" is a Portuguese word that means "east" and was adopted after the independence to distinguish the now independent country from the west side of the Timor island, which is still part of Indonesia. Also, the Santa Cruz cemetery massacre, executed by the occupying indonesian troups on the 12th of November 1991, was all over the news in many countries, not just in Portugal.
About the obscure country of East Timor (Timor Leste in Portuguese) , it is a former Portuguese colony, independent from 1975 so its likely to also find Christian churches and the street names are in Portuguese, easily identifiable by the “ão” in the end of many words. 😊
Hey man. You’re probably not going to read this but are you able to do an update vid with what you’ve got coming up with the channel in regards to missions?
No way! I actually guessed the Papua New Guinea one within a minute or two - I've grew up there and have driven past that hotel four or five times! Glad to see some representation!
Happy New Year Tom. I had purchased one of your mum’s books at Christmas and I’m enjoying it so much. I do enjoy your Geoguessr. I particularly enjoyed this one. Could you do one in my home county of Somerset, England please?
Those cars, and left hand drive, it seemed really obvious that it was either northern Australia or chain of islands above. I was hands in head as you got fixated on Jamaica. Oh and teh Croc in teh pool :)
Having never been to any of the tropical island paradises, my first thought for the last one was an Australian tourist destination, along the lines of Bali. I guess PNG is a little more obscure, but still fits the bill. The landcruisers and hiluxes really gave it away for me.
The last one looked like a worker's town, probably a mine or something near. I would have guessed Australia by the cars, but I think it's probably an australian owned business anyway
Omg as soon as you started looking at the airport shop I was like.... I've been there! I almost bought some sechuan pepper from there then settled on a little panda keychain from another shop! 6 years ago, layover for my next flight to Phuket! What a random coincidence!!!
17340 points. Only beat you because you had 1 point in the last round! For China I was in Beijing. I didn't see many foreigners but I did see a clock "Beijing" and was mislead by it. Last round I was in Komodo. I thought the croc in the pool resembled a komodo dragon 😆 and thought the rest of the image fit there quite well too... So I was quite a bit off, but not as far as you 😄 It was a fun round, thanks for sharing!
18550. the last round ruined my score. I was on for 23k but i went dutch west indies which was stupid seeing how high the mountains were. but very happy with my score as i only used about 30 seconds per round. cheers mate!
What Ive noticed: If it looks - like you said - like Jurassic Park, its basically always Papua New Guinea. Very fascinating landscapes down there. Worth looking into in my opinion. 😅
The helicopters in that last one look like work aircraft to me. Not for tours. That's probably a hotel they put international workers at who are managing some kind of operation that involves those helicopters.
Jurassic Park is hawaii. The famous scene where they arrived on the helicopter is the na pali Coast on kauai. Interesting fact, the place where the t rex takes the other dinosaur when they first arrive is the same place as Hurleys golf course in Lost

Do you want to prove him wrong?
*altitude
Amazing video at always
About the obscure country of East Timor (Timor Leste in Portuguese) , it is a former Portuguese colony, independent from 1975 so its likely to also find Christian churches and the street names are in Portuguese, easily identifiable by the “ão” in the end of many words. 😊
Tom playing basic geoguessr is a classic
14:18 "That's crackin" Someone watched the new wallace and grommit over the festive period
I love this map! Hope you had a great Xmas tom
Hey man. You’re probably not going to read this but are you able to do an update vid with what you’ve got coming up with the channel in regards to missions?
Jurassic park was film on Oahu at Kualoa Ranch. 50 first dates, tears of the sun and a bunch more movies were filmed there
No way! I actually guessed the Papua New Guinea one within a minute or two - I've grew up there and have driven past that hotel four or five times! Glad to see some representation!
Man I just played a round and saw the horrific building you had on your brutality architecture round in Florence. That was quite a dejavu
Happy New Year Tom.
I had purchased one of your mum’s books at Christmas and I’m enjoying it so much.
I do enjoy your Geoguessr. I particularly enjoyed this one. Could you do one in my home county of Somerset, England please?
OMG round three, as someone who loves maps and Geography also I'm loving that round!
Those cars, and left hand drive, it seemed really obvious that it was either northern Australia or chain of islands above. I was hands in head as you got fixated on Jamaica. Oh and teh Croc in teh pool :)
20:02 that’s a hilarious double entendre for a nature area. Hope he’s ok after that 😅
Having never been to any of the tropical island paradises, my first thought for the last one was an Australian tourist destination, along the lines of Bali. I guess PNG is a little more obscure, but still fits the bill. The landcruisers and hiluxes really gave it away for me.
I didn't expect to get a "wait I've been there"-moment on this map! Lovely Liechtenstein!
My husband pointed out that in the last plhoto the truck driving on the road behind the heliport is driving on the left. 17:47 Tom missed that clue.
The thought chain of litter -> India was so golden 😂I had the same.
The last one looked like a worker's town, probably a mine or something near. I would have guessed Australia by the cars, but I think it's probably an australian owned business anyway
You got a little mention by Max Fosh on "The Comedian's Comedian Podcast" yesterday. idk who Max Fosh is but was happy to hear you mentioned.
Max fosh is a comedian n a utuber
@@ryantaylor841 and arguably a much bigger one
Max Fosh ... isn't that the guy that pulled an Uno Reverse on the ref in a game of foot-soccer?
@@A-D-D-F_Toxic yep
Love it, Tom.
Happy New Year, Tom. A few pounds here or there during the holidays is something we all needed, I think.
Happy New Year to you.
Omg as soon as you started looking at the airport shop I was like.... I've been there! I almost bought some sechuan pepper from there then settled on a little panda keychain from another shop! 6 years ago, layover for my next flight to Phuket! What a random coincidence!!!
Fyi: The store you looked at so closely had these signs 四川 = Sichuan which Chengdu is the capital of.
lol that last guess is hilarious
Hey Tom. Are you considering ever bringing back how not to travel Europe ? I think this was my favorite series of yours ever
So I was quite a bit off, but not as far as you 😄
It was a fun round, thanks for sharing!
Funny enough at 19:50 there was a place called "Heineken Hole" in Jamaica!!!
18550. the last round ruined my score. I was on for 23k but i went dutch west indies which was stupid seeing how high the mountains were. but very happy with my score as i only used about 30 seconds per round. cheers mate!
I was confident you were on the right track about Caribbean, also. Jamaica seemed a good guess.
LAST ROUND : you could see it was left-side driving from the 2 vehicles on the road :) thanks for another great video !!
This would be a great map to treat like a geo detective video!
Happy New years Tom
Pandas in the gift shop and the signage on the windows near the stairs to Gate 27 clearly says CH………. INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT. Good effort though!
