Audix's mics are really first class, so we had to investigate not one, but four of their new closed back headphone models, now starting from a very modest £125.
Tom tries them out to find the pick of the bunch for mixing and it's not what you would expect!

Just comment for fun. Listening to Far Beyond Driven (Pantera) with A140. Just perfect! Comparing to K361 (similar but Audix perhaps better). Third place MT5, Fourth place SR880, fifth place 99NEO, sixth place M40x. My ears, nothing more.

Great review. I have the 150 headphones and love them. The guys at Audix said “listen to a movie trailer “ OMG!!! These put you in the theater! I have all of the studio standard headphones but these offer depth and a stereo image none of them do. I don’t need Sonarworks with these as I do with the others because they translate so well! I appreciate you comparing to Slate, because I thought the same thing... are they the same - NO! I like Slate but I was curious as well. I actually purchased the audiophile braided copper cable.... maybe it’s me, but I do hear a difference. The Audix 150 are all around a great sounding headphone and to me not just at the price.

What better for mixing - Audix 140 or AKG 702 ? both with your frequency correction, what's better?

Hello! Lynx Hilo or SPL Phonitor XE with DAC 768 for mixing and mastering on LCDX and Focal Clear Pro MG? Thank you.

Spl... crossfeed matrix and a superior amp circuit.

@@ScanProAudioTV I saw reviews saying it is not true reference? That it sounds too thin? I have no way to test these and have to rely on pros like you which has access to these devices...thank you very much

You have to understand there is no perfect setup.
I would say Hilo has slightly better conversion, but the amp circuit is inferior and there’s no crossfeed.
Even RME ADI-2 DAC is also a serious contender for a lot less money, as it has at least basic crossfeed and a good circuit. The differences between them all are not enournous.
Merging Anubis is also a great option for an all in one, but you’ll have to use Canopener for the crossfeed.

@@ScanProAudioTV thank you very much. Currently I’m getting pretty good results with Acustica Audio Sienna. But my Apollo twin x sounds to my ears a bit muddy and not defined... I may be crazy but to my ears even my Audiofuse via HP out sounds better than Apollo’s HP. Thank you again!!!!

@@ChestermereToday That wouldn't surprise me. So your not using a Headphone amp and just going straight from your interface? That's a NO NO XXX! All stock headphone amps in interfaces are crap, you could say. There are certain ones, like Merging Anubis, and the like where they take a hell of a lot more care with their headphone amps in their interfaces. But those are the exceptions! NOT THE RULE! The RULE is, all headphone amps in interfaces are 2$-3$ parts or so. And you'll definitly NEED a seperate Headphone amp to do anything on them! That includes recording, especially loud source material like DRUMS or HORNS! With soft spoken singers or rappers, who rely on Auto-Tune and whatnot, you can get away with it. But for everything else...you should immediately get some sort of proper headphone amp! At least for yourself if your doing the engineering/editing/mixing/and mastering! If your one a budget, there's a couple cheap headphone amps that do a pretty good job. One of them is from Drop and it's pretty good for doing engineering/editing/mixing drop.com/buy/drop-thx-aaa-789-linear-amplifier ! But if you need more than 1 channel for recording purposes then the classic Furman HDS6 with the individual HR6 remote headphone mixers. Some of classic engineers from the 90's still use those for tracking! I do too! Although I do not use it for mixing or mastering! Although that's better than your stock interface if you don't have the cheese!
