But people in life aren’t always pleasant to look at, and that has no bearing on their character. Why grown adults can’t comprehend that not every character should be a super model is beyond me. I don’t know about the rest of you, but I find the thought of an “idealized” world where everybody looks like a runway model to be both boring and insulting to us as a species.
This also plays into the whole thing about unattractive characters in videogames and other people (mostly women) always being like: "THIS IS NOT WHAT WOMEN LOOK LIKE, TOUCH GRASS AND MEET REAL WOMEN, VIRGIN LOSER" whenever someone mentions the sore lack of attractive characters in games nowadays. There's a stupidly simple reason why that is. ATTRACTIVE PEOPLE ARE EASY TO LOOK AT. That's literally it. It's literally the exact same reason why 90% of Hollywood actors are built like Greek demigods... THEY ARE EASY TO LOOK AT. Yet no one mentions that, because the critics have no power when it comes to Hollywood, but they do have some degree of power over videogames.
Not only that, but video games are rarely parallel to reality. Characters in games are typically fantastical and unrealistic; so of course women in games don’t look they do in real life. Neither do the men

Eventually the free market will reject it. People are already rejecting it tbh most of these games with intentional uglification of characters for "realism" are not selling well. That means both male and female gamers have rejected it unanimously. If it really appealed to the female audience like they claim then why are women not buying it lol.

Yeah we don't like ugly characters so what? Games are meant to be for our own fun and escapism. If ugly characters are not selling that's clearly a sign for videogame studios to stop pushing it and heed what the consumers actually want. Cuz most of the time these studios *exclude* any and all kind of attractiveness to promote some kind of agenda and make all their characters extremely ugly. I kinda agree with that. It’s very dependent game to game but I tend to go towards female characters for that reason. For example in Skyrim I tended to do more male characters than female because I think the heavy armors look better on a male model and I tended to use heavy armor often in my playthroughs. And on the other end of that would be something like cyberpunk, while I have the same numbers of male and female playthroughs the female ones I’ve played way longer in on average. I just think that the female model looks good in so much more of the streetwear than the male one. I just love customizing outfits, it’s something I do way too much sometimes.
I agree. And they just have more options almost always. I find both men and woman attractive but I always go for the female character if I have a choice.
For me personally. Making a character that looks like me, completely ruins the immersion for me. To me that's the equivalent of someone poorly photoshoping in a picture of me into a movie and expecting me to be immersed
A lot of players play for a fantasy. They don't want to be reminded of the ugly people in real life, and how ugly they themselves might be. That being said, it never hurts to have the option to be ugly. One person will always see Wario in smash bros and be like "That's me. I'm the gross bastard. Hell yeah." It's being forced into that sucks. The same reason being ugly irl sucks.
Well, we don't really need the option to be ugly specifically, just need details character customisation. With that we capable enough to making the most hideous looking creature imaginable.
In horror games or survival games with basic customization I just make a combination of Walter White and Braum (Project zomboid, Terraria and my first playthrough of MHW). In games with HEAVY customization like Code Vein I just make whatever female look I like at the time, like a Vampire Mistress or a rough-looking adventurer
I love when someone says: "Not all people in real life are model-level attractive" Like, no shit Sherlock, but dragons ain't real either. Geez, it’s almost as if attractive people **attract people** ask any art professor, hell any art historian, and they will tell you the exact same thing people create art off of things that are attractive to them. That is why the vast majority of art is of women because men like looking at women, women like looking at women, and if you swing the other way, 90% of the time you still like looking at other women. Seeking out attractive Art, is what video games are, does not make an individual creepy.
He says his friend always made 'very well-endowed women', but I dunno how much I believe that. What games was he playing where the sliders ever reached 'very well-endowed'? Dragon Age Veilguard can barely get an ass-slider that goes beyond 'pancake ass' and very few games, especially western games, were much better even in the past. Occasionally you get a bust-slider that can take you just above a D-cup but even now I have yet to see a slider that can handle the weight and shape of butts or boobs getting bigger without it being a lazy 'increase scale' job (outside of Illusion or KISS games, obviously) What I'm hearing, is that said friend maxed out the sliders, but was realistically playing with a 'medium' in every game.

because humans seemingly have the intrinsic need to go way overboard with everything were doing. might be evolutionary since being better at hunting than the next guy gives you more perceived survival chance and since we realistically can't say what our objective chances are, we take the next best thing we can to measure our chances. look at shock journalism for a modern example, if being shocking in your reporting takes away from the other publications and gets you the attention, being more shocking than you takes those views away again. this leads to people being more shocking to get more views until you can't top it anymore then it swings back, first slowly then ramping up faster the same way it did before it turned. This also happens to movements and all kinds of trends.
Female here... I make male characters. Big, muscled, tall, deep voiced dudes. Same argument. I don't care to watch a girly trip through the woods. I don't want to listen to high voice yells. I've played games with a lot of dudes. Sure, some play as gals. But the dudes... that play as dudes... have almost always... built the single most hideous creature you have ever seen. The proportions are... so wrong. The head is tiny. The ears are huge. His armor is pink and yellow and has some kind of animal head mask. On purpose. That's important. They made. The ugliest thing. On purpose. I have never. Never ever. Seen a woman do the same playing a female character.😂

Yeah, like it's soooo strange that people in general like to look at something beautiful... I'm a woman and I'd prefer my characters in games to be attractive. Men or women, it doesn't matter.
real easy solution for this comment... turns out people just enjoy seeing nice things, and when you are expected to pay money for something that doesn't look nice, and in fact looks like people ACTIVELY tried not to make it look nice... it will be avoided in favour of more attractive things/games/movies/etc
I'm average looking at best, but by all means, let me put myself and my averageness on display for an entire gameplay, rather than taking the opportunity to be someone completely different from myself and have someone beautiful to look at while also getting a very different gameplay experience than I otherwise wouldn't get. Yet no one mentions that, because the critics have no power when it comes to Hollywood, but they do have some degree of power over videogames.

Why are only men criticised for having fantasies and liking attractive fictional characters??? Yeah we don't like ugly characters so what? Games are meant to be for our own fun and escapism. None of these characters are super sexualized and they're some of the most beloved characters in gaming. They're interesting characters with good character design. Are they pretty? Sure, but take a look at any popular male character. It's usually a handsome dude. Off the top of my head, let's take Desmond Miles/Altair/Ezio, for example. Why is it commonplace to shame people for likening attractive people .
I had some friends who would have their brains shutdown when they met attractive women, and it led them into some really awful relationships. The tendency of being easily attracted by good looks is at the very least not an advantageous trait. Same goes for videogames too, just look at how much money waifu gacha games make. Liking attractive people makes you easy prey.
Women playing games do the same thing.
We like attractive actors in movies, we literally look for attraction in our partners. Why is the line suddenly drawn for video game characters for some people?
I believe, and I could be absoutely 100% wrong and probably am, I remember the late Totalbiscuit or someone on the Co-optional podcast saying something similar
Because people play games and people do not like to look at unattractive people as much. That is a fact, you can argue you are not that way, and I would call you a liar because you are lying.
That was always my reasoning for WoW characters. 15 years later I realize “Why would I want to RP as myself, I do that every day”
People care about attractive characters because WE LIKE LOOKING AT ATTRACTIVE THINGS. Nobody cares about art that looks like garbage and we prefer looking at attractive people. That is all of humanity.
I think wanting hot women and hot men in games has the same reasoning as wanting your warrior to be muscular, your Wizard to be smart, your assasin to be a parkour master. Our bounty hunter to be charismatic. We want these fictional characters to be cool and attractive beacuse GUESS WHAT.... PEOPLE ARE ATRACTED TO ATTRACTIVE THINGS

I understand not every character has to be designed to be sexy or attractive, but there should be at least some level where your characters are at the very least appealing to look at, and I feel some studios don’t realize that making your characters ugly is not good character design.
Mr freeze is a good example, he’s not supposed to be attractive but he looks really good and badass In Arkham City, he has a good character design, while Mrs Freeze in SSKTJL just looks really damn ugly and unappealing, and yet the first one is an NPC and the second one is playable

Occasionally you get a bust-slider that can take you just above a D-cup but even now I have yet to see a slider that can handle the weight and shape of butts or boobs getting bigger without it being a lazy 'increase scale' job (outside of Illusion or KISS games, obviously)
What I'm hearing, is that said friend maxed out the sliders, but was realistically playing with a 'medium' in every game.
The irony being that the comment saying ‘touch grass’ was made by a moderator.
The real question is “why make an ugly character when you can make a good looking one?” “Why get a C when you can get an A?” “Why dream of being broke when you can dream of being rich?”
Someone gets it thank god
The question should be, why do you use an attractive video game character as a form of escapism for your own life?
The other real question is "why do all the ugly characters seem to always be female"? Sounds like sexism to me.
@@malekat8539 well I look good, hell I think I look better than most of the video game characters and I still want game characters to look as attractive as me. You can like it or hate it but it exists and it ain't never going away.
@@malekat8539It's not even a question about escapism. It's just that people prefer to look at attractive characters instead of an unattractive one. It's that simple. If I replace the entire cast of the Avengers with people with the same acting skills, but not the physiques and faces, would you still watch it? Why the hell do you think the entire Kpop culture has so much shit with plastic surgery in the first place? In the end, the majority of people like attractive people, and that's it.
10 or so years ago, developers were fixated on hyper-sexualizing female characters. Now, it’s the opposite - motion capture women, then make them far less visibly attractive. This is a legitimate complaint that detractors feel the need to disregard and gaslight. I’m all for games not doing the former anymore, but what agenda does it serve to consciously make women uglier?
because humans seemingly have the intrinsic need to go way overboard with everything were doing. might be evolutionary since being better at hunting than the next guy gives you more perceived survival chance and since we realistically can't say what our objective chances are, we take the next best thing we can to measure our chances.
look at shock journalism for a modern example, if being shocking in your reporting takes away from the other publications and gets you the attention, being more shocking than you takes those views away again. this leads to people being more shocking to get more views until you can't top it anymore then it swings back, first slowly then ramping up faster the same way it did before it turned.
Games played in the first person perspective: I'm the main character, I'll make myself.
Games played in the third person perspective: I'm the one controlling the main character, and I'm gonna be looking at them, I'm gonna make it nice to look at.
It's really not that complicated! lol
But at what point does it become disrespectful or perverted?
