  • Hiroo Onoda was the last of a dying breed - he fought for Japan in World War II in the jungles of the Phillipines for nearly 30 years after the war's end in 1945. After his surrender and rescue in 1974, he returned home to a Japan he no longer recognized.

    My uncle, a US army soldier, was shot by a Japanese sniper in the Philippines after the war had ended. My uncle was just waiting to be returned to America, and reunited with his wife and the baby daughter he’d never met.
