    Nike you are such a dear. The combination of your true grit AND your beautiful personality embodied in your genuinely infectious smile is soooo attractive.
    This coming from a 68 year old grandpa with 9 grandkids (who is is NOT hitting on you) who has been sailing for 48 years and back living aboard s/v ...Waves
    It is heart warming that your parents will be able to see you aboard s/v Karl for the 1st time in 3 years.
    Blessing to you all! s/v ...Waves

    After all the videos, you and Maria seemed the most happy and having the most fun on this one. Don't get me wrong, you are always happy and having fun, but it seemed like a lot more this time. A great quality you have--making a bad situation into something better. That's why your channel is my favorite.

    I learned from the discussion in this video. Thanks. "close to land gybe"! Love the excitement! Love "we're not a ground! we're still afloat". Just another learning experience, to make Nike a better sailor.

    A sign of a true sailor, no motor assist, just the wind....or not enough, but getting to your destination regardless.

    Really like your adventure, have seen all of your episodes twice, got tears in my eyes when you stated that your parents are coming for a visit. I could tell that you are looking forward with excitement for their arrival. Keep up the excitement! Sailing without engine is a terrific challenge.

    Nike, you and Maria seem to be such a compatible crew. Will she be sailing with you across the Pacific? Good luck on quickly raising the funds for you new engine. May I suggest you might want to think of getting a RIB and an outboard as well. Being able to employ the tender to pull or push you out of a difficult situation has its advantages. It would even help with using the two anchor system to pull you further off shore. I love how creative you and Maria are and how you handle things in a relatively calm manner. At the same time you were really lucky that a terrible storm and high seas didn't stir up while you were so close to shore. You got lucky this time, best to plan a better fall back position that doesn't put Karl at risk any time in the future. Good luck. Give your mom and dad a big from all of your sailing fans.

    I crewed on a 30' Columbia that the engine was down and we were sailing her out from the dock. Pretty tricky stuff and you have to have the wind and currents in your favor.

    Had a similar issue, engineless, with my sailboat a few years back. Had trouble getting through a pass with strong current. Got some help from motor boaters. Made it to our destination after two days but as we approached now the winds picked up to 20 knots right from the dock. So we had to sail towards with enough speed to make it but ad suddenly stop on the dock. Fortunately I had lots of crew. Good learning experience.

    In those thrilling days of Yesteryear, before auxiliary engines, they would put the "Jolly Boat" over the side and row, row, row until the vessel was out of danger and caught the wind. :-) the Old Coastie.

    just a thought. .. I have been studying converting my boat to an electric motor. It might be cheaper. I don't know how much room you have for additional batteries and solar panels to keep the batteries charged but you may want to study this option. I also know your videos are not in real time so you may have already solved your motor problem. I have to say of all the sailing channels you are the most real because you are about sailing not just a travel log. I love and respect what you do.

    Great video Nike. You did well getting away from shore. I would have done the same. If there is help around, why not use it. He would not have minded. Don't worry about the negative comments. Easy to comment from a computer on shore. A great adventure - you will look back at this with much fondness when you are older !

    Having also sailed the Pacific in a small boat, I like your videos and the fact that you do so much on your own. Great job! By the way, it's called a "staysail" on the staysail stay and with it you have a "cutter" rig.

    I like Maria's idea of kedging off with 2 anchors.... yeah would take a long time but... it would work. I vote for a outboard as a backup. Great video as usual. I'm sure you have one already but the Beta diesel are well rated.

    Just think, not many years ago sailing ships didn't have fuel burning motors and did just fine. After you get the hang of it you rarely ever turn that noisey thing on again. I never use mine even for docking.

      Many of them crashed on rocks and were destroyed too. Anti engine people never want to admit that boats with engines are safer.

    ahoy Nike! Learning to sail off the anchor without an engine reminded me of S/V Pestilence in the great documentary Hold Fast. It's not until you put yourself in these situations without an easy fall back to the engine that you are able to really learn what you learned in this episode. Not just an adventure, but really rounding out your sailing knowledge and skills. Even once you get a new engine installed I think you'll find you're a better sailor as a result of having had these experiences :)

  • @blueskyredkite

    At least you have learned how to do it better next time. You know what you did wrong, you know what you should have done. Nobody died, and you still have the boat; it's all good!
    Do you not have a sail for the cutter stay? That might have been a better option. I have an inner stay on my boat, but it detaches and is stored at the foot of one of the shrouds to keep the fore-triangle clear for tacking. I have a storm sail that will go on it when needed. Is that similar to your set up, or is Karl a proper cutter?

  • @geraldthomas9253

    You seem to be quite resourceful managing to get about without an engine.
    It would appear that Kudos are in order.
    I am glad that you are finally getting your new engine out of customs though, that really sucks that they were giving you so much grief about it.

    Question, could a dinghy with a 10hp motor pull Karl out of that predicament of being anchored just off the beach?

    • @wilfdarr
      @wilfdarr 7 років тому +1

      John C In the end that's what they did. For sure the easiest and quickest answer. But they also could have waited for slack water: Had they waited 3 hours the current would likely be near slack water and they wouldn't have had the trouble they had. Another 3 hours and it would have been running the opposite direction. With just a row boat they could have kedged their way out as well if they had gotten in really tight (where you walk the boat out using 2 anchors) but this is tedious and only necessary if you really bunged it up. More than one way to skin a cat.

    • @WhiteSpotPirates
      @WhiteSpotPirates  7 років тому +3

      John C the current wasn't actually running straight into the bay but sideways and the problem was, that winds were getting less and less the longer we waited. As u could see, after we made it out we could sail a tiny bit and then were just drifting for quite a while. It was a tricky decision to take. Also because Maria had to get back to her boat so we could not wait for two weeks for better weather unfortunately.
      Plus, we had seen the little panga close by and were debating that worst case we ask him for a tow out. But we wanted to try it by ourselves first.
      If there had been more and more steady wind, then I totally agree on waiting for slack tide for sure.
      And also as u said, plenty of ways to skin the cat for sure 🤓
      Ahoy, Nike & Karl
