    I talk about the books I've read this week. Is a movie ever better than the book? Can you answer all prompts with a single book? I recommend the movie "American Fiction."
    Books mentioned:
    The Turn of the Screw by Henry James
    Carrie by Stephen King
    Nuclear War: A Scenario by Annie Jacobsen
    The Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane
    True Grit by Charles Portis

    I’m glad you’re enjoying the audiobook of True Grit. I kind of liked the quirks of narrative in Carrie.

      I'd never heard Donna Tartt speak before, but she's got some talent as a narrator.

    I don't watch the ads. UA-cam Premium is worth every penny. I've read The Red Badge of Courage. It is a book that had to be written. Can't say that about The Turn of the Screw, but I did think Henry James was pretty clever with the way he wrote that horrifying novel. I have True Grit on my TBR for next month. I guess you couldn't wait for June on the Range, but neither could I because I've already read Old Yeller and am now reading The Ox-Bow Incident, which I had originally planned for June. No I haven't seen someone use a single book for all prompts. I will look for that movie. Thanks for mentioning it.

      I'm going to give King another try, maybe Misery or Salem's Lot some day soon. If you can handle Nuclear War, it's a bracing read or listen.

      @@JamesRuchala I can definitely recommend Salem’s Lot. Misery is one I haven’t gotten to yet. The Stand is my all time favorite King novel. Nuclear War will probably be one I read in little spurts with happy little palate cleansers sprinkled between.

    Hi James!
    I’m just finishing up Turn Of The Screw. I did a buddy read of the with Michael Romeo (Talks Books). I saw the movie Carrie when I was little, how I sat through that I’ll never know! The Nuclear War sounds interesting. Great video, James.

    Terrific reading week, James. I completely agree with your assessment of Carrie. I felt like a lot of that stuff was tacked on and didn’t really add all that much. I used to teach both The Turn of the Screw and Red Badge of Courage years ago. It became increasingly difficult to teach both….I always enjoy your thoughts on your reading and BookTube in general.

      Thanks, Pat. "Red Badge of Courage" seems to be a forgotten title--I think there was an episode of the Brady Bunch that centered around it, but it's pretty easy to slip into. I can see why it was a popular school assignment--and why it's fallen off the reading lists.

      @@JamesRuchala well, I taught it early in my career. Today, kids wouldn’t read it. Jeez, I thought I knew all the Brady bunch episodes by heart!

    Just your talk about the nuclear war book has left me anxious! I'm in the middle of Portrait of the Lady (a slow buddy read) and enjoying it so much more than I was anticipating! I very much enjoyed The Turn of the Screw but I was under the impression that his longer novels were tedious. I'm not finding that to be true at all.

      I found it hard to stop listening to that Nuclear War book, but it was rather upsetting. It looks like the author has done many interviews that give a good idea of what's in the book if you want a sample.

    As for using one book for a tag, I think I used Jane Eyre to respond to all the prompts of a tag. I'll have to go find it!

    I have read three Henry James and The Turn of the Screw is the one I liked the most. Huzzah for Stephen Crane! How monetized do you have to be to pay for UA-cam Premium out of your UA-cam earnings? About half to a third as monetized as me. And even then it is up to the UA-cam Gods as to how much they pay you per video.

    • @JamesRuchala
      @JamesRuchala  3 місяці тому

      Thanks for the answer on that, Brian. Sounds like I'm a way off from those numbers; and YT will probably change everything about their algorithm and payment by the time I get there. The Crane was a great read.

    The classic Carrie quote: "Three joints were going, passing through the inner dark like the lambent eyes of some rotating Cerberus." And I thought Donna Tartt does a great job narrating True Grit but sounded too young. Mattie's an older woman looking back.

    • @JamesRuchala
      @JamesRuchala  3 місяці тому

      Re that Carrie quote: ridiculous! They say the devil weed was a lot weaker back in the early 1970s, but come on.

    Reading Henry James is like listening to an orchestral piece. If one doesn't like that kind of music (prose) James won't be for them. In high school Turn of the Screw was taught in the honors classes. I wonder if it still is, and if so, do today's teens have the patience and curiosity to understand and enjoy it?
    Henry James appears in Gore Vidal's Empire novel. He was good friends with historian Henry Adams and Secretary of State (and former Lincoln secretary) John Hay, all of whom also appear in the book. Theodore Roosevelt and James can't stand one another and their interactions are pretty funny.
    Ads take up much time and break the narrative in videos. I've had youtube premium for years.
    Have you seen the British movie, Threads? It's best movie I've seen about a nuclear war. "Abandon all Hope."

      You know since I read that book, i've been occasionally dipping into various nuclear war rabbit-holes before backing out in terror. But "Threads" does come up a lot. I'll have to gird my loins and give it a try.
