Actually, the Cherokee XJ first began in 1984 but with a very underwhelming engine, the 2.8. -- 1987 is where the true XJ Cherokee began with the 4.0, they pushed the firewall further into the Jeep to fit the larger engine. The Wagoneer line of the XJ was produced along side the other XJ's. Clock at 9:20. I am very happy to hear that this Jeep is going to continue to be on the road as it's pretty much all complete. The Wagoneer XJ's are pretty darn rare. And also the third brake light was mandated for the Jeep Cherokee in 1994. I only know all this stuff because I've own 4 of these wonderful Jeeps. :)
Everything you said is correct. But I wanted to add a tidbit; the third brake light first appeared in 1985 on certain cars and became mandatory on all vehicles in 1994. Most trucks and SUV's held out on the third brake until it became mandatory.
@@papawnanabubby5005 Still nice. I've read that the 2.8 isn't that much better. I've only ever two 2.8 Jeep Cherokees, one in the junkyard, and another someone tried (and failed) to sell.

ClawBoss, I had a 95 grand cherokee. Loved it. Bought it to play with. Planned to convert to 4wd but somewhere it developed electrical issues, never did get it right. Always there but go looking for it and it would go away until you quit and started driving again then it pops up.......

Yes it is, keep the rust out of it, spray film oil in the formed frame, and coat the under carriage every fall with oil (not under coating), keep a good radiator, in it, oil changed and your jeep cherokee 4.0 will go 400k easy... maybe a lot longer if you take really good care of it.

I had a Jeep just like that it was silver and all. When I bought it. I had the jeep painted black and gold pinstriping put above the woodwork on the sides. That jeep was absolutely amazing! When I had to sell it it had $168,000 Mi on it. The floor pan in the rear driver side was rusted through. That jeep got me through so many snow storms it was crazy. I went into Boston and a blinding snowstorm to pick up my other half who was getting out of work early due to the bad storm. We drove up Route 93 into New Hampshire without any problems at all I just love that jeep! Now after 7 Jeeps we currently have a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland Summit which was top and at the time. Nothing like a Jeep!

One of the best trucks ever made. Had my 1987 for 22 years 260k miles . AMC such a great Jeep. A lady ran a red light and tweaked my tailgate. 2000 sport now with Dana 44 and HP 30 from my 87.
Those 4.0L Straight 6’s never die. We used to have a 98 Cherokee Sport with 220,XXX miles on it until we sold it to some kid who wrecked 3 vehicles in only 1 year. That thing would’ve ran to 300,000 for sure, but most likely now it is in the junkyard because of the kid.
When I was a teenager someone gave me one for free. We poured everything from tiki torch fluid to diesel, premixed gasoline, kerosene in it. It ran for a few weeks like that. When the motor finally died we put it in 1st gear and drove it home with the starter motor.
Hey a couple of things!, I own one of these mines a 1984 so a lil different but the reason it’s stalling is because it has an automatic electric powered choke, they tend to be finicky and go out if you just force the Jeep to keep running and get hot the choke will let more fuel come through and it will idle, also the buzzer is for the open door, seatbelt, key position, wipers and lights so you have to do all that to get it to shut up, hope this helped! :)

Not to nitpick because you know your stuff, but 3rd brakelight became mandatory in all '86 model year cars. Trucks and SUVs may have been later. Love the jeep! What a rare find. It may be the only one of its kind left.
Just finished watching the video, and that is very cool that its going to your sister and you'll be helping her getting it back to its former glory. That Jeep is is amazing shape, and in deed a very rare find in that good of shape.
Save this one! There's very few of the Wagoneer XJs out there. Love the Renix 4.0s, much better than the high output 4.0! Also those tail lights are worth some coin to the right collector. all of the 87-90 4.0L have that sticker on them. The Renix 4.0 uses a metric thread oil filter . The other JEep engines, and most other American vehicles use standard thread pitch oil filters. The oil filters for these things are impossible to find. The only one readily available is an orange fram. Check the ballast resistor on the drivers side fender. You can bypass it. They go bad and cause it to not start. Really nice jeep, looks great with the 4 headlights, well worth saving and glad it's going to someone who will love it. We didn't get the jeep brand in tight hand drive here in the UK till around the mid 90's, and now they sell quite well.
I had a 1988 Loredo 5-speed I loved dearly. It was a great car till I rolled it. The engine was so good it was still running after rolling twice. Love it
Happy to hear that this one lives again. I have seen Jeeps here in alaska go a half a million miles before it would even start to use oil. because it was so little they waited another hundred thousand mikes. My doctor has one and only drives it in winter time or really cold weather, below zero for weeks cause I had it starting so good that it was just a breeze to start. his wife is a paint and polish kinda girl. She sent it out to be painted about five years ago and people will be dumb enough to ask where did you get it at, we want one thinking it is new. JT my doctor is going to give it to his daughter when she goes to college next winter! She is a good driver and has her first car that has some age to it but it shines and looks good and she does her own maintenance on it for about five years now so if you ever get a new rig, you might get it but they are known for hanging on to the old one.All in all they still don't have very many cars/trucks ..... and they are rich!!!

My first car was a 1995 Jeep Cherokee sport. Sold it to a guy who swore he would give it back to me and he ended up selling it to somebody else three months after I sold it to him. Unfortunately I didn’t find out about that until three years later. I miss my jeep so much. That is a beautiful little jeep, so glad you are Keeping it and I look forward to seeing more on it soon.
save save save. super collectible. that is a $4000+ vehicle as is here in New England. the rockers, rear quarter, doors, lift gate are all perfect. They only made the wagoneer limited for a few years before rebranding it the cherokee.
I'm an xj fan. Very reliable. Great engine. I would have reservations spending big money on a resto however....... The compression of the engine sounds great.
Help needed. There is a 1988 Jeep Cherokee XJ Wagoneer 4.0L automatic for sale for $3,500 usd. It has 116,000 miles and the body is 7/10. The current owner recently put $3,000 in repairs exhaust and brake line, battery, whee bearing etc. Is it a good deal?
That's going to make a nice ride. There certainly can't be many of those top-of-the-line Cherokee-body Jeeps left and that one is in very decent shape indeed. It wouldn't take all that much to make that one look like new again, even the front seats should be a relatively easy job to make really nice again...
I think the round key only locks the glove box if it's like my other AMCs. Same steering column AMCused for years. BTW, Iacoca and Chrysler outright lied to the autoworkers at AMC in Kenosha and closed the plant because they only wanted Jeep (which wasn't built in Kenosha) and had no intention of keeping the Kenosha factory in operation to produce Dynasty rwd platform vehicles. Iacoca was already set to golden parachute into retirement from Chrysler by '88 leaving the Kenosha AMC longtime UAW unemployed for years.
So jealous! I want that grill and bumper for my '96 2 door. XJ's were designated "light trucks" and didn't get that 3rd brake light untill 1995. Good luck to you and 'sis'.
My Dad had one. He also had the slow 2.8. It was rebuilt around 100K mostly because it had a leaky rear seal. At 190K, he sold it when it started to leak again and the rust was starting to take over. It was great in the snow.
Kevin Keeney that’s cool man. I think my folks traded theirs off when it hit about 100k. Still ran good. I thought this one was gonna be the 2.8. I was not paying attention to the 1988 at the top. The 4.0 really changed things for the Cherokee Such a great engine. My first new car was a 1996 Cherokee country. They had done away with wood grain by then. But man that was a great Jeep. Had good power I think people would still buy them today. It was such a mistake to stop making them.
When Jeep were Jeeps! I miss when SUV's were boxy. Now every suv looks the same. What a gem! I'd buy this in a heartbeat.

Could not kill that motor and I could not get it stuck in the winter. Miss that old jeep. Drove it to the scrap yard running fine.
Love it
You don't see that many in that decent of shape, it would make a good project vehical or daily driver for someone..
P.s. love you videos Jay :)
I love how they integrated the low fuel light with the AMC-Jeep logo in the fuel pump icon.
Glad someone in the family got it!
That'll be awesome to see more videos on this beauty.
Y'all Have A Blessed Day
Man I'd love to have her, I love that color pallet combo on the interior.
Love XJs. especially early 4.0 ones. i have a 99 tho, which is also awesome.
they also made Grand Wagoneer ZJs, with wood trim as well, i think only made in 92 and 93.
The zj is a chrysler, the xj pretty much amc even though chrysler bought 'em out.... that is why the xj is a way better vehicle than the zj.
joracer1 yeah. xjs are the best.
Blast from the past!!
I hope you take really good care of that jewel you have. Very nice project
i have the same buzzer issue with my 99 ranger. how i get mine to stop is after the key is out, palm smack the ignition switch till it shuts up.
I'm an xj fan. Very reliable. Great engine. I would have reservations spending big money on a resto however.......
The compression of the engine sounds great.
That's is a nice mechanic's special. It needs a power wash, although. If it needs that work you described; it would make a great commuter.
My 99 Cherokee will never leave our family. These things are icons
I just bought a 1989 cherokee xj. The ding to let you know a light is left on or what ever. Wont turn off no matter what unless the seatbelt is on
THIS is when JEEPs Were Made!! Before Chrysler and such...
AMC designed in late 70's by Roy Lunn
Wish I was closer. Would bring her home.
My first xj was creampuff 88. That thing had 370k miles on it, and ran perfectly.
Nice looking old Jeep... I’d love to find one that nice.
Looks like a great candidate for David Tracy to take to Moab next year.
That's in great shape for the year
Help needed.
Very tidy for its age ,a definite one worth saving.
That's going to make a nice ride. There certainly can't be many of those top-of-the-line Cherokee-body Jeeps left and that one is in very decent shape indeed. It wouldn't take all that much to make that one look like new again, even the front seats should be a relatively easy job to make really nice again...
Such a sweet brother .......
My first vehicle was a 1988 Wagoneer. Same red interior, same green carpet on the doors.
It’s 1988 and has POWER WINDOWS?!
Why would someone junk this car? Glad your sis has rescued this gem
Jay if you look at the AMC Ambassador 1967 quad headlights, you can tell that is where they most likely took the styling que for the headlights.
So jealous!
I want that grill and bumper for my '96 2 door.
XJ's were designated "light trucks" and didn't get that 3rd brake light untill 1995.
Good luck to you and 'sis'.
The 94 had them
Dude my parents bought one of these new in 1986. It was so damn slow with that carb 2.8 v6. I mean painfully slow. But it was nice and people loved it
My Dad had one.
It was such a mistake to stop making them.
i had one in dark blue it was a neat car
Nice Little Truck!!!! I want one!!!!!!!!
the look of the engine reminds me of a 12 valve cummins
P77777777 they do look alike I mean it is a tractor motor lol
@@Floreypottery Heritage off the old 232 Jeep engine from 1970's
I like it, love this style.
Flue pump access under the back seat, maybe
Strange No AC
The oil filter adaptor sticker comes from the factory when new not from when you get a new engine.
The sticker was on the block. It said remanufactured. Heat tags only come on remanufactured engines.
My sis has the single headlight version in Australia and she says it's the best car she's ever had :)
Cool Jeep like you said mr. Lots of potential is here.
That jeep is so clean for 31 years old.
I will so follow along if you’re going to put this sweet XJ back on the road!
I love this.
The buzzer sounds like a late 90s GM buzzer
