    I'm a huge fan of Fred's and I completely understand he was a very old school man's man but the guy really needed to learn how to also have a fulfilling family life away from chimneys and steam engines, it's no suprise he went through a few divorces. Go spend some valuable memories whilst on holiday with your kids, not knocking a chimney down.

      @RedBison.
      I feel very similar. He’s a joy to watch and listen to, he’s charming and witty, and it makes me laugh, in some way, seeing him spend a holiday with his family knocking down a chimney, but mostly it makes my heart ache for his wife and kids to think of all the potential time they could have had with him that they missed out on.

      @@TheMountainMongrel If you want a wife and kids you have to dedicate time and effort to them or they will leave, it's very simple. Of course every man has his hobbies and his job but he cant focus solely on those or he will be single in no time. It's not always about a woman "changing" a man.

    I have always had a soft spot for Fred, but my mother hated him with a passion, and I never saw many of his series until much later, since whenever an episode would come on the TV, my mother would immediately switch it off.
    Why did my mother hate Fred? Contrary to many statements, there were many blokes like Fred who emerged from the 1950's, and my father was one of them. Their idea of a woman's place was looking after the house, the kids, the washing/ironing, and waiting on them hand and foot.
    My father, in the Victorian tradition, always ensured that we had a roof over our heads, clothes on our backs, food in our guts, and a holiday once a year, and his passions were steam locomotives, (railways being much in the family), cars, trucks, and the local pub.
    Fred however, did not care for holidays, the finances for which were ploughed into his hobby. He had little respect for much of the modern world, being obsessed with his true passion for steam engines and all things Victorian. I truly believe that Fred was born in the wrong era, or was a reincarnation of a person from the Victorian age who seriously lamented being thrust into modern times.
    I believe my mother concluded that Fred was much the same as my father in many respects, and that was probably the reason for her dislike of him. Maybe she saw much of my father in Fred.
    Pity. I have always considered Fred as a down to earth hard working grafter, in a particularly dangerous profession. I think he made his mistakes, as we all do in life, was somewhat selfish, and could have done more to enhance his marital relationship, but there is no doubt that it took real guts to do the job he did. Like my father, he kept food on the table and a roof over his family's head. Today there are many that would not even do that.
    RIP Fred Dibnah. I will miss your straight forward down to earth talking. Up in Heaven now, working on new steam engine projects.

    I've seen quite a number of videos of Fred Dibnah now. (And I love them.) But whenever there's his family in the video, I feel bad for them. There's never any sign of an emotional connection with his wife of even his kids. When he's driving around the country on the steam engine, it seems he never even talks to the kids. Maybe it's just the way the videos are put together or I need to watch some more, I don't know.
    But I prefer the videos where he's alone with his craft. There he is beyond excellent, absolutely no doubt about it.

      Well, maybe for them, back then it did !
      There is the yin and yang in life, it is absolutely everywhere. Back then in that era the yin and yang was very clear, obvious, natural and people got it. In today's society, where boundaries and roles are very blurred and both sexes pretty much earn the same, and women want equality, men think like you, that the women should work just like the men. Fred was old fashioned, and personally, I prefer it that way. I believe a lot of women would rather go back to how it used to be, rather than turning out like men as they are today. It’s funny how people nowadays wouldn’t dare do this for a living. Then you have photos of people back then eating lunch on a skyscraper construction site.

      If you were true working class and grew up around that time you would understand. The bloke did not have much money , that is why he was driving around in a clapped out ex-army landrover and ate cheese butties for dinner washed down with a flask of tea, no flashy new van and a paninni with fair trade coffee for Fred.Those days were hard. I never went on holiday when I was a kid because everyone was skint . I understand where this guy is coming from . He PAID for a holiday for her and the kids. Instead of spending money on a part he needed he worked on his holiday so she could buy fish and chips and ice-creams etc for the kids with the money saved from the bartered part. My missus grew up around the same time and SHE understands where Fred is coming from and thinks Alison was a moaner... Let her earn little money shinning 300ft up on a wooden ladder THEN she can whine about holidays . You can't compare todays self entitled society with back then . Unless you have lived through that time with no money , no carpets or wallpaper on the walls and relying on a coal fire with chopped trees on it to keep you warm then no-one should snub the man. He worked for a living instead of signing on the dole and staying at home . @msec Ses

    I'd rather do that as a job than be stuck inside a grey callcentre or garish shopping market for 9 hours a day.
    At least you get to use your hands and you get a sense of accomplishment at the end of it, rather than feeling like a chicken in a headset equipped coop every day.
    I'll take the red-headed wife, too ;)
