this is gold! Erica voice amplified only by the street and hard buildings. It must be magical to see her on Royal Street bending her back to belt out the song. National treasure!
Great music and pure talent without any stupid effects. That's the "original" America" as it is appreciated and admired. My compliments, and applause from Europe.
This just so epitomises the 1920's these kids have nailed it for sure just like some kind of ''Back to the future'' accordance has just happened. Love it,,
I challenge any of the big stars of the modern era to stand on a street corner and project, in tune, like Erika in this video. Every member of the band brings something special. This is the basis for so much of today’s music.
I'm so grateful for these wonderful performance videos it seems Tuba Skinny has cooperated with. Too many times young people with this kind of inspiration are herded into a studio and fit into some preexisting category.
Thank you Tuba Skinny Band Members for playing " Back to Basic" Music. No fancy stuff. Just instrumental and a beautiful voice. I try to play along with my Soprano Recorder . Especially on "Going Back Home". I have an Alto Sax, but you've inspired me to take up the Clarinet . I'm in my third week of self taught mode. I'm in the process of cleaning up my Chromatic Scale. It will take time to work out the squeaks, honks and silent puff sounds. But I have the time. I'm still breaking in my Embrocher. I Thank You for your music. God Bless You All. ❤😋
That moment just after 5:36 is so subtly but powerfully beautiful, when Erika sings up to a G# and then the clarinet, cornet and trombone join in, and the guy in the back with the cap nods like saying "Yeah, this is what life should be like". Thank you to whoever recorded this!!!
Yes, YES ! This is the music that changed EVERYTHING ! And my word, what a performance ! It's not easy to "busk" in New Orleans - but you sure do learn your "chops," and that is amply evident in the "sound" of this band. TIGHT and RIGHT ! Too many superlatives to express - I am SO Filled with Joy just from knowing they Exist ! Man.......
Music has no age and that's what's wonderful. I marvel at music that is over 100 years old, and Erika's interpretation is excellent, just like the jazz band Tuba Skinny. A life without music is hell. Thanks, thanks to Tuba Skinny who makes me find my soul of child at more than seventy four years.
You cats can just play outside my window and let me fall asleep to beautiful music. Then come back and wake me up to these beautiful rhythms. I don't ask for much. Glad to see all that brass hasn't gone to waste -- viva la dixie!
Love the way Erika sings, and she blows the notes over the air in a majestic way.... thanks Tuba Skinny and Digitalalexa to share this beautiful music and make my heart happy-- greetings from Chile.
+Ted Ehrhard How about just enjoying the video? Seeing a minute of the lead up to the count off, is interesting to anybody who knows this music. If you were there , seeing this live, would you put on a blindfold and wear ear plugs for that first minute? Yeah, I guess you might.
Erika really out does herself on this Bessie Smith classic. Damn, she's good! And Shaye has the most beautiful tone and phrasing on the cornet. Damn, she's good too! I can see why this has more than 125,000 views.

The whole band is great. I am truly smitten with their authenticity and devotion to the music they so obviously love. Wish I could go see them live! Come to LA!
Saw then at the NC Folk Festival this Sept. They were great. I sometimes forget how log they have been doing this. Many bands of the 1900-1945 period did not stay together as long as this group
I Love Erika and the BAND >Mark just stole my comment below...... kidding ....To be able to project your voice like that is AMAZING ...To get your voice out over a brass band is Amazing all by it self and she has that something ...Casting folks need to take HARD look at her ..Not a whole lot of market for this music now but I love the Whole Band . ......Executive Producer TEM Studios Productions
My favorite jazz band and I love the singer. She should be famous.

the whole group just gets it.
Erika is the real deal alright.
@@mikegee729 Erika Lewis.
This 68 year old American could not have put it better, thanks Max ............
@@omarks Please don't forget Shaye Cohn, who keeps the band together! Compliments to Erica and the others in the band!
12 years later, they are still together, and still sounding great!
Are they still doing these live shows?
Trapped in a beautiful vacuum in time with this incredible band. Erika is a blues angel. I am a happy soul.
Erica is the best blues singer alive today.
Sweet Jesus this girl and that band are as close to heaven on earth as you can get.
Can that lady sing or what? What a voice, great backing band, love their sound. Beats the hell out of most rubbish you hear today.
I second that
Erika is a great singer, but she's just one part of Tuba Skinny. Every member of the band is very talented. It's hardly a "backing band."
Just became addicted to this band. Can't stop, don't want to stop.
this is gold! Erica voice amplified only by the street and hard buildings. It must be magical to see her on Royal Street bending her back to belt out the song. National treasure!
No outlandish light show,no bizarre makeup or costumes, just great music.
Not even a bright sport coat & tie, w/ straw hat ... just ridiculously great music - and only "1 yr. old" at this point ....
True quality doesn't need frivolous decoration!
Great music and pure talent without any stupid effects. That's the "original" America" as it is appreciated and admired. My compliments, and applause from Europe.
Really like the "New-Orleans-Jazz" of the 1920-iger jears, played and sung(?) by today's young people .
Wonderfull !
no twerking! what, no twerking???!!!!
Think of how great this sounds, especially here voice. Then think of how it was recorded: A cell phone in the middle of a busy street. Incredible.
If I were riding by here on my way to work, I would take the day off and stay
You would be happy, but would your boss?
This just so epitomises the 1920's these kids have nailed it for sure just like some kind of ''Back to the future'' accordance has just happened. Love it,,
So much talent with accomplished musicians on a corner street! Erica, Shaye, Barnabus and Kiowa I have been a great fan of your for many.. many years
Wow I’m 56 live in nj just heard this band for the first time I’m hooked love this music, this is one good thing that happen to me in 2020
They are playing in Philly on Aug. 14, 2021. You should come over...
well, in 2021 you got an upvote :)
She has the perfect, and I mean PERFECT voice. IT DOES NOT GET BETTER THAN THIS!
Yup! And NO ****** mike!
Ouais , moi aussi j,adore sa voix .

Эрика лучшая,в традиционном джазовом вокале ей нет равных.
Wonder who the SOB was that broke her heart -- otherwise she couldn't sing the Blues as she does. That is, so we'll...and so truly.
What a gifted singer. She blows my mind. No Amp just power. Amazing.
“Where the Southern cross the Yellow Dog ( the Yazoo Delta )”
Erika is just magic........Gawd knows what the lyrics are.........just love the way she sings 'em.......bloody marvelous!
See if you can find the recording of Bessie Smith doing the song. The Yellow Dog of the lyrics was the Yazoo Delta Railroad.
Erica’s voice envelopes the listener, resounding and soaring.
I challenge any of the big stars of the modern era to stand on a street corner and project, in tune, like Erika in this video. Every member of the band brings something special. This is the basis for so much of today’s music.
Agree,is true
I do too!
Yes, the reasons I am becoming a big fan
Why would you challenge them fake ass jax
Simply the best
Thats one hell of a talented band to be seeing on the street..for free !
Erika Lewis has such a perfect voice for the blues, I❤LOVE IT. Thank you guys for the great music! ❤🇺🇸🇵🇷🎵🎵🎵❤
Thanks! @@fredo1945 👍😊🇺🇸🇵🇷🎵🎵🎵
That voice! No amplifier. Whatta great set of lungs. Perfect tone.
Man but that girl can sing, just so good to listen too
I could not agree more. When I do a search on UA-cam I always look for ones where she is singing. She does a great job and I enjoy her voice.
This is music as it's meant to be.RAW and real!!!!
Esto es lo que esperas y quieres encontrar en Nueva Orleans y helo aquí ...felicidades hermosa banda y cantante.
I didn't even like Jazz until I heard this group. Each member is genuinely talented in their own right 😎
There are many kinds of jazz, but NOLA jazz is the best.
And I love juzz very much, because it has so interesting improvisation!
Don’t you just wish you had half of their talent🥰👏
It’s more Dixieland jazz than it is traditional modern jazz.
@@LouieNeira Truly. As the original.
Young people singing and playing the old songs...so cool!!
Her voice is so cool!! If this band were a cake, she'd be the ICING!!
The best song I have ever listened to, and again, and again,..
The players & vocals compliment each other perfectly !
Walter Schuett
So natural together, vocalist and band. Love this group.
Who needs a microphone when you have a voice like that!
she should be a big, big star, making millions upon millions of dollars with that voice.
Discovered them here on youtube and enjoy them so much that we're planning a trip to New Orleans just to see them.
Long time since I went to New Orleans, but tbc brass band are amazing. Check them out too if they still play 👍
Right on brother - so are we !
some guy yes
We were too, until the virus hit.
And they just get better with time….the best !
Everybody is oozing with talent! Just great!

So do I !
Love this group .🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Oh my! These folks are soul warming...Shaye "leads" the group well but her solos are stirring and excellent...Erika is terrific!
Terrific! This is one of the best contempo bands I've seen on UA-cam. Go, Erika!

incredible, Erka! Great big sweet pipes and so inspired! Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey, Ethel Waters..and more more! wow!
TubaSkinny -I discovered your videos last week and you have got to come to Chrsitchurch New Zealand. Fantastic. Erika's voice is amazing.
Just perfection!
she has a tremendous soul, wondering if that ain't an old one , awesome , multiple thumps up

Glad to see all that brass hasn't gone to waste -- viva la dixie!
How can people just walk by this without stopping?
Yes you wonder what they're made of????
Because they can hear it every day on the streets of NOLA.
this group should be invited to the Danville Kentucky Brass Band Festival. They would b e a great hit.
I'm from Pike Co, but work in Lexington half the time, i would definitely love to see them invited to play, I would be there... BRILLIANT BAND!
What pipes! What horns! What an incredible group!
What I admire about Erica is she sings on the street with great projection and no amp! of course I also admire her voice and singing.
Erika Lewis is an eargasm for me...I could listen to her all day.
Love the way Erika sings, and she blows the notes over the air in a majestic way.... thanks Tuba Skinny and Digitalalexa to share this beautiful music and make my heart happy-- greetings from Chile.

What a fantastic sound they have this nailed.
This is probably the best version of this song one could ever hear. These guys and girls are GREAT!
See what can happen when you defy mama's order not to play in the street!
One of the great classic songs done beautifully.
Thanks y'all.

And Shaye has the most beautiful tone and phrasing on the cornet. Damn, she's good too!

How have not heard of this band until now?!
Even the birds add to the music.
Saw them in Sydney a few years back. Great beyond great in my estimation.
Ah, just so danged good. Sweet!
Don't know how anyone can resist running up and embracing that lovely woman.
I would enjoy listening to this group on the streets of New Orleans. What a treat.
Beautiful and positive girls & guys!
Just discovered Tuba Skinny a week or 2 ago thanks to youtube - these guys are a *National Treasure* !!!
Erica brilliant as always!
oh the singer gives me chills, i love your work so much (Ole Tuba Skinny)
Can't really make out what Erika sings but she is great melodically and with a great rhythm. Should go far with a voice like this. Excellent.
A Bessie Smith song, written by W.C. Handy
Ever since Miss Susie Johnson
Lost her jockey Lee
There has been much excitement
And more to be
You can hear her moanin
Moanin night and morn
She's wonderin' where her
Easy rider's gone
Cablegrams goes off in sympathy
Telegrams goes off in inquiry
Letters came from down in Bam
Everywhere that Uncle Sam
Is the ruler of delivery
All day the phone rings, it's not for me
At last good tidings fills my heart with glee
This message came from Tennessee
Dear Sue, your easy rider struck this burg today
On a southbound rattler beside the Pullman car
I seen him there and he was on the hog
Oh, you easy rider's got to stay away
She had to vamp it but the hike ain't far
He's gone where the Southern cross the Yellow Dog
These guys are getting a reputation as the best band of its kind.
Ronald Fitch I think it’s more that they got that reputation than they are getting.
Best advert for Browns Dairy I ever seen.💃
