I'm at a bit of a loss with this one, folks. There are two things wrong with it but I wasn't too comfortable attempting repairs on either issue.

This was my first vintage receiver I’ve ever owned and one of my favorites. I had it serviced by by Chicago Audio in Chicago and I use it almost every day, I enjoy it because of its simplicity and how nice it looks. It screams 70s more than most receivers. They are considered rare but not that sought after. Long story short, if you want a great vintage receiver for efficient speakers, this is the one to get if you can find one.

Quad was pretty much a Flop!, Started around 1971, Peaked 1973-74 and was pretty much gone by 1978, Good ole classic 2 Channel Stereo is the best! "1958-Present!"

I'm right in the middle of restoring a Pioneer SX-939 that I got last year for 20 bucks but it was a disaster case that was in a Cow Barn that needs total restoration. Lots of hay seed and mouse piss and shit all over and in the unit. When I'm done with that I got a Sansui 3300 I have to restore that I also got cheap 35 bucks but is in much nicer shape than the SX-939. Love your channel I learned a few things thanks.

That stereo was sold overseas on a military base PX. It had a 220v, 110v switch so service members could still use it when they got home. Sansui sold a lot of equipment like this.

The SSN being engraved was so that your equipment was not accidentally taken by another soldier. They engraved their SSN on their valuables on base to not lose them. Lots of guys bought the exact same stuff at the store on the base due to limited selection so it was neccesary to know who owned what.

Just came across this video. The 4-channel modes are designed to play QUAD records and tapes. Some stereo music can produce simulated quad effects, but the rear channels aren't as pronounced, because on the matrix 4- modes produce out of phase information. The Sq and Qs work better in these modes because that's what they're supposed to do. Records that is,quad records. The discrete quad mode is for quad 8tracks ,which requires

That is indeed a rare bird. About 3 years ago my Sansui 9090DB went down so I bought a Sansui QR-4500 Quad to tide me over until I got it fixed. Love that little receiver! On that one it has a "concert hall" setting that's great for live recordings & trippy stuff. Really opens the sound stage up.

A reverb unit also helps achieve that concert hall sound.

What's up Aidan!, good to see you back at the bench. I had one of the Sansui Quads back in the day along with 4 Sansui speakers to go with it, worked like a champ and sounded great. Sold it to my sister in law around 1980, she may still have it. I was stupid young and didn't even know how it worked(technically), looked cool though. Good luck if this one comes back to you.

love it, i am a quad head. I have a Sansui QR 6500, Pioneer QX949A, and QX646, plus an old Heathkit with dual amps. Love the old steelcase desk, heavy beast. I would say have a listen to a good quad recording on a good quad system (properly functioning). Technically you need four of the same speakers. You can get old quad LP's and Tapes if you try. Quarter turn, Basically you are moving the speaker output around in a circle. Front left moves to front right speaker, Front right moves to rear right speaker, rear right moves to rear left speaker and rear left moves to front left speaker. Half turn moves everything again. (if i understand it correctly)

Yeah, it's a weird one. That was a big problem with lesser quad stuff:
Keeping the price down eliminated a lot of features that fancier models had.
The shop I work in dealt with one of this model a few times over the last two years.
It had enough little things wrong with it to keep the shop's owner frustrated for a while.

Sansui system used 'QS' for their quad decoding. There were so many quad systems, that's why it failed. You'd have to get something encoded in QS to get true decoding. Hope this info helps, of your interested ?? Quad is a whole can of worms!! Yes, the board you were not sure of is the decoding QS board...

The two headphone jacks, there used to be quad headphones that had two plugs, two speakers in the headphone for each ear. I remember those.

SSN engraved + Overseas -- maybe military owned, and the SSN was used to help track it when shipped when the person was reposted? Just a wild guess.

When you shift the fase of one channel for 180°, the bass will always suffer because when one driver goes out, the other goes in, and the result is cancelling bass out. Just like switching plus/minus of one speaker.
Did not see you check caps in circuit. You could get an impression of the overall state of them. E.g. in circuit a high ESR is always bad. Since both channels had the distortion, starting with the PSU would be the way to go.

I think this must be similar to the Dynaco Dynaquad circuit. Front speakers in phase, rear out of phase. Not true quad as we know it, just more of a special effect.

Isn't Quadraphonic attempting to decode an encoded signal, so it would sound different? Like enabling Dolby NR on a non-dolby signal. For a non-encoded signal that plays through all four speakers, would one would select 2 channel front + rear?

I get the impression that the resurgence of vintage hifi is starting to wane. I eliminate the obscene looking number butchered into the faceplates by sanding and rebrushing with scotchbrite or filling, priming and painting. I prefer not painting.

That's a great point. It's like how sharing pictures and stuff on social media nowadays can give the not-so-friendly elements of society a surprisingly intimate peek into one's life. Yet...we love having cameras watching us in our homes and microphones listening to us when we talk. The silliness just keeps on keepin' on...
