I just wanted to thank you for introducing me to so many authors and books that no one talks about. Booktube is mainly YA, and your recommendations are a breath of fresh air!😊
Omg another video. It's like holiday when you post. I wish you'd have more time to post. At least when you post it's always good. You're the only one that I like watching even vlogs (I usually avoid those). Basically a booktuber goddess
I read Red Sister and kind of fell in love with it. The writing is gorgeous and the characters feel real, so I couldn’t help but read it super quickly. I hope you enjoy it as well!
Oh my goodness Red Sister is so good! I fell in love with it last year and it's easily one of my favorite fantasy books! I hope that you enjoy it. :) Great TBR for this month!
Was about to read, but then I saw you posted this video and put my book down to watch this XD THAT HEADBAND!! It's so cute, you look beautiful!! Books I plan on reading for May; A Court of Mist and Fury
I have read loads of sci-fi from all eras (probably why I enjoy your channel so much :) and the two that stand above all others are Ender's Game and I, Robot. Both are so intelligent and delve into the ramifications of humans decisions vs aliens/robots. Neither are particularly new, but both are still very relevant. I look forward to seeing your Scifi Basics video!
Currently reading Children of time. I really need to get back into Sanderson too, I’ve so many I’ve not read yet. The poppy Wars out on the 3rd which I’m dying to read! Can’t wait for that book
I started Space Opera and really like it. It takes more active concentration than I usually have to put into a book but the style is unique and funny. Stories of Your Life and Others is amazing! My favorite are the title story, Tower of Babylon, Hell is the Absence of God, and Liking What You See: A Documentary.
My absolute favorite sci-fi series (which is also kinda about the first contact too) is The Expanse. I'm currently watching the new season of the TV adaptation (it's amazing) and rereading the second book on audio (audiobooks for this series are great). Clearly I love everything about this series 😁 Hope you'll love it too!
Em please do a video spoiler review of the Cruel Princr when you're done! I feel like we have the same taste and would like to see if you thought of it similarily to me haha
I read Pandora's Star to get more into the sci-fi genre and I though it was great. As a newbie to the genre (I've read a bit more since then) I found so many of the ideas in this book fascinating. I was about to get into it more but then I remembered you prefer to go into a book knowing as little as possible so I'll just say I though it was worth the read even if it is ridiculously long. Judas Unchained is on my big-books-to-read-2018-list. :)
Read the audiobook to hitchhikers guide to the galaxy! Stephen Fry narrates it and he is AMAZING!! The only way I could get through the book was by listening to it!!
Recently picked up the Alloy of Law trilogy after a break from the Mistborn trilogy. I enjoyed the first one and each one gets better, both with the story and especially the characters. Hope you get to it and enjoy it! It's more comical and lighter than the 1st trilogy.
Those ears are adorable! 🌸 Definitely going to try and get through the Secondreach trilogy this month. I bought it at christmas and have yet to tackle it. It has so many mixed reviews. I'm anxious to start, but I'm desperate to give my opinion. After seeing the film annihilation and LOVING IT, I am now desperate to start. I might also try to finally get round to the Power as well. It's been on my tbr for too many months now. Also thanks for the heads up on Altered Carbon was considering that. Might just try the series.... I might also finally tackle the Man in the High Castle. You've really put me in the mood to tackle some more classic sci-fi and after hearing you mention it and my dissertation supervisor rave on and on about it. I borrowed it from my library and might give it a go. Smart spiders!!!! That also sounds great, will definitely consider picking that up!
Hi Emily, I love your videos and am relatively new to following book channels. I work at a public library in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Since you requested good alien first contact books, I wanted to recommend (perhaps you've already read it) The Midwich Cuckoos by John Wyndham. This is a short novel and was written in the late 1950s, a classic. It's weird! I think you would enjoy it.
Will be reading Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepety and hopefully Winter by Marissa Meyer in May. I might even be able to start The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane by Lisa See as well.
I notice that you enjoy fantasies and thrillers. I just finished reading Fated Paths by T. A. T. Kulisch, and it is a little bit of both. I laughter and cried and held my breath. Though this is a debut book that was released early this month, I think you would really enjoy it.
I picked up Pandora's Star at the end of last year and I had no idea what it was about. I was weary about the page count too but it honestly didn't take too long to get into and it goes pretty fast once the world building has been established. Overall, it was a really enjoyable read and I ended up ordering the second book as soon as I finished the first. I think you'll like it because it definitely has some interesting scifi elements.
Interested to hear your thoughts on Red Sister because it's been on my tbr since it came out. Also, If you're looking for a fantasy with a kick-ass female main character I'd highly recommend Nevernight
That's soooo many. Holy smokes. Im hoping to get through 4 for May. Starting with An American Marriage, the The Hearts Invisible Furies, Poor Things, and Scythe. Also am finishing up audio of the Lonely Hearts Hotel.
One of my favourite sci fi books is Little Fuzzy by H. Beam Piper. It's about a corporation mining on a planet until a worker finds a creature that may or may not be sentient. It's a little dated but John Scalzi has done a retelling which is just as good called Fuzzy Nation
I've seen the movie Contact and I think it's a good movie and the ending just made me feel all sorts of emotions, it was definitely unexpected. I hope the film is true to the actual story in the book.
I loved Lock In, a murder mystery with a cyborg-like protagonist, but first you might want to read the free prequel story "Unlocked" to get the background about the Haden syndrome.
If you end up liking "Space Opera", I would recommend "Road to Mars", by Eric Idle. Yes, the same Eric Idle of Monty Python fame. Read it last year and loved it. Of course, I've already read and really enjoyed "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy", so I knew it was going to be a fun read.
I'd love to see your recs for readers just getting into Sci-Fi. Like a 'Sci-Fi For Beginners' video. So far I've purchased Dark Matter. And I'm looking to purchase Change Agent by Daniel Suarez, Everything About You by Heather Child, and The Three / Day Four by Sarah Lotz which also lean towards adventure/horror.
Rendezvous with Rama is great...highly recommend...also by Clarke is 2001: A Space Odyssey, which is also great!! I also recommend Blindsight by Peter Watts, and Lilith’s Brood (aka the Xenogenisis series) by Octavia Butler for first contact stories! Always love watching your videos...Happy Reading!! :)
You got a great selection of novels there. I've been wondering about Pandora's Star too but like you lengthy books have always been a no no for the same reasons as you. I've been recommended Steelhearts by Brandon Sanderson and will be giving that a go this month, May. Another lengthy book but been told its fantastic. Great video.
BookswithEmilyFox Thank you for your reply and letting me know. Since leaving my first comment I've rejoined Audible and got this as my first free book. I'm going to set the speed of narration higher and see how I go. Is this classed as cheating do you think lol. Thks again for your reply. Love your channel. I may be doing booktube videos of sorts myself soon. Going to check out some of your most recent videos now. I hope you have a great weekend.
Hi Emily. How are you doing? Thanks for another great video. I have been reading a lot of big books just like you over the past couple of weeks as well. I am currently reading the third book in the gentleman greatcoats series by Sebastian de Castel which is called Saints blood which is so far has been really good. I am hoping that I will get the chance to finish the fourth and final book which is called tyrants throne probably within the month of May or June. Also to be a little bit random I got in the mood to listen to the audio book Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry I think this goes under the heading of classic books that or not available to listen to when I was younger and so I'm kind of educating myself by reading them now as an adult. I have been trying to assign myself to listen to classic books that I never was assigned to read as a child because back when I was little they did not have a lot of audio books available and so now that they do I'm taking advantage of that. I have only read the first book in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series but for some odd reason even though I found it to be very funny I just want up never getting into the second book and wand of getting distracted by something else. I hope you like the books you picked out for this month. I am also trying to work on the light novel series A Certain Magical Index that the anime is based off of. I am on volume two and so far it's making the anime make a lot more sense. I will have to let you know what the whole series is like once I get to listening to them on my Kindle Fire which may take a while because it consist of I think about 16 volumes. Happy reading
Sphere by Michael Crichton is a great sci-fi, his books can be hit or miss for me but this one was a hit for sure. Also, Sand and Beacon 23 by Hugh Howey. People always talk about his Silo series, but I think these other two are more satisfying.
I have Pandoras Star, I think I may be trying to read this also. I don't get too much reading time lately but I'll give it a go. As for Favorite Sci Fi, I don't really have a favorite but a couple I have enjoyed are The Prefect by Alastair Reynolds, Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson & Company Town by Madeline Ashby.
I heard the Cruel Prince had that instant romance, sexist “you’re not like other girls” in it. When I heard that I was like oh Emily would hate that book so I’m surprised to see you reading it. Let us know what you think 😊
The Mote in Gods Eye by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle is a good First Contact Novel In the movie of Contact the main character is played by Jodie Foster I'm assuming that the main character in the novel is also a woman I dont know if you've read any other Scalzi his novel The Collapsing Empire was my favourite novel of last year I'm not sure if it would count as a First Contact novel its more like a second contact novel but The Ophiuchi Hotline by John Varley is one of my fave novels
How do you read so much? Do you read really fast? I am the SLOWEST reader😞. It takes me forever to get through one book. Do you have any tips for reading faster?
I recently read the Cruel Prince and I surprisingly enjoyed it, I don't often love new hyped up YA releases as much as everyone else and there were some things I found a bit cringy but I still couldn't put it down, it kind of felt like a guilty pleasure read haha. But I do love faerie stories and fairytales so I don't know how you'll feel about it. Now I'm finally reading The Way of Kings, I've always been intimidated by it but I'm already more than half way through ! I mean it's Brandon Sanderson so no surprises there xD (btw you look way too cute in this video !)
you inspired to read again ! I've had the biggest reading slump for a year and a half (and by reading slump I mean no reading at all, even for uni...oops) but recently I've been rewatching all of your videos and it motivated me to read again. I've read a graphic novel (not impressive ikr) and now I'm picking my next book, which will be something simple like a young adult dystopia to put me back on track. anyway, I adore your videos and your choices in reading, have a nice day Emily! xoxo
Dont dnf the cruel prince once you start. Some of it is soooooo "tropey" but the ending is worth it and im really looking forward to see where the story goes. Also, if you havent read it i recommend stranger in a strange land. One of my favorite classic scifi's
I'm not sure I'll ever read that book, not after seeing that quote from it "Nine times, out of ten, if a girl gets raped, it's at least partly her own fault." Nope, can't do it. :/ I'm definitely hoping to enjoy Cruel Prince tho!
BookswithEmilyFox wowwww. . .you know its been like 7 or 8 years since i read it andi dont even remember that. . . Now i have to reread, i hope it was just to make the world seem more um . Shitty and disconnected and nothing more. Damn!, lol
I finished "Contact" by Carl Sagan a week ago, so I'm excited to hear your opinion on it. I remember loving the movie as a kid (haven't watched it in years though) but the book is totally different due to its aim telling about a possible first contact scenario in a more or less scientific way instead of being an entertaining Zemeckis film :D basically, I'm torn between the two adaptations of the story and would've liked having a melange of both of them.
Random question but I read Dark Matter by Blake Crouch per your recommendation and loved it. Do you have any other sci-fi books you recommend for people who aren’t normally sci-fi readers? I think I put All Our Wrong Today’s on my list from your recommendation but looking for others. Love your videos Emily!
I actually posted a TAG and a discussion (library) video this month which is more than I usually do! I sadly only have a limited amount of time to film videos on this channel and I've explained in the past why I wanted to wait before doing more tags and fav videos - basically I hate when people repeat the same 5 books over and over again. I've announced I'm planning on doing more now that I've read enough books!
I just watched the season finale of The Magicians and .... it's so exciting! The whole series is weirdly addictive, even though you often hate the characters and the stupid things they do. They also have moments where you love them though (some of them) sooo..... I hope you'll enjoy it when you get to it, and in the meantime I hope the books are good :D
Also if you haven't read it yet, check out Kindred by Octavia Butler. It's about a black woman from the 70s(?) that goes back in time to the slavery days. She has to make sure that this one slaveowner doesn't die because he's her ancestor and if he dies, she won't be born. It's a heartbreaking story but also so good.
BookswithEmilyFox Parable of the Sower is good too but so freaking brutal! It has all sorts of trigger warnings lol I'm currently reading its sequel, Parable of Talents, though it's not necessary to read it. Sower ends in a good spot, and Butler died before completing the third book in the series. While talking about Butler's work, have you heard of her series Lilith's Brood? It's about aliens coming to Earth after a nuclear apocalypse. I have mixed feelings on the second book and hate the third book, but the first one, Dawn, is totally worth the read even if it's as a stand alone. I think you'll really like it if you're in an alien first contact kick.
Damn i wish i would be that fast of a reader. I'm reading "Notre-Dame de Paris" of Victor Hugo. Some of your reaviews are making me step out of my confort zone (i don't read much of sci fi and now i really want to).
The Magician King is riding on on the plotline similarities with the Chronicles of Narnia. Personally I think I still like the first book best (unpopular opinion though, since most people like it more the more the books progress). The third instalment surprised me most in the series. My big gripe with these books will probably never fly away, but it will probably not even be noticed by most people since it has to do with wordchoice and I'm very specific with that one. Especially since that in combination with the ending did make me feel at least somewhat disrespected and misunderstood. I'll tell you what the issue was when you're done, since it might otherwise spoil you. I can say the phrasing and vibe had to do with it, quite a bit.
Great video! Maybe this is a stupid question but have you read Ender's Game? I thought that one was really cool! I am currently reading Elantris because you recommend Brandon Sanderson all the time and i love it so much.
Marthe Blin Je sais pas! Je veux lire Mistborn par Brandon Sanderson mais je suis très occupé parce que j'ai mon examen français et examen anglais pour université donc cette je n'ai pas quoi je vais lire actuellement en mai ;;;
I just wanted to thank you for introducing me to so many authors and books that no one talks about. Booktube is mainly YA, and your recommendations are a breath of fresh air!😊
I'm glad you're enjoying my channel :)
Can we talk about how adorable Emily looks in this video! 🙊
Tjasa yesssss
Shtap it 🙊
Lord YES !!!
Winged eyeliner on point 👌🏻
Omg another video. It's like holiday when you post. I wish you'd have more time to post. At least when you post it's always good. You're the only one that I like watching even vlogs (I usually avoid those). Basically a booktuber goddess
I read Red Sister and kind of fell in love with it. The writing is gorgeous and the characters feel real, so I couldn’t help but read it super quickly. I hope you enjoy it as well!
I was not ready for the cat ears. You always look amazing but this now is just SO CUTE. ❤️
Cat ears tend to do that :P
Stories of your life & others is one of the best books I’ve ever read! You’re gonna love it
Oh my goodness Red Sister is so good! I fell in love with it last year and it's easily one of my favorite fantasy books! I hope that you enjoy it. :) Great TBR for this month!
I just re-read Red Sister and then I read Grey Sister. They are soooo amazing! I hope you enjoy them too.
THE HEADBAND IS SO CUTTTTTTEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Was about to read, but then I saw you posted this video and put my book down to watch this XD
THAT HEADBAND!! It's so cute, you look beautiful!!
Books I plan on reading for May;
A Court of Mist and Fury
Hitchhikers guide is my favorite book! Thanks for recommending space opera, it sounds great 😀
I have read loads of sci-fi from all eras (probably why I enjoy your channel so much :) and the two that stand above all others are Ender's Game and I, Robot. Both are so intelligent and delve into the ramifications of humans decisions vs aliens/robots. Neither are particularly new, but both are still very relevant. I look forward to seeing your Scifi Basics video!
You sold me on Space Opera, I love Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy! Put a hold on it with my library, will have to wait a while though.
Ted Chiang is freaking awesome! You will not regret this choice.
I found Lock In to be really boring though.
Have a great reading month!
Currently reading Children of time. I really need to get back into Sanderson too, I’ve so many I’ve not read yet. The poppy Wars out on the 3rd which I’m dying to read! Can’t wait for that book
Run is an awesome book! Lock In is great, too. Looks like you are in for a good April!
Contact is an AMAZING book. The movie is not recent at all. It does the book well, but . . . the book is *always* better.
I love how diverse your TBR is! I really want to read the Red Sister too!!!
My absolute favorite sci-fi series (which is also kinda about the first contact too) is The Expanse. I'm currently watching the new season of the TV adaptation (it's amazing) and rereading the second book on audio (audiobooks for this series are great). I picked up The Kind Worth Killing because of your recommendation. Can’t wait to read it (:
I read Pandora's Star to get more into the sci-fi genre and I though it was great. As a newbie to the genre (I've read a bit more since then) I found so many of the ideas in this book fascinating. Read the audiobook to hitchhikers guide to the galaxy! Stephen Fry narrates it and he is AMAZING!! The only way I could get through the book was by listening to it!!
It helps me sometimes to watch/read positive reviews of (big) books you don’t know a lot about so you get more excited to pick them up!
That's a great trick!
Recently picked up the Alloy of Law trilogy after a break from the Mistborn trilogy. I enjoyed the first one and each one gets better, both with the story and especially the characters. Hope you get to it and enjoy it! It's more comical and lighter than the 1st trilogy.
Ive reserved it from my library so hopefully will be reading along!
Yay! :D
rewatching this. I've rewatched at least 3-4 videos of yours:D
Contact is such a good movie!! It is a bit slow but it didn't bother me so I loved it!!
Those ears are adorable! 🌸 Definitely going to try and get through the Secondreach trilogy this month. I bought it at christmas and have yet to tackle it. It has so many mixed reviews. I'm actually currently reading Dark Matter by Blake Crouch and I'm loving it so far. Great video!
I loved the Wayward Pines series & Dark Matter so I'm looking forward to see what you think of Run!
I'm excited! Others seem to have enjoyed it!

I just read a collection of shirt scify stories by Arthur C. Clark and really enjoyed them so I think you will enjoy them as well.
John Scalzi is one of my favourite authors! Locked In was decent from what I recall.
I just picked up space opera but had to dnf due to the poor writing. In the middle of The Oracle and liking it so far. Good luck!
Seeing new videos from you honestly makes me so happy and excited . Just love hearing your thoughts 💕
❤️❤️❤️
I really enjoyed Trust by David Moody. It’s a first contact alien book and I found it highly enjoyable.
Interested to hear your thoughts on Red Sister because it's been on my tbr since it came out. Also, If you're looking for a fantasy with a kick-ass female main character I'd highly recommend Nevernight
Heather White I second the Nevernight recommendation. Gotta love Mia Covere!
I'm currently reading Mistborn (thanks to you ;p) and if I like it I'll probably continue the series.
That's soooo many. Holy smokes.
Im hoping to get through 4 for May. Starting with An American Marriage, the The Hearts Invisible Furies, Poor Things, and Scythe. Also am finishing up audio of the Lonely Hearts Hotel.
Im reading The Cruel Prince right now. Im a sucker for any stories about fae, so I hope it's good!

your headband is so cute!!!!
I'm partial to 2001: A Space Odyssey, War of the Worlds and Day of the Triffids. I've never read Rendezvouz with Rama.

I'm going to read The Book Thief, Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda, and Tess of the Road

I've been recommended Steelhearts by Brandon Sanderson and will be giving that a go this month, May. Another lengthy book but been told its fantastic. Great video.
It might be an unpopular opinion but so far Steelheart is my least favorite book by him! I hope you'll enjoy it, his ending are always awesome!

Pandora’s Star has been on my list since it came out. Maybe I will push myself to join you and finally read it too!
I misread and thought you had written "i will punish myself to join you..." well okay then :P
Hopefully it's not a punishment! haha
I started The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo last night (because you told me too 😜) and I'm already liking it!! 🙌🏼
Yay!! Get the tissues ready... :P
BookswithEmilyFox 😳ruh roh
The Mote in Gods Eye by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle is a good First Contact Novel

I've been hesitating between Pandora's Star and Revelation Space (by Alistair Reynolds) for ages, now I've chosen :D
I'm not sure if you would like or if you have read it before. But I really like Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card.
I'm pretty sure I already recommended it, but The Martian Chronicles are soooooooooooooooo good. And it's first contact with martians.
How do you read so much? Do you read really fast? I am the SLOWEST reader😞. It takes me forever to get through one book. Do you have any tips for reading faster?
I don't think I read that fast but I use any opportunity to read and use audiobooks which helps a lot.
Actually planning a video on the subject!
Great! I will watch:)
I have Lock In on my May TBR too!
Whoop whoop! :D
I've read a graphic novel (not impressive ikr) and now I'm picking my next book, which will be something simple like a young adult dystopia to put me back on track. anyway, I adore your videos and your choices in reading, have a nice day Emily! xoxo
I'm glad you're going back to reading and enjoying it! Nothing wrong with graphic novels :)
Pandora's Star is available at my library so it looks like I'll be reading it too! After I finish the 4th Wheel of Time book.
Yayyyy! Hope we'll both enjoy it :D
BookswithEmilyFox I can't wait to hear your thoughts in your wrap up! :)
I'm definitely hoping to enjoy Cruel Prince tho!
BookswithEmilyFox wowwww. . .you know its been like 7 or 8 years since i read it andi dont even remember that. . . Now i have to reread, i hope it was just to make the world seem more um . Shitty and disconnected and nothing more. Damn!, lol
Speaking of Sanderson and/or huge books, have you read any of the Stormlight Archive series?
You are way too cute in this video! That headband 😍
My TBR consist on finishing the lunar Chronicles series which I'm loving 💜 and I love this look Yas so pretty 💖
Thank you!!
How far are you in the series? I've only read the first one!
BookswithEmilyFox I'm starting cress!, the third once I finish they both die at the end ;)
I really want to read some Sanderson!!!
You definitely should!
Where did you get your headband? My daughter is cat obsessed!!
I'm planning a Beginner's Guide to Sci Fi in May :)
Depends what you like in Sci-Fi since it's a pretty vast genre!
You must be a VERY fast reader! 📖 📚 ❤️😁
So fast, I was hoping I might be able to keep up, but nope! :)
I do listen to audiobooks which helps a lot! So far this month I've read 15 books and 5 of them were audiobooks!
At my best, I read 3 or books a month and I feel so bad about it ! Tips on reading faster?
Omg im almost done with Hero of Ages 😭😍
ooh I'm so excited to see your opinion on so many of these!!
i wish you would film more tags, reviews or reading vlogs, sometimes i feel like we only see TBR and wrap up lately :(
I actually posted a TAG and a discussion (library) video this month which is more than I usually do!
I can't wait to get back to it!!
You should try "Nos amis les Humains" by Bernard Werber ! Quick read but left me a good memory !
I've been looking for it! I do have "parable of the sower" on my shelf!
I was looking at it on BookOutlet! Now I want it!
Damn i wish i would be that fast of a reader. I'm reading "Notre-Dame de Paris" of Victor Hugo. Some of your reaviews are making me step out of my confort zone (i don't read much of sci fi and now i really want to).
Ill also be reading red sister this month!! please get to it, that would be amazing! :D
Loving your lip color. Do you have a video with it being discussed?
Thank you! They're the first two products I mention in this video ua-cam.com/video/h5AHQKXcGGQ/v-deo.html :)
Gosh you are just too cute in this video!
Amazing tbr!
I didn't mind "lock in" but I feel like his "old man's war" series is much better! Enjoy!
Great video! Maybe this is a stupid question but have you read Ender's Game? I thought that one was really cool! I am currently reading Elantris because you recommend Brandon Sanderson all the time and i love it so much.
I read it a few years ago and tbh I didn't love it as much as everyone else... I'm so happy to hear it!! :D
One of the best sci-fi first contact novels is Blindsight by Peter Watts :D
Cute kitty ears XD oh and I'm currently reading the windup girl by Paolo Bacigalupi
Haha oui je passe mon chemin pour le gros livre du mois ^^ Mes lectures du mois de mai seront:
- hyperion de Simmons volume 1 et 2
- l'amie prodigieuse de Ferrante tome 2
- la trilogie new yorkaise d'Auster
Marthe Blin Je sais pas! Je veux lire Mistborn par Brandon Sanderson mais je suis très occupé parce que j'ai mon examen français et examen anglais pour université donc cette je n'ai pas quoi je vais lire actuellement en mai ;;;
The movie of Contact came out around 1995
Where are those cat ears from? I love them!
