Why I'll NEVER cruise on Carnival's old cruise ships again

- Everyone has different preferences when it comes to cruising. While I'm typically not a fan of smaller ships, they may be someone else's favorite. Personally, however, I don't foresee myself booking another cruise on Carnival's oldest ships, and here's why.

Different strokes for different folks......we prefer the Elation over the mega crowds on mega ships.
Sailed the Elation NYE 2023, such a great ship!!!
I’ve been on the Elation twice and enjoyed it both times. If I can remember, I’ve been on the celebration, the holiday, imagination, triumph, and the elation. 6:55
I have been on Elation twice. Would readily go again.
I'm always confounded to hear people complain or categorize things as cons when they clearly could have seen that issue ahead of time by watching YT reviews. The irony is not lost that the negative review is in a YT video. SMH
We have 2 cruises booked on the Elation. We know it’s an older ship and small but it was what fit into our budget and time frame. I can guarantee you we will still have an amazing time!
I have cruised the Elation as well, and after cruising the Magic and then the Mardi Gras, I will never go back, I like about 20 minutes from Tampa, but will drive to Port Canaveral to cruise on the Mardi Gras before I would do a smaller ship ever again. Never got bored, and always something to do, and never felt overly crowded even at full capacity.
I love the smaller ships.
I worked as a massage therapist on the Elation in 2000 and loved it. It was about 2 years old then.
My first two cruises were on the fascination out of Jacksonville over 10 years ago. Ive since cruised on the magic, sunshine and Mardi Gras multiple times but I always found myself missing the small ship feel that I got on the fascination. I enjoyed how little it was, now I’ve got my next cruise set on the elation here in a few months, I’m quite looking forward to it.

Smaller ship due to the bridge clearance
Put it this way, the older the ship, the more shit that falls apart, particularly the engines (or as they now call "propulsion system") and plumbing, which increasingly is ruining peoples vacations. You would never rent a 20 year old car.
I'd rent a 20 yr old reliable car for cheap. Elation is a cheap cruise

If you like your days full of rollercoasters, multiple dinning and other wild things to do, you want to stick with Disney World. If you want a traditional cruise then Elation, was your choice.
Another thing that I have noticed on older ships, Royal Caribbean included, is a foul sewer smell.
Being a plumber, I was curious as to why.
So on a Carnival ship out of Jax in 2020, I kept pouring water into the vacuum toilet in our cabin and sure enough, the seal between the toilet and the flange was bad and water and yucky mold oozed onto the floor.
I didn't report it, as I feared repurcussions from Carnival.
Now you know.
While I have never sailed on the Elation, I have sailed on her sister ship the Paradise out of Tampa three times with a fourth cruise coming up in September,
And I have also sailed on a variety of other ships including the Mardi Gras, and while I enjoyed the Mardi Gras and would sail on her again it was almost overwhelming to be on her, there was so much going on, so many bars and places to eat, shows, events and activities that I was almost going nonstop for fear of missing out on events and activities,
Where the Paradise being a much smaller ship with limited events and activities is a great ship for me to unplug, relax and really enjoy myself on, her, and I get to interact with the passengers and crew more on the smaller ships as well.
First off. I love carnival cruise line.I think. That they do a remarkable job as a cruise lines. Carnival is for a party, budget and family friendly cruise lines. This is what they know for.
I also love all the older cruise ships. Compared to the newer ships. Because, everyone wants on the new ships. Because , they are newer and everyone want to book on them.
So they are always overly crowded. I like less crowded cruise ship. Yes, I love new ship and updates. But, I'm happy with old faithful . If I'm on a cruise. I'm on it to sail to a new place. I never been to before. I dint care about the way I get there or pay to much attention to a ship age. Unless it not been well maintained.
The other add on. I care less about. Specially , if I got to pay for them extra. I can leave them. If I'm already paying 1 k or more to go on a cruise. I think, you being charged 15 a person each time. You want to ride a sea rollercoaster. Is outrageous. On other cruise lines. All those actives are included

I wouldn’t go on carnival ever again. They are still the Walmart of the sea plus I have a rule I would never pay to stay somewhere with a shower curtain
The Carnival Elation was my first Carnival cruise. We had an ocean view room. What most annoyed me the most was the bad smell from the bathroom from day one. The room attendant tried to deodorize the bathroom but it did not help. All 5 days of our cruise it smelled like a cat litter box was in our room from that terrible odor in the bathroom. I believe the lower deck bathrooms are much worse than the higher decks. I will not sail on the Elation again :(
What did you expect going from a new ship to a 26 year old ship? Of course it isn't going to have the latest bells and whistles.
I do prefer the smaller and more laid back ships. I go on a cruise to CRUISE and not to go to 6 flags. But to each their own.
Hard to relax when overcrowded and all of the lounge chairs are full. I don't go to be packed like a sardine in a can like on many smaller ships
Went on Elation last year for the 4th of July, no issues, would go again. Gong on the Paradise in 2 weeks can’t wait!

I’m also not a fan of the older ships in any fleet . I love the different food options and all the different entertainment Venues,I’m a big fan of the oasis class ships on Royal and I’m looking forward to my cruise in Jan 2026 on the star of the seas. The only brand of ship I wasn’t a fan of is the Norwegian Prima. The food was the only thing good about the ship aside from the room. Their venues were small and we had no comedy shows and 2 major production shows. The music in Sid Norman’s was cool but only could accommodate like maybe a 100 people which for a ship that big that’s ridiculous. The buffet area on that ship was also a joke. I’ve been on the carnival paradise,magic,miracle,vista,conquest,
spirit ,Horizon and out of those just didn’t care for the paradise,spirit and conquest. The conquest I was on a 14 day Caribbean cruise. I loved the itinerary that’s the only reason I booked the cruise that and it went to the island of Grenada which is rare.
I've been on the Elation and I liked it well enough...could have been alittle more to do but it was nice for a small ship....I would do it again

Yeah, anything that was built prior to 2009 from Carnival is out of the question for me. Too crowded. People keep yapping about smaller ships being less crowded and ignoring the truth of it. Denial is strong with some.
Last cruise was with my two friends on Elation 10/23. Had a great time. We were 54,60 and 68 at time of cruising. The dinning room food and staff were good, drinks and other offerings were good. My friends enjoyed the casino. Show was ok. Room was very clean and we were upgraded to a larger room. I could see how someone in their 20s would enjoy a larger ship and more venues. However we were happy. Will sail out of Mobile later this year and Miami next year. Jacksonville terminal ramp to ship would be a challenge for people with mobility issues. Staff were helping cruisers with scooters or wheelchairs. Mobile terminal is similar so both my parents will be on scooters to board the ship.

I’m totally in agreement. I absolutely love Carnival. I’ve cruised many of their older/smaller ships. I’ve now cruised several new and Excel ships. I cannot go back. It’s Excel class ships for me from now on. The space, the entertainment options, the dining options, and on and on. To me Carnival finally perfected their cruising experience with Excel class ships 🛳️
You’re better off cruising out of Port Canaveral instead for better and bigger ships.

sweetheart. it's a room you take a dump in. nothing more. surely there are more important things in life.... let alone anything else. so that's #1. #2, yes, you purchased a cheap food item for a cheap price and got a cheap food product. maybe if you weren't so stingy, you'd have access to the greater variety of foodstuffs available. most importantly, it's an experience. you go for the mental reflection and experience of being adrift at sea. do you have any idea how many years of progress and innovation, the effort and pure suffering that went into you being able to whimsically board a cruise ship and spend a few days at sea, only for you to complain about not being able to sit on a cheap $5 plastic lawn chair and sit in the sun like a vegetable you could experience for free right now at home with no effort, cost, or planning whatsoever? i truly think you missed the point of the cruise and the blame does not lie on the purveyor, provider, or operator.
