    music: "Sehnsucht nach dem Frühlinge" (longing for springtime) composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, arranged, performed and recorded by Anna-Maria Hefele
    What you see in this dynamic MRI-recording is the tongue movement in the vocal tract while doing overtone singing and normal singing. The positions of the tongue forms the resoncance cavities which delete all not-wanted overtones in the sound of the voice at a certain point in time, and then amplify a single overtone that is left, which can be heard as a seperate note above the fundamental.
    The MRI recordings were made by Prof. Dr. Bernhard Richter, Prof. Dr. Matthias Echternach and Dr.- Ing. Michael Burdumy in the University Medical Center Freiburg, Institute for Musician's Medicine.
    www.mh-freiburg... - thank you so much for the kind permission to use the MRI-footage in order to share this fascinating singing-insight with the world!
    The team of doctors in Freiburg developed a highly specialized equipment for recording and and also filtering sound in the MRI-machine. This recording is made while using a pre-produced playback on headphones in the really loud MRI-machine while lying on the back.
    A lot of more of very interesting MRI- and endoscopy- recordings of various singers and vocalists (classical singers, overtone singers, yodellers, beatboxers....) are published on a DVD @ Helbling.

  • @DavidMcCoul

    This explains how she does it! At least in part... She essentially makes a separate resonance chamber in the front of her mouth by closing off the space with her tongue. The size of the front chamber determines the pitch of the overtone, while the larynx can alter its pitch independently. Well sung! Also as an opera singer and a biomedical engineer (with experience in MRI research), this video is extremely interesting to me!!

    • @maryvallettakeith6146
      @maryvallettakeith6146 2 роки тому

      I'm also an opera singer. From your perspective, can you see any practical use of this technique when singing opera?

    • @timmiller1
      @timmiller1 Рік тому +1

      I don’t think this is accurate at all. Dominant overtone pitch changes as your tongue moves, but does not need your tongue to touch the roof of your mouth. I don’t think she is making resonance chambers with her tongue, as a tongue likely resonates not at all. I think the purpose of putting the tongue to the roof of the mouth is to dampen the primary tones.

    • @DavidMcCoul
      @DavidMcCoul 4 місяці тому

      @@timmiller1 It seems from the MRI that the pitch of the overtone increases when the tongue is farther forward, and vice-versa. These appear directly correlated. And to be clear, I wasn’t saying the tongue itself resonates, just that it dynamically changes the size of the sections of the mouth, which appears to change the overtone pitch.

    • @DavidMcCoul
      @DavidMcCoul 4 місяці тому

      @@maryvallettakeith6146I’m not certain, though as opera singers I’m sure we both are concerned about resonance, so it’s definitely something that gets us thinking! Maybe it’s worth looking up what songs have been written that incorporate this technique, such as the one in this video. This isn’t too common in Western music but reminds me of a similar technique used in Tuvan throat singing, as exemplified by Gennadi Tumat and Huun-Huur-Tu.

    • @TheYear-dm9op
      @TheYear-dm9op 4 роки тому +3

      It sounds like whistling, but it's not. You can easily proove that when you keep hailing out but without making a tone with your glottis. Then also the overtone vanishes. Since I surprisingly just insta-learned this technique through this video, I can tell. If the tone is still there with airflow but without you making the tone with the glottis, only then it would be whistling, I presume. The overtone is a rather soft/sinusoid sounding thing that seems to come right out of "nothing" from relatively far inside your mouth. It's pretty weird actually when you just discovered that.

    Silly me: First time I watched this I tought "there's the magic, there is a pokemon inside her mouth singing one of the tunes". Now I can't watch it again without focusing on it and laughing myself halfway to death.
    Serious me: Jokes aside, this is some incredible technique. Honestly, I'm amazed. Congratulations for the huge amount of work you did to get to this level and thanks for sharing it with us.

    Komm, lieber Mai, und mache Die Bäume wieder grün, Und laß mir an dem Bache Die kleinen Veilchen blühn! Wie möcht ich doch so gerne Ein Veilchen wieder sehn, Ach, lieber Mai, wie gerne Einmal spazieren gehn! Zwar Wintertage haben Wohl auch der Freuden viel; Man kann im Schnee eins traben Und treibt manch Abendspiel, Baut Häuserchen von Karten, Spielt Blindekuh und Pfand; Auch gibt's wohl Schlittenfahrten Auf's liebe freie Land. Doch wenn die Vöglein singen Und wir dann froh und flink Auf grünen Rasen springen, Das ist ein ander Ding! Jetzt muß mein Steckenpferdchen Dort in dem Winkel stehn; Denn draußen in dem Gärtchen Kann man vor Kot nicht gehn. Am meisten aber dauert Mich Lottchens Herzeleid; Das arme Mädchen lauert Recht auf die Blumenzeit; Umsonst hol ich ihr Spielchen Zum Zeitvertreib herbei, Sie sitzt in ihrem Stühlchen Wie's Hühnchen auf dem Ei. Ach, wenn's doch erst gelinder Und grüner draußen wär! Komm, lieber Mai, wir Kinder, Wir bitten dich gar sehr! O komm und bring vor allen Uns viele Veilchen mit, Bring auch viel Nachtigallen Und schöne Kuckucks mit!

    Komm, lieber Mai, und mache
    Die Bäume wieder grün,
    Und laß uns schau dem Bache
    Ob kleinen Veilchen blüh'n!
    Wie möchten wir doch so gerne
    Die Frühlingsroten seh'n,
    Ach, lieber Mai, wie gerne,
    Durch wir sind spazieren geh'n.
    Durch wir sind spazieren geh'n.
    Um Schnee an Wintertagen,
    Da hatten wir unsern spaß,
    Und wann mein schlitte fahren
    Auf so mal pudernass
    Am Abend sangen wir Lieder,
    Und spielte manche Spiel.
    Ja, selten uns geschichten,
    Und taten was uns gefielt.
    Und taten was uns gefielt.
    Doch ist wenn die Vöglein singen,
    Der Kuckuck ruft im Tag.
    Dann sind wir frohe springen
    Beim ersten Sonnenstrahl.
    Und überall im Garten
    Kehrt neues Leben fein,
    Lass uns nicht länger warten.
    Komm lieber Mai stell dich ein.
    Komm lieber Mai stell dich ein.
    Die Mädchen und die Buben
    Folgt ungeduld im Herz.
    Sie necken sich und machen
    So manchen dumme Scherz.
    Die Fädchen gehen spasieren
    Im dunklen mädchen Wald
    Was kann denn da passieren,
    Warum, wieso und deshalb?
    Warum, wieso und deshalb?
    Drum lieber Mai komm mache
    Die Bäume wieder grün,
    Damit wir an dem Bache
    Nach blauen veichen seh'n.
    Bringt alles mit was das Herz begiert,
    Wir öffnen dir treu und stört.
    Komm, lieber Mai, wir bitten dich sehr,
    Und danken dir dafür.
