In the 60's, this album was one of my father's favorites, a night trumpeter from Rio, Brazil. It was the great jazz reference of my childhood. My brothers and I listened to these recordings so much that Brown and Donaldson's lines sounded like a lively conversation with us. That was amazing!

I recently heard the recording of the concert in Hamburg with Lou Donnaldson, Art Blakey, Kenny Drew and a yong, maybe local, very good bassplayer. It's was like a visite back to heaven. It had the same drive as the old recordings from Birdland. Wonderful!!!

Lou Donaldson is still alive at 96! He retired in 2014/2015, I think. He doesn't make public appearances that much.

These sessions are pure gold, even though Clifford Brown only left 4 years of recordings, he was fortunately decently recorded within those 4 years.
He had some of the strongest chops next to Clark Terry and Maynard.

Magnificent album! And to realise folks (penned on 30/07/21) that Lou Donaldson will be 95 this coming November. This group, which eventually became - The Jazz Messengers - , was the best ever hard-bop outfit, imo. Incredible Jazz folks. So dig the Jazz, dig the crowd and dig that this wonderful gig was recorded!!! G’day & Cheers!

He's now 96, and the only member from this group that still with us.

Wow! Those were the days when Music was played by MUSICANS! Birdland was located on Broadway between 52 and 53street fm 1949 until the early 1960's

When it first appeard we digged this recording until we knew every line in it, the scratches too. It was such an eyeopener and I tried as mad to sound like Lou Donnaldson.

3:13 You can hear Lou Donaldson turn away from the mic for a moment, perhaps nodding to Clifford Brown that he's almost finished with his solo and Clifford's up next. 🙂
