My mantis picked one of my fiddle leaf fig trees as his home while out on the porch and he would never leave through storms and everything.. So he lived free roam in the house for months till he eventually passed.. He ate all the flies and bugs in the house and would always go back to his tree after exploring, he had honey for a treat i never thought i could connect with an insect.. Miss you Milton ❤

Thank you for your comment about non invasive species. Every time I show people my hatched babies, they go on a tangent about how the mantis will eat all the butterflies and hummingbirds and bees.. I know that's not the case. It's much easier for a mantis to eat a cricket/ grasshopper or house fly than to tackle a hummingbird

I have a baby mantis, about 1 inch long and since I have school I can't be there every day to feed her, so I leave a few fruit flies in her enclosure, I have no idea when she's gonna moult so is it a good idea to just leave the flies in her cage?

I'm raising Mediterranean Mantids from birth. A surprising number of them are dying. I think the problem may be their inability to digest food. One just ate a fly for more than an hour and its abdomen doesn't seem to show any food in it. It's like it's not fully swallowing the fly and can't finish eating it, as if it's like a human being trying to eat a hamburger with no liquid to wash it down. I'm in Las Vegas. They've survived 120 degrees and months without rain. I was told that they didn't need to drink any water because they got enough from their food, so I haven't been giving them any water. They don't seem to be molting as often as I had expected. Could lack of water explain their difficulty molting and swallowing?

I took a mantis in for the winter. It turned cold sooner than expected. I thought it was just a young male mantis, only to come home tonight to find that SHE was laying eggs. Kind of in a panic. Please let me know if you have a video about how to handle them after they're born. I don't want anything happening to them, at least to the best of my ability, until I can release them in the spring. If possible, help.
What is the survival rate of the mantis once they hatch? I read somewhere that even though they initially put out 50-200 nymphs but only a handful of them actually survive? If you have any insights I would love to hear them. Thank you for sharing your process.
This is correct. Most of the mantises hatched will die, even if properly cared for. Some may be eaten by their siblings if not separated quickly enough after hatching, some will die due to complications related to molting, and some will just die for no clearly discernible reason. Raising them individually does increase the number that are likely to survive but it still will be only a fraction of how many hatched to begin with. In the wild about 5% of nymphs hatched will survive to adulthood. It is reasonable to expect to double this survival rate if the nymphs are properly cared for.

KUDOZ ! Im a new Mantis Momma 😄, and I'm just learning. I bought about 40 sacks this year, handed them out to Granbaba's, only one Guy wanted them. Baby's 😂. So this week hubby n I, mind you we just put them on the table on the patio. OMG!! Friends are like,,HEY!!! Your tables moving😂.. We didn't know what To do. I dipped pieces of ? Idk, thin rope in water, stretched it, they jumped on, then painted toothpicks w/ Honey.. They were so Wired Up " We had Races 🤣. No, They liked it tho. We Started bringing them to the garden.. Hey Lillian! They start having aggressive and/or cannibalistic tendencies within the first molt or 2 after hatching, depending on mantid species. That can come pretty quickly, so I do not suggest keeping them together for long if you want the highest chance of survival.

Lol, they do not land in their heads. Due to the weight of the rest of their body they will either land on their back, or the bottom of their bodies. If they did land in their head than the mantis would likely die as they are quite fragile.

That could be - more rainfall = more food for bugs = more baby mantids surviving this year. We've noticed more around here, too!

Yeah, it's just a part of what they do. The only way to guarantee it is to separate them out in individual housing (like 32 oz cups) or something similar to that.

Yes, but I’d recommend giving them some variety for additional nutrients.

Mantises are generalist predators and will usually eat anything that they can overpower. If your mantises are still very young lady bugs may be too large for them. If they are larger than the ladybugs however they will eat them.
I wouldn’t recommend it as ladybugs are actually poisonous. Not sure if they could handle the toxicity of their blood.
Hi, I suspended my praying mantis egg after 8 weeks because it hasn't hatched yet and I was unaware that it had to be hanging and now after 3 days it is turning a dark brown/black :( is it dead now?
Unfortunately it sounds like it probably is. If you send us a picture we can verify with more certainty but it is most likely deceased.
Hi, how to you prevent mantis nymphs from escaping, I mean every time I open the container, nymphs just come out of it like crazy!
Providing mantids with plenty of perching spots (small sticks) and visual barriers, as well as providing them with more space, really helps.
joshsfrogsvideos so, any tips about the visual barrier? I mean I can use use vaseline as the visual barrier? It’s works for ants but I am afraid that it will poison them(the mantis nymphs)
Visual barriers, as in hiding places so they don't have to stare at each other. They don't like being in close contact with each other.

Leaving flies or insects in the tank should be fine as long as there aren't an overabundance as that could stress out the mantis. A growing mantis of that size could likely eat anywhere from 1 to 5 fruitflies per day up until it is ready to molt again. At 1 inch, it may be able to start taking larger prey as well, such as 1/4" crickets.

My mantis has a brown spot on her leg and I ignored it but a few days later, the brown spot spread all over her leg and her other legs too, does this mean she's going to moult soon?
Color changes in mantises would usually happen after, not prior to a molt. Have you provided your mantis any calcium over its lifespan? Does she appear to be somewhat limp? There are many things that could be causing what you are seeing but none of the ones I am familiar with are very good I'm afraid.

The diet of my mantis mainly consists of fruit flies, raw meat and superworm meat, I don't know if she has moulted yet, but I think her arms (the one she uses for hunting) have gotten yellower since the first time I have seen her.
If it is still eating fruit flies I imagine it is still pretty young so calcium deficiency wouldn't be all that likely I think. What is the humidity in her terrarium?
@@joshsfrogsvideos5594 Oh! I live in a pretty humid area so I thought it was fine if I didn't mist it, the meat I feed her is sometimes frozen meat that thawed out, so she gets some water from that.
Actually I was thinking you might have too much humidity. Do you have good ventilation for your mantis's enclosure?

Terribilis can mature as quickly as 18 months, but often it takes 2-3 years.

We have had a lot of interest in the Chinese praying mantis from customers who like to introduce these to their yard and garden each year. We would love to offer a wider variety of mantids, and may in the future!
Can u gluegun the stick?
A glue gun should work fine to attach the stick. Just be careful not to drip any hot glue on to the egg case itself as the high temperature could damage the developing mantises or block their exit if it ended up top of the egg mass.

I've never raised a mantis, and cannot realistically house them separately. Not even close. I'm looking to bring them somewhere, like a nursery (though I find that to be an unlikely prospect). It's winter in Jersey and they won't survive outside until spring:(

They have very low survival rates in their early instars so in a short while you will have considerably fewer to manage. If you attempt to rear them you'd want to keep them in separate containers (they will cannibalize each other else-wise) and start them out on D. melanogaster or D. hydei fruit flies.
@@JoshsFrogs thanks so much for responding!! I do want to house them until spring unless I can find them homes. However, aside from some crickets when I was like 12, I've never been a bug parent. There are dozens of them, realistically I cannot even attempt to house them separately. Lacking the time, containers and the space. Right now I'm thinking of getting a larger terrarium(not huge) and putting them in there and just feeding them copious amounts of fruit flies. Is there a better way, aside from housing them separately?
Not really unfortunately. If you set them up as you describe and keep them well fed you probably will reduce how often they attempt to eat each other but given their naturally high mortality rate in early instars you probably will be down to something closer to a dozen before too long.

The height you reccomend in this video is about 1/2 of what you should do. 3x high as the mantis is long, and 2x wide as the mantis is long.

I once found an egg sac of a praying mantis and tons were out of the egg. Sad there were 3 jumping spiders near them and one had one in it’s fangs and it was squirming around. I felt bad but let nature be nature. With more grown mantises I have caught grasshoppers and put it in there faces and they’d keep bending back until they realized oh food! Then grabbed it with it’s pinchers and started eating. They usually eat the neck first.

Luca you should let them go in your yard and they’ll eat all of the bad bugs outside, that’s what I did when I had egg cases

About L6 or L7. Males typically fly a little earlier cause they mature faster than females and females tend to not fly as much
Only males fly. Females will occasionally do a short glide. Both sexes of this species reach maturity at L8.

That's interesting you say they don't make a huge impact. I live in the pacific northwest where in open grassy fields grasshoppers and locusts of many species were abundant for years but I never saw a mantis until 1990, and by 1992 it was an infestation. They've been here ever since but when the population leveled off the grashoppers were just gone. I walk through a field now and see NONE.

I was taking care of chinese mantids from the wild and they layed a good 5 ooths. It was all going smoothly at first but one day the sun hit one of the ooths too hard and I got 20 - 30 babies. The worst part is that where I am, its now Winter. If it was spring it would of been not so much of a deal and I would've just let them out into the backyard ( which I was planning to do ) . I could just let them eat each other and spray the containers every day but Im thinking of donating them to the pet shop. What should I do ?!
After consulting with the insect department the following is what they had to say:
I'd first contact the pet shop to make sure they will take them. If they will, then bring them over. They'll likely have feeders to raise them on. If not, he could try raising them himself. This will be more complicated obviously and without any feeders to give them initially he may need to let them eat each other until he can get proper feeders. He would want to start them on D. melanogaster, then upgrade to D. hydei and finally finish with either house flies or blue bottle flies when they reach mid to full size.

I had a praying mantis on my patio in recent months and I just found an egg case in my flower pot. I live in a climate where it's snows in the winter. Do you think they will have a better chance of surviving if I put it in a ventilated container and keep it in the fridge until spring, or should I just leave it outside?

Ok so I did about 6 of your ooths. I did 3 in jars. Two of the jar ooths hatched fine and I let them loose in my garden. The third ooth in the jar had about 16 hatch and all died within minutes. Three ooths I placed in my garden. Two hatched. One looked as if it was torn completely open one morning. What could’ve done that to my babies?
My mantis underwent her third molt just Yesterday and i thought her new skin looked really really weird, i thought it just wasn't dry yet so i left it but the next day i checked and her skin was the same color, she used to be a bright green but now she looks like a withered leaf! Like a pale yellow with a few black spots on her back, i have no idea what species she is and she's been acting really weird, her grip on the branches has loosened and a while ago i saw her lying on the ground on one leg. I really don't think this is normal

Depends on how many you plan on keeping at once. For example, you could probably house like 5 or 10 mantids in something like that. That’s a lot of space. Make sore you keep them well fed however because things can and do happen.

Josh's Frogs : You pointed out that the one mantis / mantid? that you had on the stick in the cup was about 3 months old.
About 2 months ago I had 2 ootheca's hatch here in Southern California. I do not know the exact species, but the adult male and female mantis were similar in size to the one you held in your hand, probably 4-5 inches in length. That being said, the babies were that typical 1/2 inch in length when born. I let a whole bunch of them go in this long grass we have in our back yard that was probably 1 1/2 feet in length at the time I let the babies go into that grass. Now the grass is upwards of 3-4 feet in length and just 4 days ago I sat out next to the grass to see if I could find any of the mantis' I let go. Sure enough I found 5 of them in the grass. The thing is, they were hardly any bigger than when I let them go 2 months ago. Seriously! I couldn't believe my eyes because it was difficult to tell if any of them had grown at all! And they have plenty of little flying critters to eat, and they were all alive so they have to be eating something. And I now your mantis was 3 month old, but unless my guys are going to have some insane growth spurt, what the heck is going on here? Why are mine so small still?
Well if they are in grass they probably dont have anywhere to molt. They want to climb up & hang upside down. They only grow when they molt.
When you keep these as pets, should you keep one to a cage ? I have seen where the female is larger, if it is possible to have them mate, at what stage should you introduce a male or female into a cage ? If you can have them mate in captivity do you put more than one male or female into the same tank ? Sorry for all the questions but I have never had mantids for pets. Thank you for your time.
I keep 1 to a cage only because I don't want my praying mantis eating each other. The only mantis species I would do that with is the Violin one. The female is usually way bigger than the male. I usually put them together when the female had her last molt L8-L10 (depends on breed). You would put them together, preferably when she is eating, so they she doesn't eat him.
At what temperature will they hatch. I've used mason jars w cheesecloth last year. I love using them for my garden but dont want to hatch early. Looking for a natural average temperature. If anybody can help? Thanks
Stick them in the fridge to slow down the hatching process
Say I want to keep one in a large terrarium right after hatching and let the others go. What do I feed it when it’s a fresh super tiny baby? And then as it gets bigger then what should I feed it?
Feed L1-L-3 instars fruit flies and aphids. At L-4 they can handle slightly larger prey like houseflies, spittlebugs, small grasshoppers, and baby crickets. L6-L8 can be fed flies, larger crickets, grasshoppers, moths, butterflies, and other larger prey. (Just avoid toxic animals like wasps, bees, spiders, ladybugs, and some caterpillar species.)
