  • There are four Atlantic islands in the Macaronesia ecoregion: the Canary Islands, a Spanish archipelago; Cape Verde, an independent African nation; and two separate autonomous islands of Portugal: Azores and Madeira. This documentary covers all but the Canaries. It is broken into three main chapters and three minor (vignette) chapters.

Because there is a set of small Micronesian islands in the Pacific, some of which LMM has filmed, like our two series' covering Guam, the Marshalls, Palau, the FSM and the Marianas, many assume there must be a macronesia (a large set of islands) somewhere in the world. (See the two series here: • Marshall Islands (Amer... , and here: • American Samoa (Americ... )
But the word Macaronesia has a completely different etymology and meaning from macronesia. Taken from the ancient Greek word, makárōn nêsoi, mentioned in Homer’s 8th Century BC work, the Odyssey, it refers to a semi-legendary place known as Isles of the Blessed, or the Fortunate Isles, a paradise reserved for special deities who were pure enough to gain entrance to the Elysian Fields.
Some say the islands were a mythical place, others say they were known. Today, the islands have been named Macaronesia in light of this Greek legend.
Is the ancient Greek mythology true? Could these islands truly be the legendary Isles of the Blessed, the Greek's Elysium, or possibly the ancient City of Atlantis?

Wonderful history lesson! Wonderful islands too. When I was very young in school I use to be very interested in Portugal and Christopher Columbus. Now older in years I've enjoyed visiting mainland Portugal and Madiera island. I'd want to go back and explore the other islands some day! Thank you for this!

Thank you! Mostly I get ugly comments about "bad" Columbus, so it's great to have comments like yours.

I love these documentaries but to say Christopher Columbus discovered the Western Hemisphere is insane. Didn’t Leif Erickson travel to Baffin Island and Labrador? Weren’t there already Taino Amerindians when Columbus landed?

@@lamanchamediatube China didn't conquer lands nor enslave the native people like Europeans did. All China requested was tribute to the Emperor.

What like enslaving whole groups of people and taking away - stealing - their land and resources?

Sir you are out of your mind! That’s not the reason why people want Christopher Columbus Day to be switch to indigenous day. The main reason was because he was a liar and manipulated a lot of the Indians and went to the king and lied on their behalf ! And you admiring someone like CC says a lot about you and the way you described the people who are fighting for indigenous day to be thing in America and hopefully all around the world is disrespectful. Slaves and indigenous people need to be celebrated the same way CC is being viewed as an historic figure around the world!

CC is larger than life and bigger than regional or geopolitical issue. Pigeonholing such persona cannot be done these days.

@@lamanchamediatube on my father's side my ancestors were indigenous to South America, while on my mother's side, my ancestors have lived on Porto Santo for over 500 years and are related to Columbus. Most people do not know the true history, because they do not study the documents. That includes you and the people in the video. 🔴 Christopher Columbus was his code name. Not his real name. He was a light skinned black Jew whose brothers were DOCUMENTED to be very dark skinned. Columbus was born in "Cuba, Portugal" to DESCENDANTS of those who had immigrated to Portugal from Italy HUNDREDS of years earlier, forced to become a Christian through the very complex process of the inquisition which started long before the accepted dates. He spoke in Hebrew. He wrote in Hebrew. He spoke and wrote in a Portuguese style of Spanish. 🔴 Columbus' family was part of the plot to kill the king of Portugal. Many of those who plotted were executed, but he and some other members of his family were pardoned, because they had been useful to the king and he knew that they could continue to be useful to him in bringing him new riches. Therefore it was a requirement to stay alive and to reinstate his family's reputation, that Columbus perform his duty as an "explorer" and a spy for the Portuguese king who wanted to ensure that the Spanish stayed out of his way, so that he could colonize Brazil which was considered by prior Portuguese explorers to be a much better asset than the Americas. Columbus' assignment was to go to the Spanish king for help, because "the Portuguese king wouldn't help him". 🔴 The ignorance and desperation of the Spanish crown was a perfect fit for this story. The Spanish crown was in debt, It had spent everything on wars, persecutions and decadence. It was in desperate need of another source of wealth. The Jewish accountant of the Spanish crown, loaned the money to the crown to finance the expedition. Columbus' left Spain on the exact day that all Jews and Muslims were required to leave or be executed or converted. He saved the lives of more than a thousand innocent Jews and Muslims who would have been executed, had they not left that day. The majority of those on Columbus' ships were Jews and Muslims. He was also forced to take prisoners and unbeknownst to him, evil spies of the Spanish crown; many of whom continued to do their evil in the Americas. Although, Columbus' had very little control over those he had brought with him, he did hang those who were caught doing harm to the indigenous people. He was known to be kind and loved by the indigenous people. 🔴 But the Spanish spies did all they could to turn people against Columbus, because he was a direct interference to the Spanish crown obtaining maximum wealth which required annihilation of the indigenous people. In addition to their basic mission, they hated Columbus' for having hung their fellow spies. Unfortunately it only takes a few bad apples to contaminate the whole bunch. After Columbus' returned, the Spanish crown sent hundreds of evil doers to acquire all possible wealth, by any means necessary. Columbus died soon after his first voyage, having been poisoned by his enemies. 🔴 Do all these facts mean that Columbus never caused harm to anyone? Its almost impossible to be in that position and not cause harm to someone, even if unintentionally. However the world that he lived in was so abusive that it auto generated abusiveness. To merely survive was, in most cases, to unintentionally cause harm to someone else. Just like how most of yall buy products from companies that abuse their workers and most of the time you dont even know it.
