    I love this video for showing the use of a simple melody as raw material for more interesting and complex solos. Which seems like a simple but stunningly important concept in jazz. I can especially see how the first line gets morphed into the second line; that's an incremental change, and I'm probably capable of doing that kind of thing myself. However the leap to what occurs in the third line seems like several levels of technical development away. What would you say to a player who can attain what you did with the second line, but who can't really even start to approach the third line? (I mean, other than "go practice.")

    • @drwallysax
      @drwallysax  3 роки тому +1

      There are years of study between 2 and 3 (as you noted). The magic (and frustration) of youtube is that I can throw out material that interests a wide variety of playing levels. And that's the downside :)

    Love you tone Dr. Wally, especially on alto. What microphone and preamp are you using to capture your sound? Also great melodic development info. I personally think you should keep your melodies and solos simple and tasteful and really focus on your tone and delivery.. I like to apply a question and answer method. Some say "call and response. Sprinkle in some tension and release. Anyway, Dr Wally, tons of respect for your channel. I learn something everytime bro.

    Lovely video as always Dr. Wallace. There’s a reason that there are 0 disliked on this one. I don’t know if you remember my comment, but earlier I asked about the differences between the YAS-62, 82, and. 875. I just picked up my YAS-62 on Friday and am waiting for my JodyJazz HR* 5M to come. My question is, is it worth it to buy the Power Ring ligature since it’s specifically designed for this mouthpiece, or it is better to save the money and use a stock ligature for the mouthpiece?

    • @drwallysax
      @drwallysax  3 роки тому +1

When I tried it, I had a lot of trouble playing low C# and B, but that was just a minor adjustment in the pads department and it was fixed. The engraving is beautiful and the case might be my favorite part :p. I’m just waiting on my mouthpiece to come in and I’ll be good to go. Can I ask what you paid for your 62? I am contemplating this horn myself, as a compromise between the quality of getting a Yamaha pro horn, and the quality of my marriage. I have seen some used 62s on Ebay for around $2K, that's probably do-able for me.

    • @rohankurani4974

      @@brucerockwell9281 the list price of a YAS-62 III brand new (what I got) is normally $3091.99. However, the sales clerk at my local Sam Ash (shoutout to Barry, he’s awesome!) knocked about $400 off the price, and threw in a service plan that covered any damage that happened for the next 2 years free. He also gave me a $70 discount on my JJ mouthpiece. So there’s list price, but I’m sure you can find a friendly salesman who is willing to knock some off of the price if you are nice.

    Dr Wally, hope this isn’t a stupid question, I thought call and response was someone plays something and another player plays a response back (similar but not the same thing). Coming up with a different response off the cuff is a little beyond me. Or am I way off and you want us to just play back the same line? Sorry if this seems dense.

    • @drwallysax
      @drwallysax  3 роки тому +1

      Not desne at all Edward! Originally, call and response was a planned call and a set response - early singing traditions. I use the term loosely, to just mean, I play and you repeat back. It is, however, also a powerful tool to practice altering the response! And start to stretch your improvisation legs! Make sense?

      @@drwallysax yes I just realised you are saying it's in sax G so therefore written G, and then that would of course be those concert pitches. Just felt like the other way around. Apologies Dr W. I shall give my red pen a ceremonial burial first thing in the morning. Here in Stockholm time it's soon 11pm. Hope you have a fab Sunday whatever time is with you. Also as a Brit learning and living in a second language it is a neat parallel that language learning works just as you say first we have to recreate (and within that be in the immersion stage) and then we have interesting vocabulary and turns of phrases to express ourselves. Language and music are so closely aligned. Just one more thing: in Swedish they use the word "klingande" literally for sounding pitch, or concert. And "klang" is is such a fab word meaning sound, and specifically can be attributed to the sound made by us musicians playing together. :)
