I just recall listening a comedian talk about how boring chess is to watch. "Nothing happens!" he would exclaim. Yes, chess is very uneventful if you don't know what's going on. If you have two brain cells though, it's quite fascinating.
Chess is very boring. The players don't even throw a single punch in their matches, or do a somersault or overhead kick, instead just move pieces round a board with squares on it- and with long gaps in between in which they just sit there. It beggars belief that some people actually find it interesting, never mind fascinating.
I agree with Karpov, if he had been able to play Fischer -- which would have been a great learning experience -- he would have been a better player when he played Kasparov. I'm not going to argue against FIDE ratings, but I think Karpov was better than Kasparov.

@@barracuda7018 As a Kasparov fan I'm with you on this Barracuda. Karpov never won in a WC match against Kasparov. If others are going to spout on about chess players in their prime then we should say that when Garry took on Karpov in 1984 it was way before Kasparov's prime at the age of just 21 (remember this was at a time when we didn't have 12-year-old GMs like today). Yes, Kasparov battled through that first match and learned a lot about Karpov's style of play, a sign of maturity and determination in the youthful Garry. Karpov himself said that when he played Korchnoi in 1978 he found (unexpectedly) that Korchnoi was in his prime as a chess player. Korchnoi was 47 at this point so there is no reason for anyone to say a 33-year-old Karpov was past his best in 1984 - in fact his peak rating was achieved in 1994 after the series of WC matches with Kasparov. Kasparov's peak rating of 2851 stood for a long time until Carlsen eclipsed it in 2013 (the only player to do so). Karpov was/is a very fine player but only staunch Anatoly fans will try and maintain he was better or as good as Kasparov.

Very poor performance by Karpov. Though his opponent played poorly, Karpov was worse most of the time and didn't have a plan. So they made knight manoeuvers without sense, repeated moves etc. Then his opponent "sacrificed" a knight for no compensation and with a piece up and black's pieces far away from the center Karpov was able to win easily. Very weak play on both sides.
I'm a Karpov die-hard, but you're right. His only plan was to be quicker than his opponent, who had no plan either. Had he not sacrificed his knights for a rook, Karpov would have had to flag him.
@@aleksthegreat4130 Maybe in his prime (20-30 years ago) but certainly not if he plays like this. His performance was truly pathetic in this game.
