Bawankule's career commenced in earnest in the early nineties, he started movement for supply of Electricity and went behind the bars in 1990. He started “Chhatrapati Sena” and continued its social work till 1994 without any self-interest. Then he joined Bhartiya Janata Party under leadership of Late Gopinath Munde & Nitin Gadkari in 1995 and became Vice President of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha a youth wing of the BJP in Maharashtra in 1995.
In 1997 & 2002, Bawankule was elected as a District Council Member. In 2004, he was elected to the Maharashtra state assembly for the first time. He is currently serving his third term as MLA as of 2014. Bawankule was sworn in as the Minister for Energy, New & Renewable Energy of Maharashtra from the BJP on 6 December 2014.
