Potsdam City Palace - Potsdamer Stadtschloss - Reconstruction

  • The reconstruction of the Potsdamer Stadtschloss is not a singular incident but part of a larger trend in the reunited Germany of the past two decades. (C.f. Berlin's decision to rebuild its city palace). "In particular, the architects are to blame," the journalist and former politician Alexander Gauland writes. "After they squandered the Bauhaus legacy in soulless box architecture in the West and no-less-soulless Eastern-bloc slab construction, everyone is pressing for reconstruction. From the historic Zeil in Frankfurt to the Dresden Frauenkirche, to the Berlin & Potsdam city-palaces, citizens are calling for the restoration of the old, since the modern cannot provide a sense of home."
The palace's absense left a formless void in the middle of Potsdam's city center. In the mid 1990s, the Prince of Wales put together an Urban Task Force to study the city in terms of traditional urban design and architecture and recommended rebuilding much of the lost structures of the Old Market. This included constructing a new stadtschloss on the outline of the old one, but to a new design in a traditional style. While the proposals of the Prince of Wales's Urban Task Force initiated much debate and discussion, the old palace's Fortuna Gate was restored in 2000-2001 with funds donated by the television host Günter Jauch (of the old Hanseatic family of Jauch).

I commute past the Stadtschloss on a daily basis on my way to / from work with the Tram. It looks even better now that it is fully done, with burnished golden decorations etc.

What happened to the original palace is a crime itself, I get it, the war, but the palace was a masterpiece worthy of conservation.

I'm not very happy that concrete was used for the reconstruction because the original place was made of brick

it looked from the video as though they used steel-reinforced concrete for the structure and then added an historical facade similar to the original on top. The windows looked like modern glass. But the main thing is for it to look like the original or similar to the original. If it had not been destroyed, they would probably have renovated over the years and added more modern materials and added fixtures of the modern world that were not included in the original.

They're rebuilding Dresden city centre with modern style buildings that mock their pre war predecessors. The monuments are the only things they're restoring to its original style, the rest are modern that attempt to look like the buildings before the war. Bloody shameless those planners are.

Random Game between 150 to 160 Million Euro. Since 2014 the state parliament of Brandenburg is residing in the building and they had to do some changes and upgrades on the technical side the meet all the needs of the Parliament. Before that I think the costs were around 140 million.

If you reconstruct something you should also use the building techniques of that time and the building materials used at that time, otherwise the whole thing is a kind of Disneyland

Rebuilding the fabric of the past - destroyed by warfare, ignorance, and / or bigotry - is most commendable. It will serve to remind us of our heritage - what was good and what was not good. And it will give future generations an appreciation of a past aesthetic when buildings were works of art. Plus, the city palace can become the center of a thriving cultural life.
I understand that the Garnisonkirche will be next. I hope to live to see that. garnisonkirche-potsdam.de/das-projekt/wiederaufbau/

You'll notice that outside of the concrete wall at the base is a concrete ledge. That is to support the outer thickness of the wall made of brick. The reason this is done is to add insulation, it's called a cavity wall. As long as they are both self-supporting and add up to the same thickness, I don't take as much issue.
