Two friends drove from Bergen, Norway to Hungary a winter some 15 years ago. There, they joined the 7400 km Budapest-Bamako (Mali) charity rally. Including many days on almost non-existing Sahara and Sahel desert/rural roads. Car: A somewhat tired 1968 Citröen DS. They made it all the way!
The D-Series cars even won the Monte Carlo Rally twice, so they had the speed, but in these historic rally races the speed also largely depends on how willing the driver is to thrash the old car or how careful he chooses to be.
Pauli Toivonen was fifth in ds monte carlo, but won race cause judges dsq english cars in front that they get french car to win. And Toivonen didn't take his 1st prize
Ian, Ds won several rallies and, as gaborcsudi7006 said below, a couple of Monte Carlo Rallies... the most famous episodes were 1968 London to Sidney Rally, where Lucien Bianchiin DS21 was leading a whole day over the second place car, but was involved in a collision 50 km before the finish and wrote the car off. And the Ronde Hivernale de Chamonix in 1972, where Waldegard achieved a second place, despite the fact that he LOST ONE OF HIS WHEELS 😃
Originally, the 2 CV was designed for farmers: the car was meant to allow them to carry baskets of eggs through fields without breaking them. But as the car was cheap and used no more than 3 L/100 km (95 mpg) it quickly became extremely popular among students and young people. BTW you say it right "seetro-en"!
@@module79l28because I have no experience growing up with these cars, it looks like a 2CV to me, I didn’t think anything of the word Dyane to be fair. My apologies y’all 🎉

7:46 - Nice color choice! Back before sponsorships, cars were painted in their team's 'national racing color'. I'm sure you've heard of "British Racing Green" and seen plenty of red Ferraris. France's color was that light blue. BTW: America's colors were blue with white stripes or white with blue stripes (look up Shelby's Daytona Coupes for an example). 14:08 - Great catch!
Hey Ian, I love that you've added driving the cars in Dirt2 into your reactions. I've giggled many times, I'm looking forward to the next car you react to :) EDIT: The whole rally stage was a total blast, your throttle feathering and steering inputs were really good! Yes you were on the limit a few times but that just shows you can deal with some adrenaline in your system :) Had you taken the Mini out instead you'd have experienced much more terminal under steer, this car actually responds&slides pretty well for a FWD car! I really was grinning a lot so PLEASE keep this format coming! Cheers
I've owned Dyane's (like in your clip), 2CVs and Renault 4s, and nothing drives like them, especially in snow. Passengers have screamed more than once but there is no loss of control. My old man had a DS, but I've just had a CX and a couple of C5s. It's not until I drive a non-Citroën that I realise just how rough the roads are. Not tried one of the new setups yet.
Old rally cars are the best rally cars. That DS really looked like a lot of fun on that stage. You held it with a few hairy moments there too, so well done there. One Citroen you need to look into if you haven't is the SM. I'm saying nothing about it to not spoil it for you for if you don't know of it; but you really, really should look them up.
The Dyane was supposed to replace the 2CV, but had essentially the same chassis+suspension and an upgraded engine. The engine was backported to the 2CV and the Dyane disappeared.
I'm looking forward to you driving with the steering wheel. I would just like to mention that in the game there is a stage in Poland called "Lejno", which in Czech means poo, which is often referred to as cows in the Czech Republic. I know it doesn't normally belong to rally that much, but this is the name that people playing the game have been having fun with since the game was released in 2019.
Citroën 2CV, that hardest vehicle to roll ever made. That "test area" you started in is Dirt Fish Rally School, in Snoqualmie, Washington. Man, you are pretty good at this video game driving! You got a fine touch on the controller. 👏👏
Thanks! For literally no time in the game so far, I do feel I’m doing pretty good 🎉 it will be interesting to transition to a racing Wheel/pedals etc. Will be a learning curve, but I hope ultimately I’ll be able to set slightly faster times than on controller
@@IWrocker At the very least the pedals helps a lot, its so much easier to control the braking and the throttle. Dont be surprised if you feel the need to modify the brake pedal, if its too soft or dont feel "real" enough. I dont know what set you are getting but most above average have "kits" in the box. The steering takes a little bit getting used too but with good Force Feedback and a decent wheel you get a hang of it pretty quick.☺
The DS is the first model that has the hydrostatic suspension. Using spheres with nitrogen for the Springs and hydraulic fluid or mineral oil is for control and dampening for the suspension which drops the back down. When you hit the brakes, keep the weight Central to the car.
You took the words out of my mouth, Ian. Reminds me of those cartoon cars where the body lifts up on stilts while the wheels stay on the ground. @@optimusmaximus9646 that's the DS' suspension - the 2CV's suspension wasn't self-levelling, but linked back and front wheels and gave them a lot of range. Coupled with how light the car was, it would stick to the road like glue.
We had a brand new yellow Dyane back in 1976 through to 1979 (and replaced with a beige GS Club estate). My uncle from Texas had never seen one before, let alone driven one, so he had fun when he drove it, especially throwing it around bends. Talk about going from one extreme to the other as my uncle had a Ford truck of sorts (no idea what model - probably an F-150) and my aunt had a 1978 Lincoln Continental Town Car at the time. The DS looks very lumbering around the bends given how large and low slung it is, but it's still a fun car to drive and takes everything in its stride. You really need to find someone near you in the US with a DS to take it for a test drive and especially over a rough road surface as the bumps are all still there, but you don't even feel them.

Been simracing for over 2 decades. I really cringe when I hear you say "realistic feeling" on a gamepad :) You gonna be hooked so hard when you get the wheel, you have no idea ! Get ready for your new racing addiction. Oh , and stick to RF2, best trainer for real life driving skills out there.
Racing sims do “feel realistic “ even through a gamepad, which is why I’m SUPER excited about how the my feel through a real racing sim setup (wheel/pedals) I reckon a racing addiction is coming lol 🎉
