I have many pads..My favorite is a Vater 2 sided pad..Love it...Real Feel is second.I have a pad set in my studio.Practise pad study has helped me through 60+ years of playing and teaching...

@@RalphOnofrio several people that responded said they use multiple pads. It's interesting. I wouldn't know the results unless I tried practicing that way for awhile.

Thanks for this video. Here's my take on all of this. In drumming, we use our hands, fingers, and wrists obviously. I have found that pillows work quite well for developing the wrists (and forearms) most quickly and effectively because of the lack of rebound. However, pillows are generally not good for developing a proper bounce. So, in order to develop a quality bounce, a practice pad must enter the picture. But since the wrist does not do much work with a bouncy pad, a pad will not develop the wrist. So once I developed really fast and accurate single strokes on a pillow, I then would switch over to a pad to develop the diddles and other patterns. Also, using a heavy marching stick with the pillow adds another level of difficulty which aids in development. I prefer the Ralph Hardimon signature stick which is quite heavy. If I need to warm up the wrists and forearms very quickly, using the RH sticks on a pillow works well. My wrists (and forearms) are now developed to a level where I don't need the pillow anymore but I do revisit the pillow occasionally as a self-check. The rest of the time is on a pad (or a drum). These days I use an Evans Real Feel pad which I am now accustomed to. All thoughts welcome.

@@adityatyagi4009 I haven't done much practicing on a pillow as I've always been a big believer in practicing on what you will perform with. The same is true with the drumsticks I practice with. However I'm not saying what you do isn't effective. How would I know unless I did a lot of it? I will also say that sometimes people criticize things they know nothing about. For instance when I was in college my percussion teacher saw me practicing Moeller techniques - full strokes etc. He thought I was wasting practice time practicing with sticks extremely high. His thinking was that you're never going to play like that so why practice that way? But he was wrong. He just didn't understand what I was doing.

As a new “older” beginner I purchased a remo because I remembered that is what the drummers used in band when I was growing up. But then I watched a lot of UA-cam comparison's where the Remo didn’t do so well. I ended up purchasing a Sabian Quiet Tone. I probably don’t have the experience to know which one is best. But for me the response on the Sabina feels a little more like the real snare I use in my lessons.

Thanks for your feedback. When I get a chance I'll check out that Sabian pad more thoroughly😀

I have a Vader and Real Feel. The Vader sounds better and is louder, but the RF really does have a better feel. I live in an apartment complex so I can't really have a drum. LOL I actually use both together to differentiate the sound. I want to by a 12 inch with a snare stand! I'm tired of laying on the floor and playing! I have a Corpsmaster MS6 with rubber tips, a 5A and 7A sticks. Lately I like using the MS6 because they aren't as loud and give me a deeper sound when drumming with music even though they are huge, thick sticks haha. It's helped me advance very quickly in through these 4 months that I've been drumming. I practice about an hour to an hour and a half every couple days. I like flipping back and forth between the sticks to help my stick control. I can almost drum along to the group Polyphia. The bass, guitar riffs are one off amazing! If you don't know this band as a drummer I suggest you look them up! The most important lesson I've learned in these 4 months is to relax your hand and fingers when playing, forcing it will only get you so far as tension will only hurt your wrist and tendons in the long run.

I am using the Sabian Quiet Tone which I think is similar to the Remo, but it is a wider diameter. Completely agree with you on the rubber pads.

    1) Xpad (Promark)
    2) Vater
    3) Vic Firth
    4) Evan’s
I love pad work but is critical that we also dedicate a significant amount of practice time to playing on the drum(s) on which we perform as well as with the sticks that we will utilize.

@@scrapflies I agree. It would be interesting for me to experiment some more though. I was surprised to find that many drummers practice on multiple pads. It's similar to the drumset in some ways. On the set the snare feels much different than the toms and the high hat.

Currently I got my trusty Evans RealFeel, and put an appropriate-sized drum mute for a little less rebound if I want to work on my hands. Also a huge fan of the MoonGel pad for an extra workout!

Sure, the Remo feels best, but it is too loud to play in the house or outdoors without disturbing people

@@rodneyvandenoever I've never had that problem. But I've probably been fortunate. I've had my own home for many years. I have really never had to practice in an apartment. But I agree that it's not as quiet as many of the others

Could not agree more; Practice on what you'll be playing on. I've had pads over the years, too much bounce, and not at all what a real drum head feels like. Thats why I grabbed a cheap piccolo snare on line, filled it up with a couple of tee shirts to quiet it down for practicing upstairs, and im good to go. What other musician practices their instrument on anything other than THEIR instrument?

@@John-p2o8g that's a good point. No such thing as a practice guitar or practice trumpet. I like your idea of just modifying an actual drum.

Thanks for your feedback. I was actually talking about the way the pad feels, not the way it sounds which is difficult to demonstrate in a video.
