this video comforted me so much - I'm trying to get a job at a garden centre right now and I feel really overwhelmed, there's so much I don't know! knowing that other people also feel overwhelmed at the beginning helps a lot
I loved watching your video! I was just like you back in when I went from a retail music job in the mall and worked at a nursery just up the hill from where I lived. I had no knowledge of plants and I had to research all the books as there was no Google but I loved learning everything and I especially loved the annual department where I spent a lot of time learning and caring for them. We had the greatest staff and it was an independent longstanding nursery with so many great people, I began to study computers in school at the same time and started making printed list for them of the potting soils and all the flowers with the prices so they didn't have to go searching it was already on the counters for them. I still dream about that job and wish I could go back, one of the best jobs I ever had!
Gaining a passion for plants comes with having a job like this. I am a merchandiser for a nursery that supplies the Home Depots Garden Center. This job changed my life. The experiences are absolutely worth the work. I enjoy listening to your thoughts and feelings towards your job. It's truly a humbling position, learning about plants and being able to share the knowledge you attain on a daily basis. I thank you for all the work you have done this season, not only for the company you work for or the customers, but from the human perspective of simply giving back to the Earth...We all appreciate you!
I keep looking for videos on working at garden centers and i was really hoping this was the one. Almost got there! You mentioned coming home covered in dirt, disheveled, etc. THIS is what the people need to see. Show us being the super heroes that we are!! 💪
Awesome video young lady, you are definitely a steward of the land. I'm a 3rd Gen farmer, 1st Gen urban farmer. You've inspired me to keep going. Thank you and God bless you and your family. Keep up the great work.
Thank you for sharing! I just got hired at a garden center today. While I have 3 and a half years of botany classes, the most recent one was 6 years ago. You helped me feel much more confident in my decision to take the job!!!
I now work at a Seedling business and in Beneficials at a Super farm. The more I'm with plants and being outside in nature the happier and healthier I feel.
I came to similar conclusions that working in a garden centre would be good for me after going through burnout. The difference is that I have a lot of the knowledge already but don't seem to be abke to get hired, which is really frustrating. Glad you had better luck. Great video.
I started work at a garden centre last spring and went through a lot of the same feelings as you haha. I had studied a bit of botany, but mainly houseplants, not garden plants, so it was a bit learning curve! But I agree with you about all the good points too. Every day is new, you get to spend time outside ☀️
I'm in the uk and I work at a garden centre and it's nothing like this!! I'm so jealous of you ahaha. It's often raining and days are spent couped up in the greenhouse and venturing outside is horrendous. It's ok in the summer, although the amount of work to do it crazy! Lifting heavy bags of compost and bark can be tough but you do get a great body from it ahahah. Also, the summer tan can be amazing but not the tan lines, t-shirt tan lines anyone? This job comes with a lot of positives; lovely people, working with plants/ in nature, calming some of the time, but it also comes with drawbacks; horrendous weather conditions can be tough mentally and physically, can be physically difficult with the lifting side of it, can get overwhelming with jobs to do in summer (trying to keep plants alive by watering, weeding, serving customers, working in heat). But the decision is yours to make. If you live somewhere that is often warm, go for it. But don't do this job solely for a passion of plants, it's way more then just staring and looking after them!
I just left my office job because I love working outside in my garden and plan on looking for a part time job at a garden center. Thanks for the video!
I cant wait to work for a garden center/nursery!😍😍 that's my plan for next year God willing(im late for this yr) . I need to know how they operate n n learn how to run one of these businesses. To be surrounded by plants is like the BEST JOB!🌻🌻
Oh my gosh I needed to see your video! I literally just started at a landscaping business and I am going to be doing retail in their green house!! I was working in factory and I didn't feel like a human... although terrified, I am so excited to learn, seeing this I'm literally at the same point you had started and seeing you have some plants names known in a few months..... it's a relief that someone can make it through a whole learning curve lol thank you for your video! I will continue to watch and learn with you lol
Was the exact same but doing landscape gardening. Still don’t know many plants and learning how to build etc as well adds more to the learning curve. Still enjoy it a lot, honestly don’t think I could do an office job now.
Thanks for this video. ☺️ I’ve been getting really into herbalism and am looking to find a way to get in the work of plants and flowers. I am also experiencing burn out at my current job so I can relate to you there.
I’d be interested in learning about herbalism myself but you can’t beat hands-on experience. A job at garden center (or even a local flower farm) might be a good fit? Good luck!
really enjoyed your video. i thought you were very honest about it. i'm toying with the idea of working in a local garden center. i love gardening (& plants too) but i've done retail before and not really looking to get back into it.
the way you tell stories through video is really fascinating! it all clicked when you mentioned you were a graphic designer haha i noticed you haven't posted in a while, but i hope you keep on creating. thank you for sharing this wonderful video with us! 🥰
Thank you, that's so sweet! I wasn't sure what video to make next... and then 10 months flew by 🙃 I'd love to make more videos, thanks again for the kind encouragement! 💛
I’m a plant merchandiser for Walmart and it’s literally the BEST job on earth other than the old ladies who work for Walmart and give you shit constantly and try to do your job for you and end up killing all of the plants 😭😭 I wish we were the only ones in there but other than that working in a garden center is the best job on earth
I just started with Lowe's and immediately put in for the garden center. Looks like I'll be getting the position soon. Thanks for your comments. It really solidifies the decision I've made.
Do you think it's realistic for someone (me) who has never really gardened to pursue your kind of job? It looks so relaxing and peaceful and that's something that's important to me regarding my job.
I love Allbirds shoes. They are so comfortable and my feet don’t hurt after walking on pavement all day. When it’s snowing or raining I wear Merrell hiking boots. Good luck at your job!
Honestly they were very understanding about my lack of experience. The expectation was that I would ask lots of questions and learn on the job. I did have other customer service experience from waitressing which definitely helped 🌸
I'm not working at the garden center currently (it's a seasonal job). I worked there for two seasons and I'm undecided as to whether I will return in the spring.
this video comforted me so much - I'm trying to get a job at a garden centre right now and I feel really overwhelmed, there's so much I don't know! knowing that other people also feel overwhelmed at the beginning helps a lot
You're not alone! Don't let feeling overwhelmed hold you back. You can do it!

What was I expecting -- to be surrounded by flowers all day? That's the dream! 🌻👩🏼🌾🌷

You bring up some great points, this type of job is demanding and rewarding too. But the tan lines are the worst! 😂

Hi! About to start a job at a Garden Center, any recommendations for shoes?
I love Allbirds shoes. They are so comfortable and my feet don’t hurt after walking on pavement all day. When it’s snowing or raining I wear Merrell hiking boots. Good luck at your job!
I'm a writer, here for research ^u^ hello!
How did you sell yourself during the interview being that you just had a love and passion for plants but no prior experience before you got the job? I
Honestly they were very understanding about my lack of experience. The expectation was that I would ask lots of questions and learn on the job. I did have other customer service experience from waitressing which definitely helped 🌸
