    I owned an Aeropress for a couple of years, thinking it was a decent little coffeemaker; then got a little tired of using it, bought a French Press, tried it once and have not used the Aeropress again.
    Re: the Aeropress being faster, actually most of the time you spend making coffee goes into things like measuring and boiling the water, measuring the coffee grounds. The Aeropress does brew the coffee a little faster, but as a percentage of the total time, it's not very different.
    The reasons I gave up on my Aeropress were:
    (1) The coffee did not taste as good. I expect this was because of the plastic the coffee is brewed in, and the paper filters.
    (2) Using an Aeropress can be messy, especially if you use the "inverted" method that involves filling the device with hot water, putting the filter and lid on top, then flipping it upside down while trying to balance it on a mug or cup. Best done over the sink. Can result in burns if you do it wrong.
    (3) If you want two cups of coffee, and are using an Aeropress, you have to disassemble the whole thing, scoop out the hot/used grounds, rinse the container, rinse the filter, reassemble, measure two more scoops of coffee grounds, heat more water, pour in the hot water, wait again, and press again. It's messy, and more than doubles the preparation time and cleanup. And in the meantime, your first cup of coffee has cooled. Making two cups in and Aeropress also takes a huge amount of time and attention compared to a French Press, which already makes more than two cups, that you just fill with water then leave to let brew.
    Oh, and if I needed something for the road, I'd buy a SMALL French Press coffeemaker, which is cheaper than an Aeropress. Re: a French Press breaking, ah, no, it won't, if you buy one made of stainless steel.
    In short, I'm no longer a fan of the Aeropress. Apart from habit and brand name loyalty, I'm not sure why the item is so popular.

      Nils Osmar French press covers up flavor notes much to easy. That's why the aeropress, kalita, v60, ect have cropped up. There's a market for all of them! All of them have different characteristics and all of them make a great cup of coffee French press included.

    • @Nilsosmar
      @Nilsosmar 6 років тому +8

      Adam, thank you for replying to my post. All I can say is, my experience differs from yours. The Aeropress was the one that I found would ruin good coffee. I'm drinking an amazing cup of coffee brewed in a french press as I type this, with a wonderful range of subtle flavors and aromas; it's incomparably better than the coffee I used to make in the Aeropress.
      I'm not discounting your opinions; I trust that you have reasons for writing what you did, that feel valid to you; but my experience has been different. My experience has been that the Aeropress blunts and ruins the flavors of good coffee, and the french press, if used properly, is the perfect brewing device.
      This is because of (1) the plastic the Aeorpress coffee is brewed in, and (2) the paper filters. Those who buy a metal filter may experience somewhat better results with the Aeropress, but they'll still be brewing it in a piece of plastic, rather than glass or stainless steel. Plastic has its own unpleasant flavor, and also absorbs flavors as it's used, as time goes by, which it then can impart in an unpleasant way to foods stored or brewed in it.
      I recently threw away the Aeropress that had been gathering dust since I bought a French Press coffeemaker. Looking back on it, my associations with it are: messy.... poor flavor... hard to control temperature... hassle. My associations with the French Press are: clean... quick... needs little attention... makes a great cup of coffee.
      It may also be that the particular brand of French Press I bought is extraordinary. The one I bought is an Ardito Stainless Steel French Press 34 oz Coffee Maker with a Double Wall Wide Base with Dual Filters. Whatever the reason, I know after using it that I'll never use an Aeropress again.

      Just a note...With the aeropress you do not need to scoop out the grounds after making a cup.
      Simply screw off the black part, with the rest of the press still in tact and press down a little more and the coffee puck and used filter will fall right out.

    • @macdaddy9344
      @macdaddy9344 5 років тому +2

      I’m thinking you are embellishing the argument just a bit... however, you are entitled to your personal preferences... clean up is much easier on the AreoPress. Just press out the plug of grounds and wipe it down... done... and if you are concerned about burning yourself with the AeroPress then don’t use the inversion method... or switch to cold brew... ;-)

  • @BensCoffeeRants

    Aeopress is a combination of immersion brewing (like french press) and pressure brewing since you do generate some pressure when pressing the water through the coffee bed and filter. Both use heat of course if you're brewing with hot water! With both you need to be aware of how the temperature, grind size, brew time, and brew ratio (amount of water to coffee) will affect your end result!
    You can grind finer for French press (I recommend it), there's different methods for that to prevent a lot of silt or fine particles from getting in to your cup (The James Hoffman / no press french press method is pretty good!).
    There's a slightly smaller Aeropress 'GO' now but it's basically the same thing, I think it comes with its own little cup too.
    The biggest advantage to the Aeropress is ease of cleaning I think. Never heard of anyone making tea with an Aeropress.

    And then there is Toaks’ Titanium French Press for travel.
    I coupled mine with two Snow Peak 400ml double walled titanium cups. The cups fit perfectly on the top and bottom of the French press, and they both fit into the mesh bag that comes with the press. I store my pre-ground coffee inside the press. That’s my set up. And I’d rather brew coffee in titanium than plastic and paper. :)

    I've tried a few brewing methods but I wouldn't say that a single one is "perfect" for me. I like medium to light roast coffee, which necessitates a longer brewing time. Two common options for these kinds of roasts are French press and pour-over.
    Optimal brewing time is proportional to grind size but pour-over brewing time is inversely proportional to grind size. If one superimposes the two, they only overlap once, meaning that there's only one grind size that will produce good extraction, in a pour-over, for any given roast. Additionally, small changes in grind size produce large changes in brewing time... potentially very large.
    However, with a French press, I can control brewing time as I wish but, by the time extraction is done, the coffee needs microwaving, as it's now cold.
    Solutions...
    I could buy a heat insulated or double walled French press or a percolator. I've avoided percolators because they've a reputation for ridiculous over extraction but, I suppose, it all depends how one uses said contraption and light grinds might just need the extra extraction.

    Hello i just bought the wilfa WSCG-2 and a aeropress and wonder how coarse/fine should i grind the beans for my aeropress?
    I would like maximum sweetness and fruityness and less of the roast dark tastes.
    Any tips to achieve this result? Less or longer time before i press?
    Coarser or finer grind?
    Hoter or colder water?
    I want the maximum taste of the fruity sweet delicous coffe that i get when visiting places with good baristas.

    • @nathansharp3193
      @nathansharp3193 4 роки тому +2

      knife sharpening norway : I'm no expert, but I like a medium-ish grind, definitely not fine. And my best results come from a very quick steep and press. I put the coffee in, add the water, stir and press. No waiting. Every time I wait longer the coffee comes out more bitter. If you want stronger coffee just add more grounds and don't lengthen the brew time and/or dilute it less.
      For water temperature, I've never actually measured it. I boil the water, and put that into my drinking container. This heats up my cup and helps my measurements while reducing the temperature of the water. I then pour the water out of my pre-heated cup into the Aeropress leaving any water that doesn't fit into the press in the cup. And I press the coffee back into the cup with water for an Americano. Specific measurements change with the size of your cup.
      I also use the inverted method with the Aeropress.

    I love all coffee systems & have Italian, Turkish, pour over, French Press & Aeropress. It all depends on if I am making coffee for just me or sharing. It is a hassle changing back & forth remembering the grinds . I seem to have the most fails with Aeropress (blowing out the poor paper filters with too hot or too much force with the water pour). I swear I like coffee as strong as motor oil so the cold brew was a waste since I would not dilute it. Thanks for the video, I am still learning.

    You are not limited to one 8 oz. serving with an Aeropress. Say you want 16 oz. of coffee. You use two scoops, which makes a concentrated brew, then add enough hot water after pressing to make 16 oz. I haven't tried 3 or 4 cups, though. I just wanted enough to fill a larger mug. Mine came w/o the carrying bag, so I use a cloth re-useable shopping bag to carry the parts & coffee bags. It's a fine substitute. Choose a bright color so that it's easy to I.D. Keep the paper filters in a re-sealable sandwich bag.

    I've been searching for a way to travel and have decent coffee for 8 years. I've tried a small french press (broke the glass!), one of those silicone over the cup filter things (took too long and couldn't see when the cup was full), coffee teabags, and the dreaded instant. When I first moved to the UK in 2008, I was using a french press for my coffee before I got a drip machine and I actually really hate the french press - mostly because it's a pain to clean out. The Aeropress looks like it would be easier, though I would like to know how to actually use it and how to do more than one cup at a time.

    6:25 if your filters are big enough (larger diameter than french press) you don't even have to unscrew anything. Just put the filter over the french press opening and push the lid on. As long as the filter gets pinched between the glass and the metal filter, it will hold in place. In the past I've used the big, generic, drip-coffee filters this way so there is no need to track down little filters that probably end up costing more money anyways.

      cafe au lait - coffee with milk where latte - espress with milk. Aeropress don't make real espresso instead it makes espresso-like coffee. So I think you can have both to experiment. Enjoy your coffee!

    Absolutely top quality video. Very informative. No wasting time or comments. Very, Very Helpful. Thank you so much! I like the quote too. Personal Note: I take coffee to counteract low blood pressure. A very alert Indian specialist found out I had low blood pressure and recommended coffee as the best remedy. He is right too! I have had to have a catheter and saline solution administered in hospital after an operation. My blood pressure went to 82 over 58 before they put the saline in. I tried to tell the Doctor to just give me some coffee, but he would not listen. My blood pressure drops after any kind of sedation. Now, I joke with people and tell them I take coffee for medical reasons. They think I am joking, then I tell them it is true. I think I will look at getting an aeropress because of the mobility. Once again Thank you for the GREAT video!

    I love my single cup sized stainless steel french press. Very portable. It makes great coffee and came with 3 filters so it makes very clean coffee but with enough body that it doesn't taste weak or watered down. I even make tea with it. I recently bought an aeropress and honestly, I still prefer my french press. The coffee has more body with the french press and I prefer that. For those who like a cleaner coffee choose Aeropress.

    Great presentation and video. But two big mistakes... you definitely could have shortened this down to a more watchable 5-6 minute video. And when you go to make the FINAL analysis you say "French Press" twice and it is extremely confusing. Many viewers will skip to your final analysis which you screwed up. My suggestion would be to re-upload the video with the audio fixed (simple fix in a vid editing program as you say AeroPress a thousand times so use a sample). 7/10. Thanks!

      The point is you have more options with the aeropress. You can go, oil or no oil, you can go, immersion then press, you can go immediate press, you can make a latte, you can make a cup of joe, you can make an espresso, you can make tea with it. You can only make coffee and tea, in comparison, and only one grind type, coarse, is okay for French press, as well French press takes longer and as if that weren't enough, an aeropress also has this neat lil puck of coffee you just pop out when you're done. With french press you instead have to either dump coarse coffee grounds down your sink, wait for it to dry up, or scoop out wet material in to the trash can and then get the grounds off your filter, press, glass, and generally it's more work to clean.
      There's a reason Aeropress is considered one of the best travel coffee makers, as it makes a damn good cup of coffee, is able to be stored and washed easily, makes coffee in minutes, and has so many options for how to brew your coffee from one coffee maker, not something many coffee makers can say, that they do espresso, coffee, tea, and more, better than you do one of them, and with more customization!

      Oh, and you could also try refillable capsules. I did the same. You won't have to invest a lot, can play around with the coffee you like and will get real and good espresso out of it. So you can still use your machine. It just needs some adjustments to find the proper amount of coffee and grind size the machine can handle.
