This is clearly one of the most amazing and exciting harness races in history. No American style Indian file racing, here!
Thanks for preserving the memory of Cardigan Bay, the first standardbred to win 1 million dollars and one of the most courageous horses ever. He is the Down Under harness equivalent of the immortal runner Phar Lap.

Hard to say if he was a better horse than Niatross. Niatross was quicker but the US tracks are also larger.

LOOK AT THE CROWDS AND I STILL SAY SMALLER TRACKS BROUGHT IN THE CROWDS LIKE WAYVILLE THE SHOWGROUNDS BECAUSE PEOPLE WERE MORE INVOLED IN THE. RACES AND THE COLONIAL BRED HORSES WERE FAR MUCH BETTER THAN TODAYS ! MICHAEL IN MELBOURNE

Michael Maguire - I thoroughly agree with you . The atmosphere was electric with the horses so close to the huge crowds . The chrome sulkies glistening under the lights , and so many wonderful country performers often bred, owned, trained and driven by the same person . Indeed , Michael they were the days , we were blessed to have been able to experience them .

Just imagine if harness racing horses today, were driven in the cruel way they were driven back in this era. All they basically did was drive flat out from the start, some drivers even flogging horses all the way. This was not horsemanship, it was downright cruelty, and no wonder there were so many falls due to gung ho drivers with not much between their ears. Today there are not as many falls fortunately,, but still plenty of drivers with not much up top.And many over rated ones as well. Nothing much has changed over the years in reality.

@@papaemeritusii4525 Not a whinge at all MATE. And I am not your mate. And I am also sorry the the gene pool has possibly been so unkind to you, that you can't see reality. I have been involved in the industry for decades, and just might have a bit more experience than you. Some industry participants have had years to change their attitudes towards horse welfare and whip use and prohibited substances, among other issues but took too long. As the saying goes.."people cannot change what they won't acknowledge", so the controlling bodies changed the rules for them. And now harness racing , in fact all racing is government controlled in each jurisdiction.. Funny that. Not hard to see why that came about.
