Tomoe 52gsm is supposed to ghost, but not bleed. It's only 14# paper. It's purpose is to show off fountain pen ink, which sits on the surface for a long time. It's also made thin so you can see ruling guides through it. Being very thin, it also allows for a lot more pages in a notebook while keeping the notebook thin. Tomoe River 68gsm doesn't ghost or bleed, unless you pour a ridiculous amount of ink on it. If you don't mind the ghosting, and want to be able to see ruling guides, or anything else, through the paper, then 52gsm is a great choice. If you hate ghosting, then 68gsm is perfect. For their intended purposes, I'm not sure there's a better paper on the market. But it's a myth that thicker paper is better paper. Past 90gsm, the paper is not the highest quality, and thickness is used to make the paper try to do what high quality paper can do at much lower weight. Even 90gsm isn't needed for the writing, but makes the paper easier to handle, and less likely to crease or crumple at the edges if you hold it wrong, or let it bump into something, and makes it more difficult to tear, and to bind. But where writing is concerned, Tomoe River shows you don't need really thick paper. Tomoe River 68gsm is impervious to pretty much anything. The wettest, widest nibs I have, along with the wettest and most penetrating inks I have, won't even ghost on Tomoe River 68gsm. But it does, crease, crumple, and tear a little easier than eighty or ninety GSM, so I don't use it for anything I want to be sure reaches its destination in perfect condition, or anything I want to stay as perfect as possible for a lot of years, such as my personal journal.
You prolly dont give a shit but if you're bored like me atm then you can watch pretty much all the latest movies and series on Instaflixxer. I've been binge watching with my brother for the last days :)
Before purchasing any item from Galen Leather please make sure you are aware of the shipping costs. Despite my invoice including the cost of shipping, the delivery company UPS requested a further £30 English pounds before I was allowed my parcel. Make sure you make enquiries before purchasing! I was advised by Yusuf that this is mentioned on their website. Clearly I had missed that section. I advise you to be careful. The product I purchased is lovely. It is a shame that it has been ruined for me paying a lot more money than expected. I will make it my mission to ensure that everyone is aware on all social platforms. I know I can’t be the first to suffer from this!
It sucks you got hit with such high import taxes. I live in the US so luckily I don’t have to worry about it. I’ll try to remember to mention it in future videos!
I just bought these notebooks and I’m in love. They are so durable and beautiful. I can’t wait for them to look even more worn and well loved over time =)
There is nothing like opening a package from Galen Leather. Everything is done with care and thought. It’s like a birthday or Christmas gift. The little gift bag of goodies inside is a nice surprise as well. Cheers
Hi. I have just discovered your reviews and channel in the last couple of weeks I have watched several of them and enjoy your presentation and carefully thought out reviews. Question: Do you or would you prefer the Galen Leather journal over the The Author by GLP Creations journal?
Hi Gary! I’m glad you enjoy my videos! I just started using the Galen Leather journal. They are both nice journals but I think I prefer the Galen one. The real leather feels more premium and the green color is gorgeous. GLP has some binding issues, it came undone a bit towards the end. So far no issues with Galen. The only thing is the Galen journals have blank pages. I use the line guides that come with it and don’t mind that. But if you want a dotted or lined journal you might have to go with the GLP one. Another option would be the Seven Seas Writer by Nanami paper. I’ve also done a couple reviews on that brand. Good quality as well but the cover is cardboard and prob my least favorite cover of all three. Feel free to also check out my Instagram @thejournaljoy 😊
@@journaljoy Hey I did follow on Instagram. And I tried finding Writer Journal at Nanami ( out of stock) . Same with LeStallion A5 and one other. I did get the Nanami Cafe Journal just to try out Tomoe Paper and I like except a little small for me. That said I really enjoy the paper. Decided to use a Platinum Preppy Fine with blue ink to start. Used for couple entries so far. I just new at this jounalling so need work on it yet. Have a safe rest of your weekend.
@@garybruner36 Hi Gary! Great you got a Tomoe journal! Yes I used the Cafe Note as well and found it a bit too narrow. The Galen leather B6 is a true B6 which means it is wider so that suits my needs better. Enjoy your journaling journey!! 😊
@@journaljoy Thanks for replying! But what does it mean when you say the leather feels the same but the green leather definitely has a smooth feel to it? My crazy horse brown feels like the suede feeling finish as advertised but my green one feels nothing like that, and Galen Leather keeps insisting that the plastic feel I'm getting is just the smoother finish. I would've never gotten it if I knew I wouldn't be getting what was advertised :(
@@journaljoy Yup, I agree on the variations but it's only acceptable if it extends to colour variations or blemishes like scratches and uneven patina. I think if the entire cover feels no different from a notebook with a shiny plastic cover, something went very wrong. After this disappointing first experience, I would no longer have confidence to shop at Galen leather anymore and cannot promote them to people 😔
I have got the paper cover A5, which is cheaper. The cover is similar to Nanami's, maybe a bit less stiff, it comes in a zippered bag and has the same extras.
@@smigglesmiggles614 Watch my latest video on UA-cam. The production of Tomoe River paper is being discontinued. They might outsource it but so far nothing is set in stone in terms of there being a TR producer.
My outlier view is that the leather covering my A6 feels kind of papery to me and, while I appreciate a distressed appearance, this Crazy Horse finish looks to me more like old cracked vinyl than leather. The TR paper is good, though, as are the small, tight signatures in which it's bound.
I’m wondering if this has changed over time. I found Galen about 1 1/2 to two years ago and the leather feels really nice to me now. I’ve not had any paper my or dry feeling covers so far. It’s much more pliant to the touch. Idk if it’s a patch issues or not. Cheers
I recommend you moisturise it with a leather balm. Galen leather sells one but there are LOADS of alternatives. You don’t have to do it often at all, but you have to do it to get the best out of your leather. It will darken the leather for a bit but it does go back to its original colour.
This paper doesn't bleed through, but its ghosting is such high that makes every opposite page of each sheet actually unusable, so 400 pages turn to be 200 in real use. This paper may give average performance (in terms of ghosting) with pencils, but terrible with any type of ink. Therefore I'd only use it with pencils. Another great unintentional ASMR review. Thanks for sharing! 👍🏻
I would say page usage is dependent on what annoys you. I've been using 52 GSM Tomoe River Paper for 3 years and I always use both sides of the page, but the only thing that truly bothers me is bleed though and I don't get that with TRP.
@@gcalvaro It's a complete myth that thicker paper is better paper. Making bad paper thicker just means it's thick bad paper. Good paper never has to be more than 90gsm. That journal is gorgeous. I love the packaging too, very unique. I wish there was a lined version!

Such a delicious notebook... Makes me want to buy some leather and bind my own notebook!
It’s awesome that they made notebooks, I love tomoe River paper since I only write with fountain pens.
Thanks for the video showcase! Question: is the inside of the covers furry like leather or is it covered with a piece of paper (endpages)?
It's covered with black paper.

Exactly! :)
How does the crazy horse green feel? Does it feel suede like or plastic like?
Does the leather on the green and brown journal feel the same?

Their website states it’s the old TPR. Might want to double check that under the descriptions. 🙂
