What a wonderful story from Somerset Maugham. But, he hero goeth too far. Now his own children will be beggars and what will he be able to give to them?
Rabbi Hillel, who lived around the same time as Jesus, was interrogated by the Romans. Sarcastically, they asked him to tell what the Torah and their writings meant standing on one foot. He said, “if I am not for me, who will be for me? AND when I am for myself alone, what am I? and if not now, then when?” In other words as explained in the Pirkay Avote - Sayings of the Fathers - I should take care of myself and my family, but you should care about others, also. And if you are not doing this, then when will you do this?
We give, in a Tzadukah box, to others in the synagogue, so no one knows who you are - anonymously. Therefore the poor owe nothing to you and can still be proud. Those who give and expect thanks are not giving in the correct way, although at least giving.
This man was doing much good in the world, but didn’t expect thanks, - that’s wonderful. He wanted to know the people he was aiding. He cared very much. 🤕🌷🌱
