Ugh, yeah that quote has peaved me for quite some time! As someone who prides himself on being a level designer, seeing this level be made by someone who cannot admit he himself is a masterful level designer makes me want to give him both a smack on the head and a big hug! Tristian, you are a level designer. And you've made my absolute favorite Doom level in all of the fandom.
"Not a level designer" The man who designed a caco award worthy level with awesome combat and great atmosphere. 100% awesome level design, probably the best in the whole WAD and when that WAD is EVITERNITY 2, you know you're facing some of the best Doom mapping ever made. Kudos to you for both OST and mapping skills. Thank you for being a part of this project, you and the whole team are bright stars in this community.
absolutely fantastic map, absolutely fantastic midi. had a huge grin plastered on my face the whole time. i'm kicking myself for not checking out eviternity 2 sooner!
Legitimately one of the stand-out maps in this game, with a killer track to boot. And you know, for how many monsters this has, it's nice to feel like the hammer instead of the nail, for once.
Playing this ambiently from my speakers while working, and me big ol' dad comes trundlin' by. "Is that Tangerine Dream? Are you listening to Tangerine Dream?!" From what I understand congratulations are in order; this is a compliment of some significant magnitude.
Sorry, Tristan, you can no longer use the excuse "I'm not a level designer" after this WAD (and this map especially) was released :) . Awesome music too, waiting for it to add to my (longer and longer) playlist of Eviternity 2 soundtrack.
Got to this level and immediately started headbobbing and making those "this song kicks ass" stank faces. TONS of chills throughout too, this map and song is fucking crazy, phenomenal work
This map was the one that cemented Eviternity II as my new favorite mapset to return to. I got goosebumps loading into this level and looking around, it felt like a proper adventure from start to finish, and the music track only amplified my love for it. So much to see and explore, great setpiece moments and fun battles, this level is a gem I will return to many more times.
What I love about this map is that the amateurish construction traits are still there in the open. It's all made up for with passion of ideas and this music comes in to solidify the rest. Absolute experience.
@Tristan Clark your MIDIs for E2 are incredible, you should be really proud of your work. I’d love to have some non-MIDI versions released one day like you did with The Forgotten God.
Fantastic combination of a midi and map. It radiates strong 1970's action hero, and being provided a rocket and 50 rockets was a strong mission statement; the kill count is huge, but you are the hero and you will find ample time to cry when you are done killing. Fantastic map, fantastic midi and just generally is a great experience to behold, particularly in the rare moments of silence. I disagree with the level designer though. As I've mentioned, you clearly had a vision of a fast combat experience. Sure, most of the encounters aren't challenging, but it's actually really refreshing to have legions of soldiers and demons to feel powerful against, punctuated by some really strong and unusual encounters. Such as the lift ride with the Baron and intentionally keeping the super shotgun out so that your only real choice is to beat him in a fist fight, being shelled constantly by the cyberdemon and that immense pinkie wall, that last room mayhem is unlike anything I've seen in this megawad. Personally I like that you went out on a limb to create an adventure map that was very different to a lot of experiences in Doom, a combination of music and combat that made one of the largest monster number's in Doom an absolute joyride that doesn't sag.
Look man I'm not gonna pretend I'm some Doom map guru but I had a blast playing this, and loved the last fight gimmick (or rather the gimmick through the whole map) so great job, both music and map-wise!
Evidently sounds like alot of work wad put into this track. A bass solo and a piano solos, half time sections, and even a dramatic C-minor sounding section all in one track. Awesome stuff. Also sad that I finished my first playthrough of this WAD. 10 year old me blowing his pocket money on Final Doom in hindsight was not a bad choice since to this day It's a game I keep coming back to, and it's thanks to an awesome DOOM community. Awesome stuff man.
THIS is my favorite midi in all doom wads. It carry so much speed adventure hope but also a feeling of nostalgy (also the autumn feeling of the map help a lot). Also your map 32 is a certified banger and I love all the secret around. Blasting all those demons with my RL in those desert canyon around some old megastructure make me reinstall TF2. You can't say you are not a level designer after this map. I don't want to spoil the big secret but it really give me the feeling of discovering a real secret place,a deep buried and forgoten place and not just a doom secret with some weapons or bonus.
Man this is such a good MIDI. It conveys the fast and frantic aspects of the map so well. It really propels you along as you play it! One of my fav MIDIs in the WAD for sure.
Just played map 32 and i just want to say what an absolute beauty this map is. In combination with this midi it is an absolute adrenaline rush. I actually got some chills as well in the hidden areas, this map is a masterpiece, one you ought to be proud of Tristan! Also nice Portal 2 reference in the map, at least i assumed it was one, but correct me if im wrong ofcourse.
My other comment went...somewhere. Whoops. I'm replaying Eviternity 2, this time with LegenDoom active--it actually works really well. Spices things up without taking a BFG to overall balance like my preferred loadout does (Roguelike Arsenal + DRLAX + Corruption Cards). I've just gotten to MAP32 again, and it's still as badass as ever. I dunno if I could really enjoy it with the aforementioned mods, which speaks volumes about how flawless your map design really is. It's inspiring, too. Might have to end that creative hiatus I've been on, although I think I gravitate more naturally to Hexen's atmosphere and gameplay style. Btw, FluidSynth really brings out the _power_ in your track, much more so than the GS Wavetable Synth.
With that secret at the end there, opening the big door, I was really invested. Kinda made me wish this was a full storyline in another wad hahaha, such a great map 😊
Great job on both the map and this track Tristan. I especially liked the electricity gimmick, namely in the final fight, as well as the secrets. If watching someone play it was this fun, I look forward to playing Eviternity II myself, and the first Eviternity... and classic Doom in general, uh... regardless! The motif at 3:24 is stuck in my head and the piano section at 5:45 kicks ass. I'm definitely following your work from now on.
SPOILERS FOR MAP32 For a map with over 2000 enemies, it somehow springs by. I feel as though that velocity (heh) can be attributed to this track. It is certifiably electric (heh again). It propels the player, gets Doomguy’s blood flowing. What really sticks out to me are the set pieces; I love the chain gun and ammo being spat out after crushing a whole load of hitscanners in the previous room. I love the fight before the elevator, where swathes of imps, hitscanners, and demons spew forth from behind a nearby rock face. Sets up the final fight phenomenally. I adore that “oh shit” moment when greeted with, what, ten Arch-Viles and three Cyberdemons? Just amazing. The best part is obviously the secrets though. The sudden shift in tone from this beautiful, soaring track to the dark foreboding of the control rooms is just stellar. It reminds me of a similar change in tone in MyHouse.wad. I adore the gigantic monitors displaying levels we’ve already been to and levels I assume we’ll visit further in the game (I’ve yet to finish Eviternity II at the time of writing). Navigating through the cave systems, the fight with the yellow astral cacodemon, the frankly massive abandoned mine; just sensational. Genuinely scary and unsettling too. Some level designers would make the player fight through hordes of demons to obtain a weapon as powerful as the perforator. But opting for an imposing, quiet, terrifying dive into a long forgotten man-made structure speaks more to me. Just fantastic work all round.
@@HmmHmm-ve7ou In the last area, one display apparently shows a icon from Eviliterity 3. Which indicate's there's a little thought to the distant future. Ahahah
been streaming this to one of my friends and we both were just in awe of the music for this level, and honestly every midi you've made for EV2 has been amazing please do more megawad work i cannot get enough of it
Such an amazing map, the music has this constant pumping energy that pushes me even when im failing to make the jump to the cyber-demon implosion secret, and the 1000-man melee at the end! The absence of the music in the "secret" rooms made the place more chilling..... great job on both the map and the song!
Best damn music in a megawad chock-full of extremely high quality songs. This music is so freaking good that I had to rip it from the wad file to listen to on my devices. Now, is it me or is there a small Castlevania Portrait of Ruin reference at around 2:22?
Thanks! You're referring to Crucifix Held Close right? I love that track but this wasn't a deliberate reference though I definitely see the similarity, I was just using what's sometimes known as the anime chord progression :)
@@TristanClarkMusic I guess it is, never knew the names of PoR's tracks. I just know that's a true blue kicker soundtrack. So not an intentional reference, but a happy little coincidence C:
Fantastic song. I'm currently playing through Eviternity II and this map and the music track was a standout amongst a great OST. The melody at 3:24 always sounds like Paramore's "Misery Business" to me.
It is Autumn and you are here taking down an army of Pinkies in an underground mining facility. I was excited to play this map since Guardsoul's name is on it.
The secret weapon is guarded by a very special enemy, but I'll leave that up to you to find out a strategy to deal with it. The electric water will instantly kill you outside of invulnerability, but you can also use it to clear out large hordes of monsters if you time it right.
Update: with the co-op mode now available, one new monster makes their debut. The former captain appears in map03. The grand duke of hell is a blue variant of the duke of hell. It's completely invisible when not attacking and it hits very hard, but it attacks slower and isn't as resilient.
Ah yes, the map which awakened my desire for rocket launcher-exclusive slaughter. And whilst I've only completed up to MAP33 as of writing, probably my favourite of the WAD thus far.
"Ultimately, I'm a composer, not a level designer."
NO 😠 You are very clearly both!

I can hear one special astral cacodemon, charging through the autumn sky, like a ridiculuous anime protagonist. This is an epic stuff.
You forgot one detail: it's using its astral electricity powers to pilot a golden war mech. Golden Caco Gundam charges forth!
