Interesting comparative. The flexy nib on the Santini is really impressive. the problem with the snapback I think is common today especially with 18k gold nib. I´m really curious on the nib "superflexy" . The best experience with flex nib is not the line variation you can get (there is a interesting article written from the Richard Binder and you should always push the nib in his "green zone" and never get the "yellow" zone, that means, never get to much line variation even if it is a "vintage" wet noodle nib or you will damage the nib.), the best experience is the softness with a rapid snapback. That said, thanks for this video!
@@PenFriends well I have and Pilot 823 FA, that have a really good snapback but not very soft, a Pilot Justus 95, not so "soft" even in soft mode, I own a steel "ultraflex" nib from Fountain Pen Revolution, that is what I think the best nib to practice handwriting with flex nib.. it´s.. decent, A soft fine from a Platinum Century, that is.. really an extra fine with softness but you can get no more than a "almost" broad line, a scribo ef flex, that has the "same problem" of the Libra.. slow snapback, but when you flex that nib.. WOW. Than I have 2 custom flex nib. One from FPNibs.com and one of the last flex nib from Richard Binder.. Well.. these are another "world". You should give a chance to a customized Nib From FPNibs.com (there are a couple of video from The Pen Habit you can check).. it´s absolutely fantastic.. The nib from Richard.. well.. perfect snapback.. VERY soft.. too much even for me.. perfect ink flow, always.. that nib .. it´s anorther.. dimension.
Damian I’ve been looking at fpnibs at their flex options. I’d love to get one, especially after seeing Matt’s video on them. Thanks for telling me about scribo, it’s unfortunate the SnapBack isn’t there. I have heard people say they are the best modern flex nibs going, but then you’re the second person to state that the snap back is to slow. I think there is a perfect balance between snap back and ink flow. By this, I mean If there’s to much ink flow, the up stroke after flexing will suffer. I did not know platinum did a soft fine outside of Nakaya! I’ll certain check them out as I’ve been considering getting a Nakaya for some time now.
@@PenFriends exactly! Sorry for my poor english but what you´ve said is correckt, there is to much ink flow when you flex the scribo nib and therefore the up stroke will suffer a little bit, but.. look, even the nib from Fpnibs has (less than the scribo) the same issue but that only means you have to write bigger letters!. If you want more softness usually you have to sacrifice a little bit of snapback. Nibs. com can customize a number of nibs expecially the Nakaya adding flexibility and it seems work very well! (there are videos out there!) and indy-pen-dance. com was a student of Richard Binder and makes the same nib (plus the keyhole) and just like mine I´m sure they have the best snapback. Then, if I can give you a piece of advice, I noticed that you flex the nib going down sideways. You shouldn´t. Move the Paper diagonally so that when you make a down stroke it´s perpendicular... I hope it is understandable.. moreover I just add my IG account on this UA-cam account. There you can see all the pens with flex nib that I have and how I use them and how they work. Hope I´ve been helpful!
@@damian5269 Thanks for picking up on my handwriting. It's an issue I have when recording video, even when I change the paper, the table I am working on is not great! If I get a pen from Nakaya, I will defiantly be using their configurator to help with my grip. I am already subscribed to your Instagram :) I love your account!
@@PenFriends Well, that doesn't do much for me; the ebonite material is a major selling point for me. Fountain pens as they used to be, "comme il faut".
I recently bought the Leonardo Momento Magico with the Elastic EF nib. It is very smooth, and has a reasonable amount of flex. However, the thinnest line mine produces is medium-to-broad.
I’m afraid that’s the same for the gold version! And partly why I’m not keen on the elastification. Platinum do a much better job with their soft fine and I’m excited to try the 912 from pilot.
I'm thinking about getting the Santini as an early Christmas gift to myself. I quite like the Leonardo too, but the price difference is just too big. Can you tell me which inks you used in this video, please, if you remember? Thanks!
That was edelstein tanzanite in the Santini:) and to be honest the 18k nib is superior to the jowo ! But that’s not Leonardo’s fault! I do hope Leonardo can make an in-house nib someday
Well done! Fantastic production and camera work. I have a Santini Italia Cherry Libra with a 18kt Stub which I had Mark Bacas @ The Nib Grinder regrind which produced more of an Italic nib. The regrind was due to an improper factory grind. Having said that, I am not complaining. I love the pen. I do not have personal experience with their flex nib even though this one is quite bouncy. It's been an education to see your video and how the flex nib behaves. Thank you for this. I also enjoyed your comparison. I do not own any flex nibs. My heavy hand would most likely spring these beauties, but I enjoy watch others who can manipulate them as they are intended. Santini makes a gorgeous pen. I purchased mine as soon as they reopened from their Covid-19 shut down. I believe this may have had an impact on the nib. In any regard, I love the pen.
I don't know if you have considered looking at Nakaya? They have a configurator that may just help, by this I mean you can configure all kinds of modifications, writing height, writing angle, writing speed, writing pressure. www.nakaya.org/en/default.aspx Add a pen to the basket and marvel at their options. I am sorry to hear about the nib from Santini, what exactly was the issue? Was it just not italic enough? And yes I do believe that their COVID situation, hampered some QA! Still, I initially had issues with their feed, but they kindly took back the pen and modified it, and now it's a flawless writer. Hopefully, my next custom purchase will be coming from them! So please stay tuned!
@@PenFriends Thanks for the Nakaya info. The specific nib issue as explained to me, was that the grind was not done at the correct angle and was not on the same plane as the surface of the nib (slightly improper angle) it made it impossible to write with. Mark sent me before and after photos which helped me see the difference. He did note that his regrind added more of an italic element to the overall flavor of the nib. In any regard, I am pleased.
@@PenFriends This was a first for me. I was both surprised and obviously disappointed. I have not contacted Santini. I only recently received the pen back from Mark. It's only been this weekend that I've had a chance to think it all through. I'll probably forward the photos (and video) onto Santini showing the work that was required to make the nib useable. I'm mostly happy to have the pen back and working properly.
Hello "Pen Friends". I have absolutely make a correction on what I wrote about the Scribo ef ExtraFlex.. The snapback is really fast! and there is a perfect balance between the snapback and inkflow! The problem was the ink!!.. There is always something to learn! and I suppose.. that maybe.. the Inkflow and snapback from Fpnibs will improve if I use another Ink.! so .. if you want to buy a Scribo flex.. than it´s really amazing! Now.. I used the Diamine smoke on the water inizially.. and I had hard start problem and an excessive inkflow when I pushed the nib.. today I used the Pelikan edelstein Tanzanite (a color that matchs perfect with the scribo feel giorno) and... WOW... another pen, another experience!.. ok.. it´s not as soft as the nib from fpnib.. that´s true but the snapback AND the inkflow are incredible!
You have nice writing but your cursive "Z" is not good at all. Your z doesn't look at all like a cursive lower case z should be written. Great video though! :-)

Hmm, shouldn't you use the same ink on both pens to compare their behaviour?
I have in the past. Both have ebonite feeds and both are extremely wet regardless of the ink I throw at um! But I get your point.
What MZG model is that please?
It’s an arco bronze based in the grande
At circa 15:59, it says Leonardo Libra :)
Doh! Thanks for that
You have nice writing but your cursive "Z" is not good at all. Your z doesn't look at all like a cursive lower case z should be written. Great video though! :-)
Thanks for the tip, Z's do need more work!
I learned cursive writing at school in Europe and this is the way a z is done here.
