Sometimes it is either wrap solder around the wire or around the splice or grow another arm. :) I do this all the time outdoors when splicing antenna wires.
I thought this would be a revolutionary new method on soldering, but what you have shown I would consider basic soldering. Since I already know how to solder I suppose I'm not your target audience.

@@Jerrythenerdful In the shop I use one of those alligator clip "third hands". Guess that wouldn't be so convenient outdoors

I've always called this "tacking" reflow soldering ...
