Another point towards this is that it would cost a fortune to run Tenet. After Sator died, Kat would inherit his billions and therefore be able to afford the operation.

*Heavy Spoilers* Since you're making videos about Tenet's theories, Can you make a video that explores the idea/Theory that Neil is the real protagonist? PLEASE, I've seen this theory in many comments and even though he died and therefore he can't be the protagonist of the future, but the theory is about Neil being low-key the protagonist of this movie..

And the argument I don't get that I keep hearing is "You shouldn't have to watch a movie multiple times to understand it all," and I'm like, that should be the goal of every movie! I can see Kat funding the orginization, but how Neil speaks about the protagonist tells me he is the head. The disrespect shown to him throughout the film is because he is moving towards who he will be, but is inexperienced. His scene at the end is a glimpse at who he will be. Priya is terrified of him because he's becoming THE protagonist and she was blindsided because he's holding the cards now.

Scientist from future recruits Future Protagonist and tells him everything.
    Future Protagonist recruits Neil
and tells him everything as well as what he needs to in the past in order to save them future.
Neil recruits Priya and tells her about the scientist and the algorithm. Maybe he did this under the alias of Max if he is to be Kat's son.
    Priya recruits Ives
and tells him about the scientist and the algorithm.
Ives recruits Wheeler and Tenet soldiers and tells them about the turnstiles and inverted entropy but not about the algorithm.
Neil tells Fay & Barbara from the CIA about Tenet and inverted items.
    Fay brings in current Protagonist.

  • @chrisb7831
    @chrisb7831 3 роки тому +7

The whole mission being a temporal pincer move is for the sake of the Protagonist since he's present for every major event. He had to experience it which is why he's mostly being led throughout. His actions are dictated by feeling as shown in the opera siege where he saves everyone in the cheap seats. Kat would have missed too many parts of the mission to effectively plan it the way it is.

But her leaving him a message was his suggestion if she ever felt watched or in danger. He knew Priya was gonna take her out and he wanted to prevent that. I felt the opposite, that finally he was ready to call the shots, and that he wouldn't let anybody choose his fate after that point.
Also I had the feeling that after that incident, he got into a romantic relationship with her and a father figure for Max (Neil). Though you might disagree due to the "would you ever take a kid hostage"-thing that Neil says.

  • @olanmills64
    @olanmills64 3 роки тому +5

I feel like this theory doesn't change much about the meaning of anything in the story. The only story thing that I think matters is that Neil has some relationship with P. In future years, P and Neil clearly spend time together. Whether the big boss of Tenet is P, Kat, Neil, or just some other random person either during the era of the movie events or some time many years into the future, I don't think it really matters. I don't see how that changes much about the impact of the story or the characters in the movie. If Kat or P is the big boss of Tenet, they don't know it yet during the movie, so it doesn't really affect anything, imo, and I don't think it affects much about how we are supposed to relate to their characters.
Also, during the beginning of this video, you mentioned that people don't show P much respect, but that would make a lot of sense if the nature of the organization is such that people don't know the identities of everyone in the organization. It would make a lot of sense if P (or Kat) was the leader and yet never made that directly known to any of the characters seen in the movie. In fact, the original interpretation most people have is that P is the leader of Tenet, yet he never makes it known to his past self until maybe Neil tells him as much towards the very end of the movie

I have a mini theory like, I know it's not a big thing but I think the painting which Sir Michael gave to the Protagonist was actually sent from the future, since it was the link for the Protagonist to connect with Kat in the first place and it played an important role, the painting was exceptionally similar to that because Kat/Protagonist sent that back.

She's just a gorgeous strong character who is developing throughout the movie (and she didn't know about Sator's operations in detail).
Even though Protagonist called himself a trigger, he took initiative and sometimes charge in every operation he came across before the finale: opera ("it's mine now"), finding Priya, saving Kat, car chase etc. To help Kat in the end is also his idea. The realisation he's in charge of Tenet logically concludes this chain.
As a movie Tenet is simple (relatively lol) and this is a part of its beauty.
Nevertheless, Kat funding the organisation makes sense.

I'm not sure I agree there is a single protagonist in TENET. It's clear that all of the main characters have their own "journey" and make decisions that affect the outcome for themselves and for others. But this video has helped me see Kat's role in the story in a new light, since my last (4th) viewing two days ago! Hopefully there will be sequels and I'm sure Kat will play a more direct role in events.
While the movie we saw follows The Protagonist and Neil most closely, we don't actually see that much of Sator, who is just as much a protagonist as the others but just not on-screen as much. In the boat on the way back, Neil tells Kat and The Protagonist that Sator was at the opera the day of the Stalsk 12 explosion. He (Sator) flew off the yacht on a helicopter only to return a short while later. This suggests that Sator's timeline is just as complex as Neil's, as he (Sator) was at being killed by Kat on the Yacht off the coast of Vietnam while also being at the Kiev Opera siege, which took place on the same day. This parallels how Neil was at both Kiev and Stalsk 12 at the same time.
I'll be the first to admit that TENET is very confusing, so I may be completely wrong in my theories here. Any help making sense of it is appreciated :-)

And it did look like he already new what was coming.

100% true and then some. The use of exaggerated color grading the first time Kat's introduced, Greek-style perfect white grading and composition on the boat and more so with the statues on the Ravello cliffs, Priya's masculine quote, her newly acquired money, even her exaggerated height above Sator and the protagonist, but most importantly the protagonist's failures point to Kat being the true leader of tenet.
The fact that the only time the protagonist cleanly pulled the trigger was on Priya (Nolan chose not to have him kill the two Ukrainian soldiers, safely unload the mag in the turnstile, and hesitate enough to cost Max his life were big key points) shows not only that she was his true mission, but I believe her true intent at the end of the film was to kill Kat to take over tenet and recollect the algorithm. Hoytema's use of the triangle and sharp edges in Priya's composition as well as the very subtle but ominous blocking by Sanjay when she first introduces herself showed me the "two antagonists" line had the classic Nolan truth to its exposition ("It's a double that comes out of the other end, I promise you.")
Max (Neil) sees the protagonist as his father figure, he helps Kat raise him, she uses her billions to build tenet, he teaches Max how to be a spy. Ordering his drink doesn't say they're just coworkers, that says that they're like family.

    A few thoughts...
Let’s assume Neil is Max for this.
TP at Opera scene is the Future Protagonist who is at the end of the mission and (indeed) kills himself. That silver pill is the “scotch tape” of the Möbius strip. He “wakes” on the boat as the 30 yr old protagonist. He goes through the timelines as far forward as Talinn. Then, after Talinn he doubles back to take care of Priya, collect Max and head back 10 years to 2010 with Max. Then, from 2010 to 2020 “Neil” goes forward until his death. TP is 50 at the Opera and knows everything will play out.
Neil speaks Estonian because he lived inverted outside Talinn for 10 years and probably got some “shore leave” in regular time.
TP has no trace of having his teeth ripped out because that happened at the end of his life.
After the “the 14th” battle, TP has access to the turnstile in Talinn (so he has unlimited access to resources) but until his death there is a danger but not really because he goes back, dies and seals the loop.

The Protagonist and Kat obviously has a relationship with each other in the future, and in turn, bonds a friendship with Max who we all know is Neil. That's why there was a bit of a knowing smile when he asked TP"..not even from afar ?", when referring to TP saying he was gonna keep away from Kat. TP, basically Is a father figure to Max/Neil and together with Kate, they start Tenet .

Priya has an air of arrogance because - unlike the Protagonist - she already knows how it ends.
Think about it: from the Protagonist's PoV he is living through an experience that starts at the Kiev Opera before going off to meet Priya, then engaging in a heist in Oslo, then travelling to Tallin, then reverting back in time to eventually participate in that heist (again) before finally ending in a bizarre backwards/forwards battle in Siberia.
Wibbley-Wobbly Timey-Wimey stuff, but from HIS PoV he experiences it all as a linear flow of time.
Not so for Priya because she never wibbley-wobbles nor timey-wimeys.
So from HER PoV both the Kiev Opera siege and the big battle in Siberia have already happened ("on the 12th" as Sir Michael Caine said in his posh voice). So when she meets the Protagonist she knows both how this starts and how it ends.
Not so the Protagonist; when he talks to Priya the Kiev Opera siege is in his past, but he is completely unaware of how this ends in "his" future.
That disparity in knowledge is enough to make anyone smug and arrogant.

    Arepo holds the strings.
He is the God like figure in the movie. Father of Neil. Symbolizing God, Spirit (no hands an legs, as Kat said; not a physical human being) while Neil is the sacrificial Jesus, God reincarnated. Kate symbolizes Mary.
The film hints that Arepo lost his limbs because of Sator. But is it so..
Tenet 2 and 3 will make this more clear I think.
Nolan is raised in a Christian context. He went to catholic school and has told that Christianity has influenced his movies.
This is all just a theory. Interesting concept, quite far fetched.

Kat went from asset being used, and wife being held hostage, to an equal to the protagonists. Empowered, in the know, helpful to the mission. The Protagonist is God-like. Neil is her son and he recruited him from childhood. At least that's what Nolan was going for until he realized that would be impossible. They showed the closeup of the boy's backpack at the end because it was supposed to have the tag and ring that Neil had when he died. "Are you sure you're not going to go back to London to see Kat?" It was a hint. He either visited often or became Kat's S/O and raised Neil.

The 'regular Kat' also remembers the event of the 'mysterious woman' diving from the boat and of Sator disappearing when she tells the story to the protagonist. She should be a widow since that event in Vietnam. How could Sator reappear instead ?

It's a bootstrap paradox: Future protagonist tells past Neil how things are gonna be developed and then he move backwards in time to the moment of the opera seige which is the first contact with past protagonist. So this future Neil helps the past protagonist in order accomplish his mission and realized he's the one pulling the strings of the entire operation so in the future he can train Neil to tell him in the past and so on and so forth...

Thus sacrificing the future of humanity so that Sator (my protagonist) doesn't kill their son along with the Climax's/Expeditions timeline; in order to allow the world to have a future beyond this Temporal Pincer Maneuver. Every human being on the planet is eternally trapped in this time loop because of Kat's maternal nature.

This doesn't necessarily indicate anything regarding this theory, but there's something very big (and very subtle) that gets revealed when she murders Sator. Throughout the movie, she's portrayed as a docile, powerless, battered wife. But when she gets on the yacht, she undoes the safety wires, sprays down the deck and lubes up her husband's back, knowing full well how to dispose of his body. It's likely that she's far more capable than she was letting on.

  • @sonsofbiscuits1

I don't think Kat is the "true protagonist", however, it would make sense that the protagonist and herself form Tenet together and she is simply another protagonist, as Priya said there is more than one.
Kat has money and an understanding of inversion after Neil/Max explains it to her while on the stretcher. The protagonist also has this understanding and has experience with the effects of inversion and how it can be used to influence events. Together they'd use her money and their combined knowledge to form Tenet and recruit Priya, Ives and his soldiers, Neil/Max, and several others.
Now, what's happened has happened, so if Max really is Neil they can't change his death.
TP- "But can we change things if we do it differently?"
    NEIL-"What's happened's happened."
Kat, now with an understanding of inversion would know that her son has to sacrifice himself to see the world is saved. For her to have that time with him away from Sator at the end of the movie she knows he'll eventually have to go back and sacrifice himself. Or, she dies at some point after forming Tenet and the protagonist is left to raise Max, educate him etc.
Max travels forward 12 years from when we first see him as a boy, learning with the protagonist along the way, getting his physics degree, continuing to build Tenet together, "we get up to some stuff" missions. He then inverts as a young man and travels back 12 years to the point where he meets a young protagonist, only now as a man and a mentor of sorts.
Neil/Max learns 5 years into the inversion that the future protagonist had ended his life and hidden his part of the algorithm. This is why he gives young protagonist a lingering and wide eyed look before introducing himself. ".......................I'm Neil." He is seeing his deceased best friend and father figure for the first time in years.
The part that made it "a beautiful friendship" is that the protagonist raised him, trained him, educated him, and cared for him, before ultimately having Neil/Max invert himself. Neil learns he'll sacrifice himself from the future protagonist but isn't told when. He realises when during the last scene of the battle, this is why he gives the protagonist his piece of the algorithm. Young protagonist even says in the film that he'd rather Neil's death be his decision. And ultimately it is, because in the future he sends him back to his death.

Kat has another desire beyond just protecting her son. She admits to it when she says she envied the woman who jumped off the yacht for her freedom. She admits that she considered giving up her son for her own freedom. Ultimately, Kat decides to take a measure of freedom even though it risks ruining the mission. She achieves the freedom she yearned for. She doesn't just do what's necessary for the mission, which is what all of the other characters would have done in her place. She takes a chance to choose freely for the sake of her own humanity and her own sanity, rather than subsume her own needs for the sake of others.
That's what Kat's character is all about. She's the real protagonist of the movie. She has an "I want". She has real character struggles and monumental character growth. She is the one who is emotionally devastated by set backs, and who has the hardest time pushing through to pick herself up and try again and again.
Tell me the hopes and dreams of any other character. Tell me the struggles that emotionally taxed any other character. Tell me the daunting obstacle that any other character ultimately overcomes to great satisfaction.

This theory also loses steam when you think about the idea that maybe the deadman switch was false all long. Also the line that there are many protagonists seems more of a node to the metaphysical not there being multiple physical individuals who are "protagonists". Another thing is that the movie is supposed to represent a closed loop. What happened in the past was a result of tampering from the future and the future is only reached when the past occurred as it did (like going back in time and killing your parents before they have you). This is shown when Kat recalls the free woman jumping from the boat, not realizing that it was her future-self she had seen. Seeing that woman caused great turmoil in their relationship and was directly tied to her eventually being that very same woman.

I'm one of the geeks that watches 'Tenet' every week. Another great 'Tenet' video! One question I can't figure out is how did Priya find out the information about the scientist creating the algorithm in the future and hiding it in the past? I agree that the scientist from the future could be Barbara. Would Barbara not be older though if she had travelled back in time across decades? I also can't figure out who the real founder of tenet is. Maybe the scientist from the future?
Next 'Tenet' video I'd love to see would be what you think the hierarchy and organizational structure of the tenet organisation actually is and the characters roles within that structure. I'm sure you could think of a more succinct title for that video than the long-winded one I've suggested!

I think Priya knows it already just as how all the members of the TENET do. She just doesn't decide to share it with the protagonist in his first and second meeting with her (which isn't actually the first and second) because TP unknowingly hints in their second last meeting that she didn't reveal anything major and just persuaded him to investigate the matter by himself which made him move forward and do some key things which are necessary for the mission. Now to make those things happen the exact way as they did, Priya took the hint and did her part in not revealing much about the history of inversion to TP in their initial meetings.
And the answer for your question regarding the actual founder of TENET, it's the protagonist. It's revealed in the movie itself at the end.
