Wow... I've had this bike for two years now, I wish I would have seen this video when I bought it. Can't tell you how many curse words the poor bike has heard from me because of my frustration starting it. Starts right up every time now haha. Thank you!
There is a trick to starting late model YZ450's that have an automatic compression release. The compression release is activated by a weighted mechanism on the face of the cam gear. When the cam gear is rotating below approximately 750 rpm, springs acting on the weight hold it at rest and the compression release is in it's activated state (releasing compression). When the rpm raises above 750, the rotational forces acting on the weight overcome the force of the springs, the weights move outward, deactivating the compression release. Kicking too hard / too fast, spins the cam gear faster than 750 rpm, deactivating the compression release before it has a chance to help the bike start, making the bike harder to start. A long, consistent kick is better. The harder you kick, the more you work against yourself.
@ortafunk i wouldnt say that, there are more benefits with the fuel injection, easier to tune, and set up for motocross, and i konw on the 2012 kawi's they have different plugs u can buy to change the mapping which is nice. more efficient as well i think. i cant believe its taken this long to get fuel injection on bikes.
That's strange. I did actually sell it and get a TTR250. I got the knack after a bit on the WR but I was using the bike to commute on and the maintenance was getting on my nerves, I was changing the oil every two weeks. I would say my uncorked TTR has about the same power as a corked up WR, I never bothered taking the restrictors out, only the throttle stop screw was changed out.
ya thanks for the info, i was just telling that person that when its cold out air molucules are closer together so that means the air has more oxygen in it
thats a good point but when theres fuel in the bowl and you go to start the bike truck etc...it will just keep dumping fuel when that happens to me i have to lay my bike over and wait till all the fuel dumps out its a pain in the ass
I just bought a 2012 yz450f. I have never rode the bike, only test start. Pulling it off the showroom floor it took over 15 kicks to start. I did everything this video said! -__- I guess this only works after the engine is broken in. 1 to 2 kicks my ass ahaha
Haha, sucks to own a 4 stroke! In the winter when it's -25 outside all I gotta do on my yz 125 is put the choke on give it 4 pumps of throttle, one kick stoke, them kick it hard and it WILL start 1st time every time. Or I can go no choke, no throttle and kick 2-3 times and it will start.
how do you not know how to start your bike after a few times riding you should be fairly confident starting your bike and if you are still having issues you probably need to be looking into a ttr or something
or if you don't feel like kicking the shit out of it and giving it full throttle on the rev limiter for about 10 seconds.. pull the choke out make sure the gas is on (and its got new gas in it)((not last years gas) put it in first gear and find a hill runn down it with the clutch in and when ur on the bike and going about 10kph let the clutch out and the bike will turn on with little to no effort.
ya no shit man. the 400 had to have a decompression release used. My '02 yz250f had one but I cammed it. Which eliminated me using the decompression release which is a bitch, It fires up first kick every time when warm, two kicks when its 60 degrees and below.
i have a 2003 yz450 and i have a bit of trouble starting it. i used to get some clicking sounds when i pulled the decompression lever but not anymore. also what position should the choke be in?? CAN SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP ME???
Im not a big fan of this fuel injection system at all. I mean its cool and all, but I just see problems happening, and us riders like reliable machines that are easy to work on, all it takes is the voltage regulator or wire to get a short in it and its gonna send weak signals not giving you the gas you need or not giving you gas at all, meaning your bike wont run, so yea I'm not a big fan of that at all.
hey i have a question, i just got a 2006 yz450f and i used to have a yz400f and the 400 was super hard to kick, this 450 is nothing compared to that 400 is that normal?
kick the shit out of it then give it full throttle and run it on the rev limiter for about 10 seconds to allow the piston ring to warm and so that gas doesn't clog the valves hope this help have fun ridding
EASY TO START???? Go to another planet with that story, Even the valve clearance in spec, new sparkplug this bike when hot is a pain in the ass make it fire.
Everything is. Buy a new corvette, a new camaro, a new mustang, whatever you want, its controlled by a computer. Why? Because the computer is smarter than you and knows what the bike needs
Wow... I've had this bike for two years now, I wish I would have seen this video when I bought it. Can't tell you how many curse words the poor bike has heard from me because of my frustration starting it. Starts right up every time now haha. Thank you!

Keep in mind they analyzed it like crazy and carburetors can be a pain too.
Why does this video seems like it should be from the 90s
It probably is
YZ250 was made in 1974
Great video! i have this bike and i love it!

i dont think ive ever seen anyone crash and get up and take a deep breath and take four minutes to find the ''sweet spot'' to kick their engine over
ya thanks for the info, i was just telling that person that when its cold out air molucules are closer together so that means the air has more oxygen in it
Two Stroke For Life
Nice bike. Any problems so far?
you need to turn throttle 3-4 times, kick 3 times with pressed decompresation leaver and kick like this guy on the movie.
you get use to it.
thats a good point but when theres fuel in the bowl and you go to start the bike truck etc...it will just keep dumping fuel when that happens to me i have to lay my bike over and wait till all the fuel dumps out its a pain in the ass
Hahahahaha wow i kinda feel dumb, been riding for a while now and never thought about the piston position ._.
The tread pattern clearly shows
no man 2011 and up are the only ones that need this instructions because they are F.I
yours has a carb.
I just bought a 2012 yz450f. I have never rode the bike, only test start. Pulling it off the showroom floor it took over 15 kicks to start. I did everything this video said! -__- I guess this only works after the engine is broken in. 1 to 2 kicks my ass ahaha
Thekidx5 mine starts in 3🤷🏻♂️
So thats why ppl pump the kick starter before starting
Haha, sucks to own a 4 stroke! In the winter when it's -25 outside all I gotta do on my yz 125 is put the choke on give it 4 pumps of throttle, one kick stoke, them kick it hard and it WILL start 1st time every time. Or I can go no choke, no throttle and kick 2-3 times and it will start.
I need to know how to cold start my 2004 wr250f, it doesn't have elctric start for some reason.
how does it go mate?
I did this, it popped and smoke came out the back, is this normal?
@TheXcaliber223 yeah it is it's there limited edition 2005 rm-x 525cc 2 stroke this bloke has his facts wrong
Good
how do you not know how to start your bike after a few times riding you should be fairly confident starting your bike and if you are still having issues you probably need to be looking into a ttr or something
Are these tips good for non fuel injected 2 stroke?
for yz250f 2005 same instructions?
or if you don't feel like kicking the shit out of it and giving it full throttle on the rev limiter for about 10 seconds.. pull the choke out make sure the gas is on (and its got new gas in it)((not last years gas) put it in first gear and find a hill runn down it with the clutch in and when ur on the bike and going about 10kph let the clutch out and the bike will turn on with little to no effort.
dblock2626 it’s called “bump starting”
Does this go for the 2006?
what the heck is that weighted shaft for in front of the crankshaft at 1:16, new water pump design? looks like a lot of un-needed weight
balance shaft....without it, the single cylinder would vibrate a lot.
HAHAHAHA!!! Very true, i struggle a little bit kicking 4 strokes but 2 strokes just go.
ya no shit man. the 400 had to have a decompression release used. My '02 yz250f had one but I cammed it. Which eliminated me using the decompression release which is a bitch, It fires up first kick every time when warm, two kicks when its 60 degrees and below.
so if its -20 it'll start in 2 kicks?
i have a 2003 yz450 and i have a bit of trouble starting it. i used to get some clicking sounds when i pulled the decompression lever but not anymore. also what position should the choke be in??
CAN SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP ME???
do you know proper way for cold start?(yz250f 2005)
So what they are saying Is carburetors are better than fuel Injection, I have Never been a fan of Yamaha
anyone know what the name of the gear hes wearing is cuz it looks pretty sweet
so it took until 2011 for a professional startup video was made for a 450? wow
what year is this?
Im not a big fan of this fuel injection system at all. how tall are you
you dont need a kik starter if you got a hill
I'm 6"0 is this a good bike for me?
Energy you’re a little late
hi, how fit the gearbox oil??
hey i have a question, i just got a 2006 yz450f and i used to have a yz400f and the 400 was super hard to kick, this 450 is nothing compared to that 400 is that normal?
ik this comment is 11 years old but it’s because the 400s didn’t have a compression release
i was talkin about my 250f that has a carb
I'm 5'8 is this a good bike for me lol
I'm the same height and this bike is a little tall but i can still touch both my feet on the ground
kick the shit out of it then give it full throttle and run it on the rev limiter for about 10 seconds to allow the piston ring to warm and so that gas doesn't clog the valves
hope this help have fun ridding
no sir, yours is not fuel injected yours has a choke and a carb.
fuck! dirt bikes are turing into computers!
how fast is the yz450f?
150kmph
a carb but they can be just as bad cus u can flood the carb
@shorterthentyler45 wtf no it isnt
ok how so
damn id rather have a non fuel injected one
trust me bud they can flood
EASY TO START???? Go to another planet with that story, Even the valve clearance in spec, new sparkplug this bike when hot is a pain in the ass make it fire.
Maybe you just skipped leg day
hahahaha
lol im just messing. felt like being a smart ass
2010-2013...
@TheDirtbikeboy4life yeah the 450 is much easyer
coz it iz a sazucki
Everything is. Buy a new corvette, a new camaro, a new mustang, whatever you want, its controlled by a computer. Why? Because the computer is smarter than you and knows what the bike needs

axo dart
No!
Or just ride a KX500
watz a ""troll"" lolz?
Sounds like a giant pain in the ass
