- Here are 3 proven small acreage deer hunting and habitat setups for 10 to 40 acres or less. Just because you only have a small parcel, doesn't mean that you can't have great hunting like the deer hunters on large parcels. These three 10 acre deer habitat micro parcel setups can provide a magnet for the local buck herd, and can be matched to just about any variety of deer habitat that holds whitetails. From food plots to hinge cuts, here is how you can create the best small hunting parcel whether you hunt on a big woods, mixed ag or heavy at location.
After 3 years of hard work on 7 acres shot a 160" 11 point, have been using all of the tips from these videos. The most fun I've been having hunting has been seeing the progression of the land and herd.

My brother and I have been following you Jeff since the early 2000's. You recommended Rye back then and we tried it on our 13 wooded acres near Battle Creek. It works! The deer are drawn to it like a magnet. I like to add some Dwarf Essex Rape with it and at times, the deer will selectively eat the Rape out of the plots. Rye is so easy to grow on almost any ground and is inexpensive for the landowner. Enjoy seeing your videos on small parcels Jeff!

I've always loved the attention you give to small parcels. We live and hunt on 10 acres butted up to a few acres of Corp property, and your advice has drastically improved our herd and harvests. In my area, not a lot of bucks getucg over 100 inches and I've gotten two 120 classes and the 12 pointer this year I believe will hit 130+, so thank you for all of your advice!
I have 15 acres, 3 of that is my parents yard lol, 5 is ag field planted to food plot. November 15th I had 6 mature bucks on my land. We are surrounded by heavy pressure in northwest Ohio and your strategies just work, period. You dont need much land if you give them food cover and dont pressure your plots. Thanks for making me a better hunter. The only problem with your strategies I have is that I tagged out really early and miss sitting in the tree stand lol

Whitetail Habitat Solutions Any Idea where I can find a small plot lease in Illinois? I can probably afford 100 acres or less.
Im north west Arkansas in the ozark mountains. I layered my rye on a 1 acre food plot. Hardwoods cover my 40 acres. I had extra rye and I broadcasted it in the hardwoods before the leaves fell. I have rye growing in the hardwoods as well. The 1 acre food plot is feeding many deer and the deer are feeding in the hardwoods on rye as well. Rye grain is the single best hunting food plot I've ever witnessed. Thank You Jeff.
Another great video. We moved from NE Wisconsin down to Southern Illinois, which is actually farther south than the North tip of Kentucky. Here we are December 28th, 2021 and they are still pounding my clover plots. Of course I do the same as you I plant wintergreen's like winter rye, wheat and oats alongside my clovers and at least down here in this Mid-South climate that gets us through the entire hunting season. Thank You! I have taken your course - SUPER! I have bought and read the books. All Great! But when you have a small parcel and adjacent property owners who are inclined to trespass I needed a strategy to give me a focused movement pattern with cover surrounding it. this video has really clarified the critical design concepts. Jeff, "long time listener/first-time caller," just wanted to publicly exclaim my appreciation for the valuable information you provide. I applied your "precision hunt" methodology this past season and only hunted when "conditions were right" coupled with your food plot strategies and was able to harvest an early archery doe (10-mins on stand during one of your optimal times to harvest does) then Doubled on 16 Nov with a doe and biggest-bodied buck to-date! 2 hunts, 3 harvests--freezer full, mission complete! Wife, lil' kids & new baby were very happy that Daddy wasn't a slave to Nov (as is typically the case). I'll be employing your 2nd setup discussed in this video as my 10-acre SW MI parcel sets up just like you described. I'm up'ing the stakes this year--be tagged-out 'before' the lead flies! #StayStrong
Ill echo what many have said, thats for tailoring info about land management and hunting practices to those of us that own/lease "micro" properties. We have less margin for error and your guidance has proved invaluable to producing quality habitat and minimizing mistakes

I followed the tips on this video the best I could last year added a little cover but mostly focused on Fall/Winter food. This year I got my first buck, 10 point over 200#
I rewatch this video several times to give myself ideas on what to do next.
This video is useful for me because on a map my 140 is all connected but I have an easement rd that separates 9 acres. A wierd 7 acre rectangle that is surrounded 3 sides by nieghbors and a major creek that separates 15 acres. My core farm is 109 with 40 tillable. So that leaves me with 59 acres of core cover. I'm trying to provide as much inner food to draw deer in to core area and out of my edges. Thanks.
Started hunting a small property of 38 acres in 2010. Small parcel I hunted many yrs ago with some friends when I was a kid. They invited me back and I’ve e seen and killed more mature whitetail bucks there than the 200 acre private land I have access to. If done correctly the small parcels are very productive as you demonstrate in this video
I got 140 acres. 40 tillable. We use farm income to offset some cost of farm ie. Taxes. We keep 2 seperate acres standing. When can I start seeding winter rye/wheat into beans so after harvest I now have established several more acres of food that otherwise would be gone. I will also seed into beans I leave standing for double crop of food for deer. Thanks love your show

Great video Jeff, this is really right up my ally, we have 12.5 acres and are adding 3.5 to it this summer. Not a huge parcel but these videos help so much. I have 3 small plots that held deer for a majority of the season but I noticed this year that once the leaves fall you can see thru the whole property. So they leave to find cover. This years focus is creating as many thick edges as possible using tall shrubs and switchgrass. And cover cover cover. Thanks for the great video sir!
Great info again!!! I hunt a 40 acre parcel with only access to 10 or 15 because of the thickness of cover so I hunt it as a 10 acre parcel. It is surrounded by 40 acres with no hunting allowed so this makes much sense about how and where to plant. By the way watch all your videos and can't wait fir the next and so far this one just made a lightbulb go off.
11 acres with 3 cleared by house. Vacant lot next door at 13 acres that’s a mix of hardwood and creek bottom grass and brush.

I have just under 3 acres just NE of Indianapolis. Surrounded by open ag, on a creek, with cover connecting larger wooded areas. I have have high traffic with a couple 6 and 8 pointers passing through regularly. The doe movement is countless.

We have our regular hunting land that is 140 acres with 30 acres of trees total on it. We are planning to put in 500 hybrid poplars. But anyways we also have 3 acres in the river bottom. The nice thing is in that 3 acres we have bedding and a ridge the deer follow to go to the neighbor’s food plots.

Ive been hunting for some years now and i never realized how lil i actually know about mature bucks finding your channel is going to be top 5 best things to happen to me in 2019. These videos are greatly appreciated! I moved a few years ago from Iowa to Maine. I grew up hunting several Midwestern states and Maine hunting is a WHOLE different world! I have a small 13 acre parcel here in Maine that is mostly woods. The only cleared area that I have is my backyard which is about 1 1/2 acres. I have several apple trees that the deer like but I am wanting to plant a small food plot at some point as well. It is kind of a hard property to hunt also since I have to access it from the North, which is bad for the wind most days. Still trying to figure out how to utilize my property in the best way, and these videos are a huge help. Thank you!
Love the information you bring to the table. Living in fort wayne indiana, its been hard these past 3 years on public land finding those hard cover areas without getting through 30+ yards of thron bushes.
Since I've started watching these videos I've had more mature bucks come into my property.. I used to have a closed canopy forestry. I've made a 60yard by 30 food plot on the back side of my land..I've planted Apple trees and chestnuts with wild persimmons already on the land.. I don't feed corn anymore I have hinge cut trees for more winter browsing and better cover on my land.. I've got it where I want it now just maintaining the plot and keeping my trees healthy. Still seeing a lot of deer and bucks are already coming back into the plot..looking to see who survived and any new bucks

Jeff, I hunt Hillsdale county, 20 acres we purchased this year, my bedding area is mainly buck root , thick, gnarly and entangled, almost 5 acres of it, thought it would be good for bedding but now realize it is to thick and deer cannot pass through. Would you bulldoze it and remove it and let it go natural for bedding, or would you just trim it out for travel corridor and bedding. Man I wish I could show it to you. Hi Jeff, I have 20 acres all switch grass, mostly wet, 20% hardwood cover and food plots on neighbors lots. I can see the does as they travel through the land, but would like to improve the land so that it draws the big guys enough that I can see them, Fowlerville Mi area

Thanks for this video. I have 5 acres all hardwood i have been hunting the deer are always passing through i been thinking about planting a field. I just harvested a tall 7 point that was passing through
I have 120 acres and quite frankly id rather have just 5. I dont even know where to start on the 120 and we've had it over a decade. Over half of it is damn near inaccessible due to some cliffs; it's a great problem to have but a problem nonetheless. It used to be cattle pasture probably 30 years ago, you'd never be able to tell, maybe only one section of wooded area has decent 50-75yd visibility. It is otherwise 120 acres of forest with a small clearing in the middle maybe 1/4 of an acre.

I have 10 acres (330'x1300' or so) behind my house that unhinge cut around the perimeter... Its a horizontal visual barrier for the blaze orange neighboring eyes... My entire front yard (330'x330') is basically an old hayfield and my yard is full of clover... I think of it as a small sanctuary because I don't hunt my yard & I've had some big bucks die of old age back there... I would like to possibly create some more native browse & vegetation instead of an old hayfield however

I have a 5 acre lease. Crappy, thick, overgrown land. Every year I get a deer and see good bucks in camera. The deer dont have to live there. I just need one to cross it. However, management is tough if people around shoot whatever they want.

I hunt 40 acres. Out of the 40, 3 acres is woods, 5 acres is a tall grass area where I know does like to bed down, and the rest is cornfield. My neighbors have a nice sized woods at the back of my property but the rest of the area around my property is corn field. Would it be smart or dumb to put a small food plot in the tall grass and how much would it cost because I don’t have a lot of money or machinery to do it? Thanks for the awesome content!

I wish I could post a picture of the 11 acres I hunt. There is a big 6 point out there right now super elusive. I can't do much manipulation of the land because it's not mine but it's tough with only one spot to hunt on it since the deer have made two highways for themselves on it. 11 acres but only 6 or 7 huntable

My father has a small property that is mature timber in the hills of Mississippi surrounded by clear cut. I started plots in the only ground area (about 1 acre total of 15 that can be planted. The neighbors do have plots on the ridge tops and feed stations. He has TONS of bucks on camera early season but then they vanish. Pretty much what you describe is the OPPOSITE of what you want.
He has only nocturnal activity and a portion of this is he has too much activity on his parcel.
Besides reduction in movement (human scent and activity) on his side what can we do to improve the property? I discussed with him opening the canopy and providing more cover. The deer bed on the side of the hill in the cutovers next door. I don’t think very far from his property but still not on it. I see no reason why the deer would prefer his property over the neighbors that have a sea of cover and browse as well as are feeding with corn and bran and have some plots.
I have 11 acres near Norwich ny. Big woods not alot of cropland, my property is mostly hemlock. I have 1 spot i put in clover less than a quarter acre, not really any good areas to put in more due to muddy areas and very rocky area. Kind of at a loss of what to do, alot of hemlocks are quite large, and not enough there to interest any loggers and no distinctive deer patterns, they just wander through every so often.

He has a video of fencelines. And yes they are great things. I hunt a huge chunk of public land. The bigger deer seem to like those fencelines but have to cross them to get to Ag fields that are on public. There are even a few old fencelines inside the public and I seem to see more along there too.

Great videos. I am from the West Coast and am currently restoring 10 acres of Oregon White oak habitat to its native form. A lot of your advice benefits other animal species as well which is good to see. Human hands have sculpted ecosystems for thousands of years and now more than ever we need private property owners who manage their land well, not just for themselves or deer but the game birds, milkweed for monarchs, etc. Native plants support native bugs which support native birds to hunt, etc. Curious how our blacktail compare to your whitetail in terms of your hunting layouts on small parcels? Blacktail are more of a browsing / shrub deer, little grass.

My question is, on a parcel in the 10-40 acre range, how many precision hunts do you feel you can get out of a parcel like this? Assuming its setup and hunted as you normally advise. I have 8 Acres that I own but there is 330 Acres that my property butts up against and it's a tree farm nobody hunts it have several mature bucks that walk through my property and my wife has actually gotten a 136 inch 9 point off the land I work a lot so she hunts for me Lol.
Jeff, I would love to pick your brain about my parcel. I own 33 acres in SC and the pressure issues around me are enormous. I have started implementing some of your advice but cant seem to overcome a few of my issues. Would be happy to discuss what you would need to help me complete my objectives.
I've got five acres in Saginaw County, Michigan. My house sits on about an acre and the remaining 4+ is wooded. As a matter of fact every house on our rural road has the same layout... very narrow frontage and very deep lots with the last 4+ acres wooded. My immediate neighbor bordering my property on the east does not hunt in effect giving me 10 acres of habitat. Bordering on my west is a power line right of way and behind everything is about 60+ acres of farm land. My woods is very dense with brush. I'm not sure if any of is is prime browse but with the farmland adjacent to my property and everywhere else very near I don't believe adding food plots will do me much good. Putting in a water source will probably not help much either with two rivers within a mile... one to the north and another to the south... plus three ponds on nearby properties. I'm not sure there is anything I can do other than try to find optimal stand placement and cross my fingers.
Thank you Jeff. I used your cold front strategy this year and got a nice 9 point on Nov. 1st. I also got a large doe on Dec. 31st by using your different stands for day and evening hunts. I lease 24 acres in Upper South Carolina. Can you help us with a schedule for planting plots? Our first frost is a lot later than yours. You start your plantings in August. When should we start ours. Will the same plots work here? There is not very much Ag near me, just natural browse. Congrats on your families successful year.,

I feel i have a pretty good design so far. 2 lanr road along norther border, deer enter/exit through the northeast and southwest corners. Ive laid out the deer raceway/trail food plots, switchgrass areas, and hinge cut areas. Its a square dry property my question is, would a water hole in the northwest corner and southeast corner be to much? Any guidance on a small food plot for a two acre suburban property? Still rye? Have a neighbor with a pond next to us (water), lots of woods and bedding areas between houses. Adulating CT land, i.e. rock walls and rock faces, a National park on one side, and local wildlife nature center on the other side of us. Deer are used to people, lawn mowers, cars and dogs... My property tends to be a pass through, but want to add a small food plot, plus natural browse, that will draw them for longer stints.
