- 🇻🇳 There's nothing better on a rainy day than some nice, hot snacks to make you feel all warm on the inside. Here in Hai Phong, there's a lot of special snacks that even I, despite having lived here for nearly four years, have never heard of! One in particular that caught my attention during my Google research was a dish called "Cháo khoái".
"Cháo" is Vietnamese rice porridge, which typically is thick, white, and has toppings such as pork, egg, or in some cases fruit for those with a sweeter craving. But this particular porridge is really different. First of all, it's green, which comes from the fact that it is made from ground up "rau ngót" (Google says it's called "star gooseberry" in English). Second, it's an afternoon snack. When I think of porridge, I think of early morning or late evening, but the majority of sellers in Hai Phong start selling this dish around 3pm, and on busy days like today, can be sold out within a matter of 2-3 hours. So if you wanna try it, you need to get here early.
This particular lady, "auntie Yên", has been selling here for 21 years, and still uses a traditional "gánh" (the stick-like things you see with all her stuff) to sell. She scoops the piping-hot green porridge into a hefty bowl and tops it off with crispy fried shallots and shaved mung bean, which give the smooth porridge dish a nice texture. All this for 15k VND, or roughly $0.64 USD. It's hard to believe it's so cheap.
It seems simple but it's a fairly labor-intensive dish. The lady here said it takes all morning to prepare, as she has to first make a pork-bone broth which she mixes in with the ground-up star gooseberry before combining it with the rice and simmering it. This gives it a really nice leafy and pork flavor.

I’m Vietnamese grew up in HCM and I have never heard of this cháo khoái before. Chris is amazing at hunting down the most unique dishes, learn something new from you and Max every time.

"Chris nói tiếng Việt giỏi thế" không? Có khi họ cũng sẽ khen là "nói tiếng Việt rõ thế", hoặc "nói tiếng Việt sõi thế".
Nếu Chris chỉ mới nghe qua thì có khi nghe từ "sõi" thành từ "giỏi".
Cả ba đều mang ý khen là "your Vietnamese is very good", nhưng mặt nghĩa thì có hơi khác.
"Your Vietnamese is so good", "Your Vietnamese is so clear", "Your Vietnamese is so fluent like a native".
Đây chỉ là điều thú vị nho nhỏ trong ngôn từ tiếng Việt, nếu Chris phát hiện ra được thì vốn từ vựng của Chris sẽ ngày một nâng cao. Chúc Chris luôn may mắn trong các chuyến đi.
P/S: Mấy cô chú nói chuyện vui thật. Khi cô ấy nói chú kia là "người tình", thông thường khi mà người có tuổi nói như vậy thì thường là joke (họ chỉ đùa thôi). Công nhận Chris vô cùng khéo léo trong giao tiếp ứng xử.

I never ever see any Tây (foreigners) can speak Northen accent correct like you. It’s amazing. I got 3.5 yrs in US and I will be back Hai Phong (my first trip back home) after Christmas. Hopefully we can be friend and if you stay in Hai Phong at that time, can we invite you to taste more Hai Phong favorite food? I just have 2 weeks there and I want to eat everything I can. Giờ ra đường gặp mấy người ngoại quốc cứ tưởng họ không hiểu tiếng việt là lầm chết,em trai này nói tiếng việt giỏi thật.
Đồ ăn Hải Phòng còn nhiều món ẩn lắm :)). Ví dụ như vào mùa rươi thì ở HP có thêm con ruốc sông. Đây là 1 con đặc biệt mà chỉ có ở khu vực Đông Triều (bao gồm Hải Phòng và thị xã Quảng Yên (Quảng Ninh)) mới có. Nó không phải là con ruốc (bạch tuộc con) của Quảng Ninh hay con con tôm nhỏ để làm mắm ruốc đâu. Nếu Chris có dịp thì nên ăn thử. Lưu ý con này ở hàng không bán sẵn đâu, chỉ bán ở chợ dạng sống để mua về gia đình làm :))

You know, I was born in Hai Phong, but I left the north of VN very young. Me and my mom reached the freedom south VN and made our new beginning in Saigon.
VN I knew nothing about my hometown, HPhong. But when I watch your video about HP that touched me deep in my soul. I hope I can make my last visit in VN, and I have to be back to Hai Phong at any price!

My husband is from Hai Phong and he has never eat this dish 😂 he didn't understand why it became famous on the internet recently. Love this series of Chris anyway. You should try cua bể (crab), the best crab in Vietnam I guess, way better than cua Cà Mau (in my opinion). Any dishes in Hai Phong are delicious so no need to follow "internet guide/review" 😂 Hai Phong people really have good tastes

Thanks for sharing this interesting food! I've never tried this porridge either but I guess you have to be in Haiphong to know! There are a lot of regional and even down to provincial street foods that most never know about unless they have the chance to travel through the country.

Foods in Hai Phong is so so cheap, your dollar can goes a long wayyyyyyyyyyyyy. I was in HP the pass November for 5 days but still couldn't eat all their snacks. You must try DỪA DẦM in HP Chris, its so good you'll not be disappointed.

It hurts so bad when you said you're going to eat Bánh Đúc. I have not eaten it ever since I came to California, USA for the last 25 years. Back there, my mom made this special dish only once each year to celebrate the mid Fall of the year.

Love this type of content! Star gooseberry is 'Phyllanthus acidus', those weird grape-looking things that hang straight from tree branches, super sour... I don't like them, and have tried to feed them to monkeys, too. They didn't seem that keen, TBH. Are you sure that is the correct translation?

I notice that Chris did not seem to pick up on her holding to the superstition that many Vietnamese merchants hold about the first customer of the day. No mention of her start time but she said if she has a bad first customer she may have to work to 5-6 PM to sell out instead of only two hours.

Món ăn tuổi thơ của tôi. Hồi tôi còn bé có bà cụ thường gánh vào ngõ nhà tôi bán, bà nội tôi hay mua cho tôi ăn. Cháo sánh mịn, vị cháo ngậy ngậy lại thơm mùi rau ngót, thêm vị bùi bùi của đỗ xanh, thơm thơm của hành phi, ngon cực kỳ. Món cháo ngon mà độc đáo không giống bất kỳ món ăn nào cả, mùi vị cực kỳ nhẹ nhàng thanh tao mà ngon lắm.

Hey Chris, try out banh cuon from 414 To hieu. Their one is pretty good, probably one of the best in Hai Phong. Homemade pork sausage. Highly recommended.

Be honest! That’s culture in vietnam. Some where they will try to keep everything clean but the price higher than some where on the street. But much the people made food and sell on the street better than restaurants. If you have any friend in there. Ask them about it.
