I like Mattei both as a singer and as a person. Very knowledgeable and eloquent...

After Pavarotti died it took a long time to find my way back to opera, lieder, etc...backdoored through Jaroussky's exquisite Stabat Mater...and suddenly there was an ad for the Metropolitan Opera...with ... the extraordinary, outstanding, Peter Mattei! What a lovely personality...sweet man, such eloquent performances. Robert Sweeney seemed to focus mainly on Michelle and skip past Peter...

I love Peter Mattei. I'd listen to him sing the phonebook.

OMG, the condom!! I haven’t stopped laughing! I saw this fantastic production when it was new with Rysanek and Bumbry, and also the latest with Botha, De Young, Westbroek. And of course Peter Mattei, who I think has the most beautiful baritone I’ve ever heard. It’s like gold or honey is coming from his throat.

Too bad this isn't the whole discussion, as per Anne's request. BUT... I am thankful for this generous portion.
I adored this production, and wished I had seen it more than once.
And Grisial-mor, I'm with you Re: Peter Mattei.
Though this year in Fidelio I fell in love with Günther's work and am looking forward to his Baron Ochs, soon.

I'm still waiting somebody performs the original uncensored version of Tannhäuser where at the final Tannhäuser moves back to Venus. (Only lyrics were changed by Wagner but not music.) - Heinz

Thank you for the video, it's very much appreciated. Aren't you planning to upload the complete recording, as this cut seems to be missing some very interesting discussion?
