the tarzan soundtrack was the very first album i was ever obsessed with and it makes me so happy to see a review that's gushing endlessly about phil "wrote 'trashing the camp', the song that made me want to become a musician" collins
It's a story of immigrants, and the feeling of an outsider as an immigrant kid. Tarzan grew up not knowing where he came from, only know he's different and he wanted to fit in, he wanted to be accepted by the big guy, the guy who can't see past differences. Then the Porters and Clayton come here and he starts to discover who he is, his mom can see that, and when things become hard for Tarzan to cope, she chose to give him a fair chance by telling him how she adopted him, and is okay with letting go, which is interesting because his birth parents sacrificed a lot in order to live in this island, but then got killed by a leper. It's such a parallel to immigrant family stories because there were a lot of sacrifice being made. The birth parents were killed and there's a different parent raising the kid, it's such a parallel because though most kids didn't have their parents killed and replaced by different parents, roles and characters of parents are different from when they enter a different country to live, to actually settled to live in the country. Usually, growing up, the head of the house often finds it hard to open up to new things and the mother often ends up being the buffer between the kid and the head of the house and tries to encourage the kid to cope with having to grow up in an environment where you're different but you can earn your way into being accepted. White people will never understand. Because, growing up in a land where everyone already accepts you and people don't look at you like a foreigner because you're actually not a foreigner, is different, it's much easier. Though they may not understand, it's important to respect the contributions that immigrants make despite the sacrifices and the feeling of outsiders that immigrant kids grow up with.
I love how you said exactly what she said when she was telling her father about how she was attacked by baboons XD
