After watching this video several times, I tried it, and it caused a breakthrough in my understanding of chords. I had decided to learn scales and become familiar with playing in the keys of C, G, F, and D. So I played the pretty C scale, and then I thought, let me try G. But the chords did not fit, and the thought came, what is the chord that corresponds to A minor in the key of G? Lightening Flash!!! It's the same relationship to the tone tone semitone positions as in C. Ohhhhh that's why they have names for all the intervals. So to prove it to myself, I looked up what the names of the chords were (in my Alfred's) for what you played, A minor-F-C, and found they were vi, IV, and 1. Major breakthrough! no pun intended. I'm going to be 79 on my next birthday, and although I came from a very musical family, and played a little guitar in college, I became a doctor and just started getting serious about learning piano recently in my retirement. I don't know how long I have to live, but I don't want to get to 95 and wish I had studied and practiced more. You are a wonderful teacher! Thank you for your lessons!!

As an intermediate pianist, I thought this exercise would be so easy! But, wow, not at all. Transposing the exercise into different keys, figuring out the level 3&4 chords for that scale, coordinating the fingering in both hands (scales and arpeggios) is a challenging brain exercise for me. I am going to use this as my daily warm-up, focusing on a different key each day. I will play the scale my usual way, and then follow up with your "fun" way. While I was practicing this today, my husband walked in and said, "That's a beautiful piece." LOL

Agreed! I’ve been playing guitar for years, but recently broke my foot and it of work so I thought this would be the perfect two months to really start grinding away at the piano. The arpeggio with the left hand even at 60bpm and right hand in double was way over my skill level. This is going to be “fun”!

Just discovered your channel and wanted to thank you. This is a GREAT approach to practicing scales. Started out following your guidelines, but it is SO easy to improvise on this, and it actually spurs you to be creative. Example: started with your chord progression and then varied it slightly to C-G-Am-Fm which inevitably led to playing Pachelbel's Canon (ending with Em). And also continuously varying up the patterns, even trying broken chords/arpeggios in the right hand while playing scales in left (found that to be harder). All in all a wonderful exercise. Thanks so much, and you've got a new subscriber!

Firstly, I have to say your channel is an incredible breath of fresh air, which thankfully isn't just full of hot air. You keep the viewer engaged by keeping everything concise, lots of playing and simple to follow instructions. Most other channels this video would be 3 or 4 times the length and by the end of the video the viewer will have well and truly switched off.
Secondly, as a record producer (I have had a UK No.4 and worked on 4 UK No.1's) my piano playing is woeful at best. I used to play when I was a kid, but then stopped when I found beer and women, and then when I sat back down again at a piano my mind had forgotten everything. I was sitting at the piano urging myself to play again, but nothing, just a blank brain. I often wake up and wonder if during my sleep my mind has suddenly found the lost years of piano, in a section of my brain flooded with alcohol, but sadly it's not been the case.
Finding your channel has given me the desire to sit back down at the piano and find those lost years again.
A wonderful channel that has inspired me to get back at it.
It has also inspired my two children to start playing, so from the 3 of us, thanks :-)

I wish you would give more tools to help us transfer this to other scales, for exemple say that we should go back up to the 3rd degree of the scale for the first exercise, and use semi functional harmony for the chords. As for right now they seem picked out of the blue and most people might struggle finding their equivalent to other scales.

Love this practice sooooo much! It really makes practicing scales way more interesting😍 But I am wondering if there is some scale practice for the left hand, with right hand playing chords like this video do, because I tried to play chords with my right hand in the high note area and left hand playing scale in the lower part, but it doesn’t sound as charming as the other way around😢

    • @PlayitonPan
      @PlayitonPan 2 роки тому +4

I find that when the left hand plays scales, the sound is more dramatic. It’s like the rising tension of video game battle theme music (check out the rising F minor scale in the bass of “Those Who Fight” or “Let the Battles Begin” both by Nobuo Uematsu of Final Fantasy VII). The left hand could add tension with staccato(sharp) ostinato(repeating) tonic chords, like FCF in the RH (fast paced) while the LH dramatically creeps up an F scale.

Have you ever thought of writing an exercise book? I’m going to try this on harp but sometimes they don’t translate well. This does though. Except we don’t use the 5 finger. It is too weak for harp and can cause muscle damage. So we get to 4 and do our cross overs/unders. When you begin using accidentals then that introduces lever or pedal changes for us and they often need to be modified (especially for lever harp) because we need our left hand to change levers between notes. I’m always looking for ways to increase speed and agility.
I have a question for you though. Being a musician who had previously used only treble clef (for flute) when I switched over to harp I needed to learn bass clef. And not only that but learning to read two lines of music at the same time. Then also looking at my hand placement which I never had to do (and would be impossible to do on flute) this adds a third challenge for my eyes! I used an app to teach myself bass clef and those notes would fire faster and faster. I learned it pretty fluently in a couple of days. But I have been writing in the bass clef notes on my music in order to learn my music more smoothly. When I’m reading two lines then the hesitation on the bass line sets in, hence my reason for writing them in. I have gradually been dropping notes that are written in, like my chords, I write in only the first note. I use color coding for 1-5-8 interval patterns and 1-5-8-9-10 patterns with highlighter. It is a system that has been working for me, and I am recognizing chord patterns faster and faster at a glance. I never played chords before with flute so it is a challenging transition. What would you tell a student that does this? Is it wrong? I wish I could post a pic of what my music looks like. If you feel this is a bad habit can you tell me what you would have taught me to do if I were your piano student?

Returning after 20 year break so you can imagine the fatigue and frustration. Level 8 back then to very little menory is saddening but this will transform and revive my interest to practice the fundamentals.. thank you

That's a great trick/lesson. I've pretty much got the hang of the C scale now (with right hand) so playing it with left hand chords will be an interesting challenge. I like how the first time through it leaves it hanging by ending on the E and the second time resolving on the C. Nice.

🔥 love how the major-seven leading-tone (B), over the subdominant chord (FAC), effectively creates a rootless G⁹/F (guidetones BF) …or at least: this vi-IV-I creates tonality-tension-release… with the IV ⁽ᵃᵈᵈ#¹¹⁾ (FAC+B) tritone substituting for the V⁹ (FAGB or GBDFA) chord like a ii-V⁷-I 😎💫

Nice one! Thanks! This also a nice move towards improvisation. It could help classical musicians, who would like to improvise- but are "afraid" to do so- on their way. Randomly changing the direction of the right hand (doing the explained exercise) doesen't sound bad-and this already is a simple improvisation. Leaving gaps helps the beginner of this kind of playing to forming short Phrasen. Once comfotable with this, one could move towards playing freely over chord progressions found in pop or simple jazz tunes. Moving towards jazz will require more scales, but the church modes hidden in the plain major scale are a start. Next, one could try the the modes of the altered minor scales. Next could be all the other more exotic construced scales you find in jazz music. A really really nice channel called New Jazz Channel by Oliver Pren takes you from pentatonics to stacked pentatonics or stacked blues scales (which can also be used improvising over commonly chord progressions in pop or gospel music. This way of using pentatonic scales also cover all the church modes of the major scale).
I'm looking forward to check out the rest of your videos...
Thanks for putting this on YT!

You are a great pianist. You teach your utube videos honestly. Show your finger moments very slowly, so we can at least have an interest to start learning.
Wishing you the best of the best Sir. ✨✨✨

I posted a link to a MuseScore file for this today in a comment on this page that can be transposed to any key if needed. MuseScore is open source, 100% free software, and the file I created is likewise completely free (no charge, and no copyright)

Great idea! Makes the scale sound like a contemporary pop ballad and this goes very well with young students, who might call it quits when you throw too much theory and exercises at them (both are extremely important, but also very hard). Thanks for this!
