    Hi all - spring 21 update - our lilies are shooting well already (both in the ground, in our pots), it has been quite dry so not too much slug damage (which can be a problem with wet weather as the new shoots are emerging) but we have seen loads of the dreaded red lily beetles already (a few weeks earlier than normal) so I regrettably had to spray with an insecticide last night to give us a couple of months or protection ... love watching those stems growing so quickly!

    Thanks for sharing both ways of planting lilies. Can I use the tomato fertilizer for lilies since they both use slightly acid soil? How to keep the roots cool while give lilies lots of sunlight when they stay in pot?

    • @rogthegardener1
      @rogthegardener1  Рік тому

      Hi, thanks for your comment - all I can say is that we have used tomato feed (or similar high potash feeds) for over 10 years with good success - we have had summer temperatures if over 30 degrees C this summer with no problems - putting the lilies in really big pots helps (and maybe keeps them a little cooler thanks being in small pots?)

      Hi, thanks for your feedback!
      We tend to pot them up into larger pots after a few years… the largest pots we currently have are about 50 litres / 10 gallons! They can get quite thirsty during hot summer weather, so we put saucers underneath too, to hold a reservoir of water - hope this helps?

    Thank you so much. I am new to lilies and have just had our first finish flowering. I would be grateful for your advice on what to do next. Do I leave it to possibly produce seeds or cut them back, and if so to what height? In this first year the stalks were 1 m, 0.6m and .08m (early slug damage to 2) and the taller 2 produced 2 flowers each.

    • @rogthegardener1
      @rogthegardener1  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Tricia, thanks for your comment, glad to hear that you had some success despite the slugs!
      So we leave ours and do very little for the rest of the summer - for as long as they have green leaves so that they can store energy back into the bulbs for next year. Once they start to turn yellow / die off (usually in October here in south wales) then we cut them right back to short 2-3 inch stumps - as shown in our video below - hope it makes sense / helps?

    Hi my lily trees are sprouting up now what support will I need for them when they get bigger?

    • @rogthegardener1
      @rogthegardener1  3 роки тому +3

      Hi Harvey - thanks for your comment, so the need for support can vary from variety to variety, and also different garden situations can affect their need for support. Some of ours never seem to need support, others sometimes do - so I normally keep an eye on them as they approach their full height and flowering time and if I can se that some stems are staring to lean over I get the stakes and string out - I use think bamboo canes or a thinner metal stake ... sometimes I put 3 or 4 stakes in a close circle around the clump of stems and run the string around the clump to spread the support around all the stems - does that make sense .. maybe a I should do another video about this later in the summer as they approach flowering time (it is normally at that point - as the flower buds make the stems 'top heavy' that are more inclined to start leaning) - hoe this helps?

    • @rogthegardener1

      Maybe .. it depends on how big your balcony is - they could be lovely and you could enjoy the scent from close up, the trees lilies may get too big but varieties like 'garden party' and 'stargazer' are more compact so would be great where there is limited space - hope you get to grow some - please keep us posted!

      Hi Lynne, thanks for your comment - yes sometimes we do have to stake some of them, but not all, its a case of watching the clumps of stems as they grow and if I see some starting to 'lean over' we add a few supports, as required - hoe that helps - enjoy your garden!

    • @rogthegardener1
      @rogthegardener1  3 роки тому +1

      @@Sansam717 Ah - that makes sense,. thanks, - to be honest I do very little to the plants overwinter I just leave the leaves to die off in the autumn and then cut back the stems to just above ground level (here's a link to a video which shows how I do that ua-cam.com/video/PYlHwSn0UOc/v-deo.html ) and then I leave them to have a rest overwinter below ground, we get frosts but usually not much colder than -5 degrees Celsius and the lilies I grow are quite hardy and cope no problem with the frosts we have. I am just about top go back outside to give them a spring treatment - adding some fertilizer and maybe such more compost on top of the old soil .. maybe I should do a video about that?
