I found your channel in late 2022 as I was struggling to get organized in my doctoral work. Your channel helped me get organized and provided positive energy in helping me move forward in the doctoral program.
My 2023 included similar feelings to what you had mentioned at the beginning of this video. Every class and every assignment that I submitted, I would contemplate whether or not to continue with the program. But, I decided to stay the course. 📚
A new job last year initially brought me such joy and accomplishment, but soon turned into feelings of dread as I started to experience the growing pains of a new job in a Director role. 😬
As a full time employee, doctoral student, and mom balancing life has been difficult but, I hope that 2024 will bring more accomplishment in all of those areas. 2024 goals are to focus on completing the doctorate and finding my true passion in life. ✨

I am doing a phd in literature and been raised by my single mom with two siblings - financial stability wasn’t sth I grew up with and being a student with part time jobs almost my entire adult life made me live with almost no savings and the same insecurities. I think it’s a very common problem, especially for young professionals in academia

Thank you so much for posting a video like this, I really appreciated your honesty and vulnerability. In 2023 I also had the realization that I was lonely and spending energy on things that my heart wasn't really in anymore. It's just that everyone seems so sure of themselves all the time and they're living these amazing lives, and I felt like I had to keep up. Now I have a clearer (more authentic) vision of what I hope for for 2024, but no idea how to go about it, lol. This video has really been an eye-opener.

Edit to add: Oh! Your letter idea reminded me of a fun tradition my family and I have. Each year we get an enpty jar/box that we dub the "Highlights Of The Year" jar/box. All throughout the year we write down things as they happen on a small piece of paper, and add them to the jar/box. We write the date and then things like "fell in love!" Or "went on a vacation to X" or "tried new restaurant" or "discovered a new tv show I love". We write exciting moments both big and small, and then in the last week of the year, we get together for dinner (and each bring our jars/boxes), and we go around the table plucking things out of the jar/box and sharing them with the table. Since we write things down as they happen, we capture much more than if we had just tried to remember them at the end of the year. It's really fun and you can do it with friends, partners, or family!
So glad I found you at the beginning of 2024! I purchased your 2024 Notion Template and I'm using it to organize huge chunks of my life in the new year. I have a couple of questions, but I'll wait to hear about the Walkthru Guide for it.

Kaelyn I’ve been a long time viewer and I’ve never really commented but I just have to say your channel continues to inspire me! Not only as a history PhD student but also as a person. Kaelyn, in your previous videos, you reflected on where your voice lies within your historical analysis. You already have that voice; it shows in these videos. Writing or reflecting on your research experience in the archives can add a personal touch to your historical analysis. Scholars like Christina Sharpe and McKittrick do this with black archival work. Also, I love hearing your narrative and descriptive voice, and I think it captures the gaps within the histories you analyze =)

It's meant to be about 100K words/200 or so pages
Nice! I've dreamed of writing a book one day. I haven't come up with any ideas yet but maybe I will in the future.
Would it not be better to have less in savings and get rid of the student loan since it is accruing interest? Like have savings but prioritise getting rid of the loan.
That actually goes against the advice of much of the financial advice online and which I have received directly. I am making payments on my student loans in addition to savings but having an emergency fund is the number 1 priority
I guess you need to do what you feel is best for you. Maybe we do things differently in Australia. But just typing into Google "should I pay debt or accrue savings" most sites suggest pay debt first while simultaneously having a small emergency fund but I guess it depends on the interest you are paying on your student loan and how much interest you are getting from your savings.@@KaelynGraceApple

If you achieve all your goals of 2023, why it was so difficult?
Just because I achieved my goals doesn’t mean it wasn’t an emotionally difficult year. Those two things are not mutually exclusive
