Little Nightmares 1 is very likely a metaphor for child abuse and how children who are abused often become abusers themselves. Every adult we see in the game is twisted and monstrous, and they seem to threat the children as a resource or pests. At the end of the game, Six (the main protagonist) is stripped of all her innocence and becomes no better than the monsters that hurt her.
Now if you're wondering about the in-universe story, here's a few descriptions from Bandai themselves about the characters and places of this twisted world.
*The Maw:* The Maw arrives every year. Always at the same time, but never in the same place, it creeps and crawls and buries its claws deep beneath the glistening water. And there it sits in vast silence. Waiting.
Soon after, they start to arrive. The guests. The monstrous, sweating, hungry guests. All seams bursting, bodies bulging, eyes dead with boredom. They shuffle up the gangway and into the mouth of The Maw. And then they are no more.
For none of those that enter have ever returned to tell the tale. At least, not yet...
*Six:* Trapped in the darkest depths of The Maw, starving and alone, Six’s world is one filled with danger. Most children would have already given up, but Six is different. She’s smart, and tough, and has a lovely yellow raincoat. She belongs elsewhere...
*The Janitor:* With long forgotten things from long forgotten places, Roger fled the world and found The Maw. Now as The Janitor he is a tall tale hiding in the shadows, stalking the silence, a monster alone...
*Twin Chefs:* With a love of violence and a feeling for meat, the twins were born to be chefs. As they shuffle across the cold floor, chopping, mincing, preparing the feast, the Twin Chefs sense something that makes their skin itch. A dirty, unwelcome presence. Vermin will not be tolerated in the kitchen. They use anything from hammers to cleavers and will not hesitate to turn them on intruders.
*Guests:* The Guests are an essential part of The Maw’s life-cycle. Herded into the large hall, they slump into their bowing stools, and there they feed. Without taste, without need, without end. And then they leave, one way or another...
*The Lady:* With graceful restraint, The Lady casts the hypnotic spell that keeps the engine running. Amidst the chaos of the world outside, The Maw is the only place that makes sense, and now this rumor of an escaped child threatens everything. Nothing can be allowed to interfere. The guests must eat. The Maw must survive.
*Nomes:* Unpredictability can be found throughout The Maw, and so can the Nomes. Though experience has taught them to be skittish, some still try to make friends with strangers. These Nomes rarely survive...
The game is actually in fact a metaphor for overeating.
LN1=overeating. The guests never stop eating and basically become mindless slugs for food
LN2= TV addiction. The Viewers are addicted to their television sets. They will literally never look away and it contorts them in many different ways.
Both games are based on real-world issues.
Little Nightmares as a whole represents child abuse, while each individual game represents something else.
LN1 represents greed and consumption as said by Dave Mervik, the senior narrative designer.
LN2 represents escapism, as he also said.
Judging by the trailer, LN3 will likely be about pollution and waste.

I was rewatching the playthrough. And I realized the giants at the end of the game were not boarding a ship. They were leaving a ship onto an island. Play Little Nightmares 2 if you can.
