- Original speed - walk between Union Square to Powell St stations.
The “Central Subway” has finally opened for weekend service! This walk has gained controversy due to the length of the tunnel. This video shows the walk in real time.
The walk isn’t too bad as most of the time is spent on the long escalator.

Anyone complaining about this is super silly. This is an extremely reasonable transfer by international standards.
I thought the same. This transfer is rather moderate in length, and the people raising hell over it are just looking for something to pick at. The layout is actually very convenient: one end of the platform takes you to Union Square, the other to Market. Simple, easy to understand, and roughly equidistant whichever exit you choose.
This nothing compared to some of the transfers I had to do in London and Paris recently. Even transferring between the Red and Blue lines in Chicago seemed to take longer than this.
“By international standards,” IOW, “some transfers in some places in the world are longer.”
That is true. This is still pretty bad. Hong Kong has rebuilt entire stations to accommodate cross-platform transfers, as has London. Those rebuilds took place on much busier lines and in areas that are just as densely built.
To be fair, doing it right in SF would have cost more money than would be worth it since ridership is so low and construction costs (in America, not just SF) are unconscionably high. So all things considered, this is… fine. Still ridiculous to spend $2b on the project. SF could get at least as much value out of prioritizing the street-running portions of the Muni system (every time I watch a Muni train stop at a stop sign, I die a little - prevent the cross-streets from running through if you have to), and that would be far cheaper.
@@neckenwiler I'm super anxious to see the pilot for the new train control upgrade project. One of the main sticky points for me is that the trains can actively communicate with traffic signals to automatically turn before they are at the intersection. This hopefully means we can double our avg speed. Lucky the T/S is getting it first in 2025.
I am betting the right from Chinatown to Chase center will take only 10 mins without car interference. Right now, with decent timing on the lights, it's 14-15 mins, and closer to 22 when hitting all the reds. Imagine the travel time from Sunnydale though, probably can be cut in half or at least 30%.
I was expecting a long pedestrian tunnel. I didn't realize they're basically right next to each other. It's more like one big multilevel station than two connected ones. Makes it more clear why it's called Union Square/Market Street. The whole time I was thinking "But it's on Geary!"
Great video! The new central subway stations are super deep. The walk doesn't seem as bad as I originally thought it would be.
That's true!
Wonder why they said 7 mins+ walk when the video showed less than 4 mins
@@anthonysnyder1152 I’m not sure, but it sure didn’t take 7 mins for me to walk it at a leisurely pace
Yeah, what was all that noise about this transfer being super long? This is a normal transfer.
I’m never believing all the SF whiners anymore. This is perfectly fine! I’ve seen much much longer and worse transfers in various transit systems all over the world.
You people need to travel more!
The length of this elevator reminds me of some of the escalators on the Los Angeles subway, e.g., Vermont and Wilshire. The design was well thought-out; by the time you get to the mezzanine level, the BART entrance is basically there, and Muni is just a little further.
Not bad. It looks like a very short walk, but I don’t like the steep escalator. It is even more scary than Bart.
The main thing isn't the walking distance, but it's clear signage. Whoever complains about the long walk transfer hasn't walked through train stations in Tokyo like Shinjuku. On Google Maps, it's the number of exits. In the Shinjuku station, the signs say north and south. I avoid taking trains in Japan and walking half a mile back and forth when I have a piece of luggage, maybe ten pounds.
Seems like a reasonable transfer - except why do you have to cross the gate line twice? You think they would have made the transfer inside the fare paid zone... But otherwise.
Well because it’s technically two separate stations - Powell St and Union Square. Also Muni allows free transfers within 2 hrs anyways but yeah it’s designed weirdly
If you walked the escalators it would’ve been 3 minutes. Good vid anyways 👌🏿
Try transferring at the Korean Airport. You walk miles!
This connection is way too long to transfer from Muni to Muni underground. SFMTA SHOULD have built platforms underneath the existing BART and Muni on Market Street.
literally nothing is stopping you from hopping over the barrier to bypass the fare gates
WHO DESIGNED THIS STATION
The gates were kept open during the “soft opening” when it was free
it was free during the grand opening, chill bro
