  • INTENSIVE HYGIENIC AND SUSTAINABLE MOINA CULTURE TECHNOLOGY for ITEX 2024 (16 - 18 May 2024, Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, KL) by Fisheries Research Institute Glami Lemi, Dept. of Fisheries Malaysia (Nutrition Unit)

The high demand and limited supply of Artemia as live food for freshwater fish seed have led to soaring prices, affecting nursery operators. The maximum sustainable output of Artemia from natural sources has been reached, prompting the search for alternatives like Moina. Though Moina offers similar nutrition and is widely used, sourcing it from polluted environments poses risks of disease transmission and low yields. To address this, a cultivation strategy has been developed to produce consistent, high yield of Moina in a hygienic environment. This method is a standard guideline for intensive Moina production, supporting aquaculture activities by providing a reliable alternative to Artemia.
It is critical to provide a intensive, hygienic and continuous live feed supply to support larval rearing and fry production for sustainable fish farming operations in this country. In this innovation, we successfully developed a cultivation strategy for producing consistent and high yields of Moina sp. in a hygienic environment. This method/technique was created to serve as the standard guideline for intensive and hygienic Moina sp. production to support aquaculture activities in this country.
*This innovation has been awarded a gold medal in the competition.
