The old boiler was never lost we played inside of it in the 50s it was half buried in the ground the mine shafts at that time were all open we used to crawl into the brick tunnels nearby, we often walked into the tunnel on the other side of St Georges Hill before it was filled in by the Coalboard no health and safety then. Happy days.
Finally somewhere I’ve visited on many occasions! Attended one of the history tours and talks hosted by Biz at Houghton Mill, he’s a wealth of local information and does a wonderful job for the Swannington community and preservation of its history.
I did post a comment not long ago but it seems to have disappeared? Anyway another great video steve. I forgot to add that I used to go to swannington C of E primary school from 1989 to 1993 and while there we learnt about the coal mining history of swannington and I remember we went out on walk to various old bell pits in the village many of which where not covered over just had a little wooden fence around them to stop people falling but I can't remember exactly where they were now 😩
Another great video Steve. Links on the Swannington Heritage Trust website swannington-heritage.co.uk/coal-rail/califat-coal-mine/ and swannington-heritage.co.uk/coal-rail/local-coal-mines/ for the Raper and Fenton mine.
It's great that the site even to this day is looked after to a high standard, it's a great little corner of north west Leicestershire. P.S I didn't think anyone still watched these older videos
